There are a few very helpful external tools used for monitoring the oxygenation of a patient. One of the most popular and most frequently used is the pulse oximeter which measures the oxygen saturation and trends in oxygen saturation. Capnography monitors the concentration or partial pressure of carbon dioxide in the expired air. It’s important that we don’t only rely on the tools, instead we should constantly re-evaluate the patient to determine if the patient is stable or needs additional care.
