Not a Pompey fan, but 3 points is perfectly fine given how dreadful their matchups were to begin the year. The league said Welcome back to the Championship with a baptism by fire! After Sheffield United in their 7th game, they get 8 straight winnable matches, that’s when we will learn if Pompey is in trouble or not.
Trouble is, they don't just start from scratch after 7 games. By then there'll be doubts as well as a negative trend which they have to turn around. Even if the opponents look weaker on paper they'll be ready to pounce on a team bereft of confidence.
As a neutral myself as well, It’s certainly a valid point but I think with their aim and this league being the way it is it’s always better to have points in the board rather than games in hand or easier fixtures later on. Oxford, Derby have got off to a great start and of course they will face tougher teams later on but everyone plays each other twice so if anything it’s arguably better to play the tougher matches early on when they’re not gelled together completely and of course the fixtures do get easier for Portsmouth but the pressure to be chasing those in front could easily put them off with others possibly nicking a few points here and there as well
so pompey fan here, somewhat agree with you, shock is injured atm, should be back next match as for me williams at CB just weakens the team, we are a matter of weeks away from the 11 being norris, farrell, poole/ mac, shock/towler, williams, pack/potts/kamara, murphy (who was fantastic yesterday), lang, blair and anyone up front who's fit, personally feel your being harsh on dozzell, has he been amazing, no, but done a good job and not put a foot to far wrong imo, personally think moose is doing all he can with what he has and then hes having to deal with these massive teams every week, just really unfortunate timing but give it a month when we face teams closer to our level and alot of our players back and i think we may start to cook
Dozzel has been anonymous and one of the reasons teams are dominating us. I gather from Ipswich fans that is normal. Otherwise, I agree with your starting line up. Let's hope Farrell is up to it (CO has been getting pasted!) and let's also hope Yengi can step up. October is the real test of whether we can compete.
Dozeoff has been amazing, what games have you been watching? I agree with everything Jack has stated, he articulates his points very well with reasoned assessments on all the teams he covers. PUP, and keep it up Jack
Good discussion about Pompey mate. It has been a tough baptism of fire for us against most of the pre season/current favourites. I think our biggest problem has been going into these games with effectively a league 1 defence. I'm not criticising the guys who have been playing. They have played, I think, above last seasons level...but it's just not been good enough against our opponents so far. That, and an initially weaker midfield, has just unsettled everything. I do think it will be a different story to tell come the end of October. PUP!
What an accurate assessment of PFC start to the season, thank you. Like you, all we need is team stability, key players back in defence and upfront and things will improve. I have a lot of faith in the entire management team at Pompey, things will improve but we must all be patient. PUPPPU 💙
Im amazed at your analysis concerning pompeys start to this season. All yhe points you made were very valid , especially the mysterious absence of Shaungnesy . He provides much needed experience and leadership in the back line. Our midfield needs more power and front players need to link up better.West Brom were class, fans too.
Its a 46 game season, not a 5. A number of factors have contributed to poor points return, brutal fixtures injuries and new faces, plus highlighted my Derby & Oxfords good start. Both these teams will have tough periods during the season, thats the nature of the beast. Fourth from bottom for any of the promoted sides equals a successful season. Small building blocks
We have the worst run of fixtures out of anyone in division easily, and we have still only lost 2 games! People are acting like we have lost all 5 games! We have managed to draw 3 out of 5 with a patched up team. Biggest issue is a st, saydee is good but we have trained him all last year to be deeper and now asking him to play as last man. Need to play a natural number 9 next game. Still believe we have enough quality to stay up when we get going!
As a West Brom fan tbf Pompey gave us a Scare first half, Carlos settled us for the second they have had a tough start, they did also knacker themselves out but fully fit and maybe keep trying to play like that but maybe with a backup plan they might do well. Pompey could have easily been 3-1 up at Half Time. They need to keep with it and not drop off Second Half and make there Chances count. Albion gifted them chances, but they also gifted us so it could have been 3-1 but also 3-3 or 3-2 if Fellows and Maja burried theres or the keeper didn't save it. Either way first half I was nervous and Fair play to Pompey for that.
Pompey fan here and I see things very differently. After 12 long years away from the Championship any fan that doesn’t think our target should be 21st (one place above relegation) is delusional. Looking back to last season Plymouth stayed up with 12 draws and 13 wins. Season before Cardiff did it by also winning 13 but only needing to draw 10. If we base our results on what Plymouth achieved last season we already have 3 of the 12 draws needed to stay up. I would much rather get the harder games out the way now than play them at the end of the season when we might be scrapping for points. Our last 7 matches are against Millwall, Coventry, Derby, Norwich, Watford, Sheffield Weds and Hull. All teams that you would expect to stay up but none that are either going to be in a relegation battle (fighting for their life) or steamrolling teams to the automatic promotion spots. So we just need to work on hitting those targets and building something for the following years.
1 - am i worried = no 2 - did our opening fixtures worry me = no 3 - did i expect a decent points return from the first 7 to 8 games = no 4 - is Saydee a no 9 = no ( he should be our impact sub to hold things up when we have tired players and need to see the game out) 5 - is Ogilvy good enough for the championship = no, (he has no pace and cannot recover against these fast pacey championship wingers and forwards, he is a good L1 player at best but we have Jacob Farrell to come back from injury 6 - is Paddy lane going to make it in the championship, honestly, i dont know.....he is not looking strong enough to me for this league but can do a job as a sub 7 - have I seen anything that encourages me = yes plenty but we must learn quickly from our mistakes and take our chances better, the championship takes no prisoners and you dont often get second chances but you do get punished! So for me, a life long pompey fan turning 55 soon and has experienced all the leagues from bad to good back to bad and hopefully back to good, I only see us improving, the first fixtures were always going to be tough but we have shown we can play with the big boys and out of our first 5 games we have played two prem relegated teams and have another in 2 weeks and have played pretty much every one tipped to be contesting promotion either automatically or in the play offs by game 7 so with players returning from injury and the new signings finding their feet I would rather start slow out the blocks and come good than be sitting in a position that realistically teams wont hold on to.........provided we learn and learn quick! PUP
You do seem to be right about Pompey at the moment , we need to find our best team before we get to the mid - table teams we need to take points off . Certainly the top teams have been different class so far at Fratton park where we are expected to attack them . Can't fault the effort , but we need our best players back .
Having the hardest start to a season any promoted team has had, potentially ever, hasn't helped. I doubt many of us Pompey fans expected us to have any points after the first few games. As you say injuries haven't helped, and with all the signings, we're yet to find a settled first choice 11. Shaughnessy ill and then picked up a calf injury. So glad to have Poole and McIntyre back. Just need to get a striker firing consistently now. Had WBA under the cosh for most of the first half, just couldn't put the ball in the net. If Lang scores the chance instead of it being deflected wide after nicking it off the defender with the high press, it coild have been adiferemt game. Hopefully we'll see a back five of Norris, Farrell, Poole, Shaughnessy and Wiĺliams soon enough. Get Potts or Kamara in the middle with Pack, then Lang, Murphy, Silvera and Yengi as the front four.
Pompey, compared to Oxford, has had the most difficult start, but that was the luck or bad luck of the draw. I am sure Pompey hope to get six points of us this season or at least three when we go down there. For all three promoted side's , staying up is success. I don't care if Oxford are above or below Pompey and Derby, as long as we are still there at the end of the season.
Jack. When I see pompey’s bench Sunday I’d thought the starting XI and the bench were the wrong way around so much quality warming the bench including Matt Richie who by the way I’d match fit
I miss Bishop and Yengi so much not 100% sure why Yengis on then bench. If he’s not match fit he shouldn’t be there if he is fit he should be starting.
Was at Fratton Park on Sunday. To give Pompey their props, I like the way they press, and they definitely made Albion uncomfortable at times. Love their willingness to get the ball into the box early, particularly from out wide. One thing that I did observe is that Pompey really don't have any real end product, which could be an issue long term. I have to say, from an Albion point of view, I never really felt uneasy on Sunday, even given how aggressive Pompey were, I always felt Albion were in control, and every time we regained possession, we always looked a threat. Anyway, want to wish Pompey the best for the rest of the season. With that sort of style, and a bit more of a cutting edge in the final third, they should win more than they lose at home.
We’ve done better than I expected these first 5 games. Get Burnley and United out the way and we should pick up a couple wins. So much overreaction it’s unbelievable. We can moan if we don’t beat you lot that will be the biggest game of the season for us so far
Who Got Josh Murphy Playing was it John Moushino or was It Des Buckingham? didn't get that move at all but glad he went as Des may have built a team around him! Pompey have had a tough start but what week isn't tough in this League? I'm sure Pompey will rally but will they stick with John? As a U's Fan not getting carried away but my we look good!

Our potential first team defence excites me, just a case of when gonna see it. Great to see poole and mcintyre back though. Dozzell hasnt worked out so far, pack needs energy around him was frankly shocked mous persisted with him yesterday, we may as well kept morrell at least he makes a tackle. Still think there is also a huge problem with our shots to shots on target ratio. Even last season felt we didnt test keepers enough and like you say relied on moments Its all a bit depressing. Hopefully we will have a stable first team come our easier run (has any first 8 fixtures been as tough as ours on paper?). I just worry we will have zero momentum post sheff utd game
Conor s has a calf strain. Conor O is too slow for the championship. We’ve not got a striker either, bishop out & Yengi injury prone (was warned this from his last club).
Injuries to 4cbs, 1lb, new boys coming in not yet up to speed. No recognized cf cos bloody injuries. Added to that, we couldn't have picked a tougher first 7 matches. Every single team we have played, and the two we have up next, will make up the top 7. There are still half a dozen worse teams than Pompey.
Good report. In summary JM is too inexperienced for the Championship and he is being controlled from behind the scenes by the money men (buy cheap, sell expensive). His interviews are scripted as are his injury reports. How do we get so many injuries to players who , supposedly, were rarely injured when playing for other teams?? Are we pushing them too hard as soon as they join Pompey. Are we finding out exactly their fitness level before intense training is loaded on them? Are we fielding a team made up of lower level players and to few experienced players? IMO we are. Players who got us promoted were shown the door because they were "too old". We had a mainly good team last season in L1., but they weren't rewarded with even a chance at the higher level. Yes some needed to be moved on as they didn't feature much anyway; Yes we needed to bring in some younger players to mix with the experienced players; Yes we needed player or two to strengthen some weaknesses; No we didn't need wholesale sackings so we had space in the budget for inexperienced and unproven players. There are very few multi million dollar players being found by clubs like Pompey and on sold for huge profits. It is a policy that will see us back in the doldrums. Even with all the players we have now, players are being played out of position and player formations don't play to their strengths. Yengi is a good example - JM has no idea on how best to use him- Yengi should ask for a transfer to a club like Wrexham as they are on the rise and could use him to best effect. The next few months and the next transfer window will reveal much.
What’s happening with this team player that hasn’t missed a game for a. Long time is now in hospital players seem to be getting injured to often and in training off all things are they being trained to hard only the manager can answer that but players that come to Pompey end up injured what’s going on
Jack, don't fall into the classic 'generalised stereotyping' of Rooney and Argyle, they could easily have beaten Stoke, should have beaten Hull and were better than QPR. They will not be relegated and will only get better as the team gel together over time.
Portsmouth are in trouble. There is a severe lack of Championship quality in the team, it’s pretty obvious to see. They have been second best in all five games. Unless John Mousinho changes his tactics, he will be gone before the transfer window and Portsmouth will be cut adrift at the bottom. The Long ball game is a good option. Have to take the pressure off a defence that leaks like a sieve. ⭐️🌙😩
Injuries and an incredibly tough opening 2 months fixtures are problems. But most of all, it's John Mousinhos sheer lack of experience that's killing us. He simply doesn't have the know how to adapt to this level. 1 and a bit seasons is his entire managerial career at all levels. Every week he gets completely out thought and out fought by opposition who are light years ahead. He either needs replacing asap for his own good as much as the club, or someone experienced as an assistant like a Warnock type character. If nothing happens soon we're relegated by the January transfer window. A real shame for Mousinho as he was superb last season, but he needs taking out of the firing line before terminal damage is done to both the club and his own career. He should apply for an assistant job at another championship club where he can learn the trade for 3 or 4 seasons, before he takes on another managers role.
I’m with you Jack but not with calling him out as stupid. Everyone sees and reads the game differently. JM is a young manager but he’s bright enough and determined enough to work out how to win in this division. Calls for Warnock style managers after 5 games shows how many fans want instant success and have poor memories
@Pompeybob not calling him stupid but calling for him to be sacked after 5 games against 5 of the top 10 teams in league and only losing 2 speaks for itself haha no other manager would of done better with players he had and games he had. We knew when fixtures came out, we were gunna to be up against it
@@matthewjames7069 I'm 100% with you on Dozzey Dozzel. Ogilvie is out of his depth. But last season, Paddy was immense for us. He went off the boil in the 2nd half of the season. But he needs to adjust to the Championship and grow. Don't forget, he's only a youngster. At least we don't have Peart-Harris wearing our shirt anymore. Unless John Mousinho changes his tactics, he will be gone before the transfer window and Portsmouth will be cut adrift at the bottom.
The Long ball game is a good option. Have to take the pressure off a defence that leaks like a sieve.

And the award for the most stupid comment goes too...
We knew when fixtures came out, we were gunna to be up against it
dozzell, lane and ogilvie out
No, keep Paddy
He offers nothing
@@matthewjames7069 I'm 100% with you on Dozzey Dozzel. Ogilvie is out of his depth. But last season, Paddy was immense for us. He went off the boil in the 2nd half of the season. But he needs to adjust to the Championship and grow. Don't forget, he's only a youngster. At least we don't have Peart-Harris wearing our shirt anymore. We will be fine this season and will stabilise ourselves and build from there. I have every confidence in PFC. More than I have for a few decades!
Welcome back Jack,....
Thanks mate!
