Do Strut bars and braces actually work?

- Strut bars and braces are very beneficial, but not always for the reason you might think. They also look cool! We installed these strut bars on our 1995 copart auction BMW E36 M3 from ECS Tuning. Even a carbon fiber rear strut brace that looks awesome!

the bliss of rigidity 🤤
I put one on my convertible 89 mustangs gt..they work to stiffen the loss of overall rigidity in the chassis when the roof is missing..
I have a 93 4cyl so it’s nothing special but I was thinking of fabricating one since I know a bit of welding but have only seen some that also get secured to the firewall. Does that matter that much or should I just make an easier one that just goes from strut tower to strut tower only?
@@kniteslayerit turns it into just another contact point..it doesn't move like the strut tower/ fender flexes . I hated drilling two hole in my fire wall with the install of mine. The fox body is uni-body chassis just to save weight. all that energy is now just in 4 spots ( coil springs and gas charged struts are not one piece on my car ) instead of being directed into a frame. I noticed less flexing driving in and out of parking lots when you enter or exit them on angles Most cars are now totally coil spring and strut combo's...I think thats a foolish idea putting your coil spring and shock absorber on the same contact points.
@@joeknowz4898 okay thanks for the reply, I plan on doing an engine swap in the future because when I bought the car I was told it has around 84k on the engine they just put in it. I don’t know if that’s true or not because there’s no paperwork to prove it but it runs really good. So I don’t want to go through all the trouble of making a STB that won’t have enough clearance for whatever engine I go with later down the line.
@@kniteslayer good luck,.. and when its in place..some things will be a bit more difficult to get at. I took off any/all pollution control items, . it was hell doing anything on the passenger side of the engine with all that stuff on.if those item and the struts brace was there at the same time... OMG...its not easy to remove (I had to one time ) .. some difficulty with raising the body a bit to get at the bolt that hold it to the top of the strut tower cavity.. Mine doesn't actually use any of the 3 bolts that fasten the strut to the tower. I had do drill there too....hated drilling the holes too...
@@joeknowz4898 thanks for the heads up, I’ll try making it in a way so I don’t have to drill holes or can somewhat easily take it off for other kinds of work I eventually get around to doing
Years and years ago I got all pissed off because I was installing a front strut bar *AS A SINGLE, COMPLETE, UNIT* and couldn't figure out why it wasn't bolting up.... Live and learn!
On a McPherson front suspension it can help keep geometry, on the rear where the only job of the upper shock mount is to remain nearly in the same place, no effect there. Think about it.
Look at it!
They so work. I have an A80 Supra and eith roof off it moves and shakes alot. With just a front TRD strut bar there is a HUGE difference when roof is off.
If they are prone to cracking like that one photo you showed then ABSOLUTELY install them.
On the E36, fitting the lower GT X brace makes a noticeable difference. They are so good that BMW fitted them to all convertibles as standard.
Every car I've had came with one, I didn't think they were fancy lol. kinda surprised BMW doesn't do these standard as I had one in a 90's AUDI
I had them (front&back) on both my Octi-RS and my 330i-E46, they make a noticeable difference!
Ecs strut looks good
After I weld all the rust in my E28, I put some strut bar on it, front and rear.
Under normal road use, it is noticeably stiffer when going over bumps around a corner, otherwise there's isn't any difference.
Plus the e46 has that issue where the connection of the strut tower panel to the fender cracks and splits open.
The E30 and E36 did it too at least mine did. Also the Mini Cooper does it. I am driving hard enough to break the car but I cant feel any difference when I install these things. . . maybe because the car is already broken?
@@smoke05s It's really subtle, the e46 is overly rigid for a road car hence the cracking and subframe issues
Especially in e46s
Just look at it! 😃👍
What about the ones on the e90 that come with the car. Is that the same thing?
So in theory I won't need to put the weld on reinforcement with this
It makes a bigger, more noticeable difference if you have McPherson strut suspension
It depends on the car. On Volvo 240s, GT upper and lower braces are super obvious even in slow speed driving. All Australian market 240s had the extra upper braces because of their roads.
My 91 corolla came stock with one from the factory
Did the e39s have issues with the mushrooming strut tower? I heard somethings about it and I recently put BC coilovers all around and read that acts as a reinforcement. I would like the Dinan strut braces, but they're expensive
the ones asking are the dudes who read instructions
did you also do reinforcements?
Since this is a power based thing, does it make sense for daily uses truck to have strut bars. A lot of power and a lot of load?
I Need This for my 325i
any good brands you recommend for e46? I have the beefy, non-adjustable RE front strut bar, but it doesn't fit very well and harmed my mounts. Loved that thing though- I definitely felt it.
Stock M3 front strut bar will work fine.
@@boriss187 I appreciate it but went with the ECS one for the price and fit. I did take a look at the M3 bar but worried still about fitment- there isn't much "sliding" with the bar and mounts to get the length correct if that makes sense. Gonna slap it on soon and see how I like it.
weird thing my saab 9-3 1999 150 hp and it did have a strut bar dont know why but its there
My 335i already has strut tower supports that go back to the firewall. I think it’s factory. Some of you might know better.
How is the ecstuning quality?
I fitted one to my modern car just because most of the front of the car is plastic
ohhh would ya look at that
Think this would be worthwhile for vehicles that regularly drive on poorly maintained dirt roads? I've spent a lot of money on front end work...
*You must perform an alignment after doing this.
Can I get one for my 86 Yugo?
Great info! What about in the event of a small crash? Will theese render thr car unfixable?
No, the crash will
@@thor.halsliI was about to say the same thing it wouldn’t do anything worse then the crash did
If the car is made so that you can see the strut tower area is molded out of the frame member at the firewall, a strut brace is a waste of money.
If they were really needed the OEM would put one on.
If ur car needs one bc how u drive, then u probably need a different car.
If they didn't do anything then why does literally every performance car come with them installed from the factory?
strut bars are the new cold air intake for BRZ kids
They are on a BRZ cos they have double wishbone suspension and a rigid body therefore they dont need em. MacPherson struts as shown in the diagram, definitely benefit from them. They also help to reduce scuttle shake on convertibles even with double wishbones though. I have one on my Miata and does make it more comfortable on freeways when the road surface is rough. Its not doing anything to improve handling though. There's a reason you find them as standard on most luxury convertibles, usually tied to the bulkhead, not directly between the shock towers.
So as always with suspension... if it suspends, it depends.
Chassis can't bee stiff Enuf !
No but yes
If you're not driving normal, you're shytboxing it.
sorray mi inglish is not much gud wat is 'shytboxing it' mean?
Even Honda puts strut bars on their cars. They wouldn’t if they didn’t work.
Carbon fiber is not a good material for anything. Someone on UA-cam had a brand new snowmobile with front carbon fiber frame and one of the top supports broke I don't remember who it was
who asks if strut bars work?
People
Anything that keeps you from blowing out a strut tower is a worthwhile investment. That's thousands of dollars in body work you do NOT want to get into. A little support and you're g2g. No need to make it some elaborate thing.
If your strutbars flex more than the car its not working.
Just admit that's what happens to all BMWs
Když dostaneš ránu z boku na blatník, která deformuje nosník, tahle tyč zajistí deformaci obou nosníků 😏
And more under steer.
🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
Look up Julian Edgar and thank me later
You'll need realignment. That ain't cheap in most shops that do it right.
No. Unless your in a race car.
Daily race car is where it's at
I felt a major difference when leaving steep entrances. My doors stopped making noises and legitimately moving. Peace of mind too imo. Coupled with subframe reinforcement, these baddies gonna be stiff richards!
