The UA-cam channel Extra Credits actually used the first level of Durlag's Tower (the level just below where you are now) as a teachable model of good dungeon design, and made five whole episodes discussing it. Worth a watch once you've progressed a bit. Without getting into anything you haven't seen yet, they talk about the placement of those Battle Horrors at the start as no accident: since Baldur's Gate is open world, and therefore you can stumble across Durlag's Tower at any level, they put some especially nasty enemies right at the start. The designers were making it clear that, if you can't handle those Battle Horrors, you really aren't ready for the rest of this place.
I was so excited for this episode :)) I love durlags tower so much, it felt like finding a diamond in a chunk of coal, judging from the surrounding areas being considerable more lacking in terms of content, this huge castle with several levels and difficult encounters really gave me this sense of amazement when I first saw it.
