  • A one-row short row technique for adding shape to knitted fabric. Great for bust shaping, raising the back yoke of a round yoked sweater, or many other various applications.
    This technique is used in my Bow River Pullover pattern, which can be found here: www.miriamfelton.com/bow-river...

    I agreed 100 percent with Liz Hecht. This is the perfect video tutorial that I have seen. I need to learn today to keep on practising this method. Thank you very much.

    Thanks for this helpful, friendly, clear video. I like short rows, pick projects that use them in different ways and have tried the other methods. They all have their advantages, but I agree that shadow wraps are the simplest, fastest and most invisible way to go.

    Bless you! You showed me how to solve the problem of hiding the mess that W&T makes when knitting in the round. And, contrary to some other opinions expressed, I think that both the video and your explanation are amply clear.

    That was a perfect explanation of a shadow wrap of which I had never heard. I avoid wraps and turns because I hate the picking up the wraps part. This seems so much easier. If I wanted to substitute this kind of wrap, what do I do when the pattern says to pick up the wraps on the next row? Is that like when you knitted or purled the two stitches together? If it is, I will always use this technique! I love that it is so much easier!

      You just treat the shadow-wrapped stitch as it if was a normal stitch, and knit/purl both strands. if you look for the fish lips kiss heel video on here, she also uses shadow wraps and shows how to work back over them.

    I'm making a pair of felted slippers. Once I knit the sole I start the top of slipper at the heel section. I want to add length to the heel only. Will this method work for this? I just want to add length, but not add the curve as it shows here in the video. I have used the w&t method without picking up the wrap, but it does leave a slight hole. Hope this makes sense. Thank you for a clear explanation.

    • @mimknits
      @mimknits  7 років тому

      The way short-rows work is that they build up a piece of fabric without full rows. You're going to get a curve no matter what, but where you PLACE the turning points of the curve will make the curve more concentrated or diffuse. With this example I'm placing my turning points on every other stitch, which is still a pretty concentrated curve. If you, for example, placed your turning points 5 sts apart, the slope would be more gradual. So you would do your widest turning points, then on the next RS row, work to 6 sts before the twinned stitch and work another turning point. Does that help?

    But what about how you do the purled wrap in the round when uou knit over it?

  • @mimknits
    @mimknits  8 років тому

    +reaseAable, There isn't a wrap really.... it's a doubled up stitch. So it nests right next to the first stitch.

  • @amarasharon
    @amarasharon 6 років тому

    Miriam, I love the clarity of your videos.
    I am wondering what is the purpose of making the Twin Stitch into a Triple Stitch?? In the past I used the Fish Lips Kiss Heel and I don't remember making Triple Stitches.
    Thank You

    • @mimknits
      @mimknits  6 років тому

      amarasharon if you're doing a traditional short row heel, it has the part where the short rows get shorter and then the part where the short rows get longer, which creates the part that looks like a seam up the side of the heel. The second half is where the triple stitches come into play. It's basically where the short rows stack with two sets of short rows coming together at the same stitch. That's when you get a triple stitch. You might check out the video I did specifically for a shadow wrap heel. It might answer that question for you more visually.

    Looks good! Now, for the dreaded Purl Soho Bandana Cowl which yu may be familiar with... they have wraps and turns.. how would we substitute the shadow wraps for those instructions? Thanks.

    • @mimknits
      @mimknits  3 роки тому

      I'm not familiar with that pattern at all, but whatever stitch it has you wrap and turn, you can just give it a shadow (pay attention to whether it's on a knit stitch or a purl stitch and work the shadow wrap accordingly, and then when the pattern instructs you to work the wrap together with the wrapped stitch (or however it asks you to resolve the short row) you'll just work the twin stitches together as one.

    • @psdumas
      @psdumas 3 роки тому

      @@mimknits Thank you Miriam! The pattern also has a knit one or purl one between the pick up and the new wrap. Would I just do that? It's a Bandana cowl that uses short rows to angle like a kerchief.

  • @maureenherrick8325
    @maureenherrick8325 9 років тому +1

    Miriam, After you have finished a shadow wrap on both sides, do you always stop 2 stitches before the first shadow stitch or do you continue until the stitch before the first shadow stitch on each row? If you stop 2 stitches before each shade stitch, why do you do that? Thank you! Maureen

    • @mimknits
      @mimknits  9 років тому +1

      Maureen Herrick It depends on how steep you want the slope of the short rows between. If you work a short row turn stacked every stitch in that section the short rows will have a steep angle (like you do with a short row heel). If you work the next short row turn two or three stitches away from the previous one, then you get a shallower angle (more like bust darts).

    How would you do this to replace the wrap and turn in the Ten Stitch Blanket Pattern by Frankie. I have an idea (Is it similar to how you did the short row heel in other video?) but I want to make sure I do it right.

    • @mimknits
      @mimknits  9 років тому

      Souls00Walker I'm not familiar with that pattern, but I looked it up and you should be able to replace the w&t with a shadow wrap. It looks like the blanket might include a double wrapped stitch, so in that case, you would need a tripled stitch like in the heel video.

    • @soul00theeundead
      @soul00theeundead 9 років тому

      Miriam Felton Yup, I thought so, I even tried it with that idea in mind and it works. If you want the pattern it is on Ravelry.com for free, I think all her patterns are free and I think it says if you like the pattern to donate money, I forgot where but link is on her page and in pattern download too. Anyway thanks for the suggestion and thank you for this new way of short rowing and the video because it just makes thinks easier to visualize....

    Does this work when knitting in the round too? The pattern asks me to knit over all of the wraps/shadow wraps but can I also just knit the ones I made on the purl side too, since there is no "wrong side" knitting in the round ?

    • @mimknits
      @mimknits  5 років тому

      Yes, it works great in the round. You will resolve the first half of the stitches and then work the rest of the round all the way to the purl side shadow wraps and then resolve them the same way.

    Do you have written instructions for this heel? Is it pretty much the same as the Fish Lips Kiss Heel?

    • @mimknits
      @mimknits  8 років тому

      +Dusty Long I use a standard short row heel, but just swapping the shadow wrap short rows for wrap & turn. I do use it in a few of my patterns, namely, Footie Socks (Which are purchasable here: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/footie-socks), and Quinn Socks (which are a free knitty hybrid knit/crochet pattern you can find here: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/quinn-socks).

    How do you know where to add short rows to increase a bust? And how many rows?

    • @mimknits
      @mimknits  3 роки тому +1

      That's a much more complicated question. I would recommend Ysolda Teague's book "Little Red in the City". She has a section in the material at the front talking about how to measure and calculate a short row section for bust shaping.

    • @mimknits
      @mimknits  8 років тому

      +reaseAable I recommend using something that hangs from the knitting rather than sitting on the needle... like maybe a coilless safety-pin style marker. I would stay clear of something ON the needle to keep the space between stitches down.
