It's a shame we never got a proper Cyberman story on Torchwood. It was the perfect show for it.

Torchwood broke me on several occasions. The frequency with which they redefined "fate worse than death", the revelation that the 456 were the most undoubtedly useless alien race ever created, the tragic deaths of regular characters, Countrycide in general, etc.
Miracle Day had its moments, though only episode 7, "Immortal Sins" really felt like Torchwood to me.
    Nice video, BTW.

Wingy you are awesome for this vid. Loved, this show. Beautifully written, character driven drama that was balanced well with comic elements and heartbreaking tragedy. RTD was a master at creating tension and making you care about the outcome of even the most minor characters. Sad their is nothing out their like this now. Please bring back the big finish reviews. If you do that then i would love you forever.

Torchwood is a show that I only got into a few years back, and am so glad I did. I love the darker, more adult take on the Whoniverse, abiet with elements of crime drama. Plus Jack is such a great character. It got better and better as it went on.

Yes I really liked watching TORCHWOOD too. I also enjoyed reading the novels. I really like the way in which John Barrowman plays Captain Jack Harkness! But as for Doctor Who... After watching the opening two-part story of series 12 of Doctor Who, I have decided to take a break from watching Jodie Whittaker's version of Doctor Who. To be frank I found watching a lot of her debut series as The Doctor exasperating, and in Spyfall I was not happy to find that I wanted the Master to win (which was a new experience for me). Which shows just how alienated I have become regarding the Doctor...

2:47 I showed that episode to my friends before S11, we had drinks and laughed. I think that got them excited for the new era but definitely not for the right reasons! That being said despite that episode, Cyberwoman and the series 1 finale, Chibnalls' best work is in Torchwood; Adrift, Fragments, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Countrycide.
I also showed one of my friends Children of Earth... We both agreed that she's deciding what we watch next time.

I was always a big fan of Doctor who, I grew up with the revived series. I never watched torchwood. Now this past month I started watching it. Going into it all I had to go off of was that it was a much more mature doctor who. And so I watch the first episode. As soon as I saw that weavel rip out that guys throat and you see all the blood spurting out. I was like " Ok this is deffinitly NOT doctor who". Just finished the final episode of children of earth a few hours ago. Absolutly amazing one of the best things I've seen on tv. Truly INCREDIBLE.

I've been watching Torchwood on iPlayer since January, and I've been really enjoying it. The first series is a bit hit and miss, but the second is absolutely brilliant IMO, and Children of Earth is a phenomenal piece of television.

You got me! I'm convinced! For years I've always shrugged at Torchwood, never really felt the need to check it out. I love Jack, but it's just something that I never felt the urge to sit down and watch considering I already had Doctor Who. After watching this I definitely feel I probably should at least give it a shot, Jack at least deserves that much, doesn't he?

regarding the Doctor not helping during the events of Children of Earth isn't it very heavily implied that he knows what happened on earth then but was too disgusted by the acts of humans to interfere. Especially because he appears in End of Time when Jacks on the spaceship and gives him contact to Alonso, implying that he knows Iantos fate and the sorrow Jack has just experienced.

I wasn't crazy about Children of Earth first time I saw it because, let's face it, it can be very disturbing. But the more times I watch it I like it more. And I didn't even make the connection of Peter Capaldi at first and his acting is AMAZING in this. Imagine if he'd been used better in Doctor Who.

Everyone always says that Children Of Earth goes far darker than Miracle Day, which is arguably true in terms of what elements are made explicit to the audience, but I always thought otherwise, given heavy implications in Miracle Day that the British and American governments (and presumably most of the rest of the world) are designating people as Category 1 using similar criteria to what was used to choose the 10% of children, and then I also remembered the 456’s line about infant mortality...

How should I go about showing the modern Doctor Who series and Torchwood to my friends? Like how should I intercut the episodes? Do I just start alternating when we get to season 2 of DW? What do I do?
Edit: Also where does Sarah Jane Adventures fit into all this?

    • @waziotter

S1 of Torchwood is set after the end of S2 of New Who and ends at the start of Utopia ( towards the end of S3 of New Who). S2 of Torchwood is set during S4 of Who. Children of Earth is set up after Tennant regenerates. Miracle Day is totally unrelated to Who. The whole thing is a bit timey wimey though with loads of flashbacks. Plus there is very little overlap between the shows (apart from Martha Jones showing up for a few episodes of S2) so it doesn’t really matter.

Don't me wrong. Torchwood is a great show. But, I'm not a big fan of the show like it's cousin Doctor Who. I see Russell T. Davies was trying to do a show that was across between X Files, Ghostbusters and Men in Black that was dark and gritty and was Doctor Who for adults. Like the Torchwood arc in Series 2 and 3 of New Who, the series could had been set in a alternate dimension. Captain Jack Harkness is the right choice for leader of Torchwood and it makes sense about why he's now in charge and why he changed it which he explained in Series 3 of Doctor Who and he is a natural leader. The cast have good chemistry. However, there are two characters: 1 is dislikeable and very dislikeable. Gwen Cooper is a very dislikeable character. It's understandable that she is keeping Torchwood a secret from Rhys and that she's struggling with her double life. But, she regularly criticizes Jack and questions and challenges his leadership. What made her very dislikeable was that she cheated on Rhys with Owen Harper and she would treat Rhys like a idiot. Apart from that, she's a good female action heroine. Now, this character was the one character I did not like in Torchwood and he was the worst thing about the show... Owen Harper. He was unattractive, selfish and arrogant and he slept with Gwen (What was Gwen thinking??!!) and he was at times a jerk. Good on Gwen for calling himself a tosser when Gwen told Rhys about their affair. The show was at it's best with it's character developments, storylines, the dynamics between Jack and the Torchwood team and takes things to extreme that are a 'no! no!' in Doctor Who. The show really developed Captain Jack Harkness and we got to know more and more about him. If you like Doctor Who and shows like The X Files. Marvel's The Punisher. Doctor Who. Marvel's Defenders etc. You may like Torchwood. But, it's a show that may not be everyone. If it go. It may take a couple of episodes until you really get into it.

I watched this whole thing when I decided to catch up on Classic and grab the new stuff. I liked the Children of Earth series but the rest was disappointing. Miracle day in particular started decent but dropped like a rock. I especially found Owen annoying but in general it felt like they tried too hard to be edgy. I vastly preferred the Sarah Jane Adventures for the spinoff shows, partly because of course it had the marvelous Elisabeth Sladen and partly because it was just more fun to watch.
