I can't believe how intelligent ants are! My pet big-headed ant colony has discovered agriculture. Upon examining my ant colony's ant farm island one night, I was shocked to discover that the ants were secretly farming "ant cows", mealybugs drinking from the sap of the colony's tree and excreting a sweet bi-product called 'honeydew' which the ants loved to eat and were collecting! Watch how we make this amazing discovery!

I never knew that mealybugs were also a source of honeydew for ants. I've always herd (get it) of ants farming aphids, but never mealybugs. In fact this is the first I've heard of them. That being said literally all the info was new and fascinating to me. The millions of years of symbiosis, to the face that males and females take on such different forms.
Yes, and the mealybugs also can feed from the roots! There are ant colonies that specialize on farming root mealybugs and depend on them so much that it's their sole food source! They never come to the surface to forage and when nuptial flight comes around each virgin queen grabs a mealybug in her mouth before flying off to mate and start her own ant colony, so she could farm her own colony of mealybugs for her colony! Isn't that amazing?! Funny enough, after the filming of this episode, suddenly all the mealybugs were gone (or they moved to another part of the tree that I can't see) but I suspect they all moved to the roots since I watered the plant a bit more than usual for filming this ep.
AntsCanada that's super fascinating. Kinda like the ant colonies that farm fungi as their food source. The fact that they take a mealybug with then during nuptial flight really is quite an amazing testament to the evolution and intelligence of ants. I hope the bubblebutts are still around.
Weird that's super interesting!
ChasonT really do they actually take mealy bugs on their nuptial flight.
TheRealAfar that's what our good friend Antscanada said. Not in the video, in his comment. Some ants rely purely on the root feeding mealybugs for food. So each queen takes one with her during nuptial flight to start her own colony of mealbugs in her new colony

As someone who has professional greenhouse experience, I thought thought I'd give you a little disclaimer . Mealy bugs are notoriously good a spreading and their presence can cause a whole host of problems in your plants. We had an outbreak of them one year and the majority of the garden annuals developed dwarfed or sickly. And the next year even after a through check and sanitization by hand of all plants they still came back. All I'm saying is to watch them and maybe get a head of them so this doesn't happen to any of the other colonies.
as soon as i saw it was mealys..im like burn it with fire! Im sure he will have to find a balance cause the mealys are going to explode in growth
Yep, there goes all the plants in his ant terrariums haha. As a succulent grower these bugs are the bane of my existence, luckily my collection is pest free at the moment though.

Some of my ants started a rebelion agains my queen and let's Just say my colony falled apart becuse of the rebellion it was an epic war The rebellion vs the Colony a little group of ants was the rebelion and the more who saw them the more who joined and that killed my colony and I never got a new colony again😭 Btw The rebellion was 2 weeks
i hear you, i never dreamed i would enjoy watching ants this much. i even went looking for a queen the other day. (didn't find one)

I sure hope so
Elliott The Animator Yes!
Elliott The Animator yeah good idea
Elliott The Animator the termites have not yet made eggs
Elliott The Animator its a secret .... lol
I think that the ants are actually massaging the bugs with their antennae, since this likely increases their honeydew production. Dairy farmers have also realized that this works with cows, and so many of them have giant, spinning brushes installed in their barns, so the cows can just walk up and get a massage wherever they feel like it. Apparently, it can increase milk production by up to 25%!
Omg really??!!! Wow!
Woah Facinating.... So they are milking them i thought it was a metaphour
AntsCanada yeah it's pretty interesting. I guess it just makes them happier lol. Here's a link to a video about them.. ua-cam.com/video/K7yDrLCoLwU/v-deo.html
Yes, its really interesting. I read a research report the other day about those spinning things. Apparently the cows were willing to put as much effort in getting a backscratch as in getting food.
It improves mood, and in some cases overall health of the cows leading to an increase in milk production. Also permitting the cows to choose when they want to be milked also allows us to get better, cleaner, and bigger product loads from cows. Magic

Gosh it’s cute to see mealybugs as “ant cows” but goddamn do I hate those things! They attack my orchids constantly no matter what I do and have killed quite a few of of my plants. Ugh. Glad to see someone can appreciate the horrible little beasties!
Edit: make sure you keep them in check because they can do some serious, fatal damage to plants and once they get established it’s almost impossible to get rid of them completely. Luckily they’re easy to squish. I like to use a pokey stick dipped in alcohol, especially because they like to live in deep, hard to reach crevices. They turn a weird reddish brown as soon as the alcohol hits them. It’s really gross but satisfying to see them cease to be a threat! Eww.
Neem oil is pretty effective.

Requests, Suggestions, & Ideas:
- Please name all unnamed species, co-inhabitants, territories, and landmarks
- Antiverse Map
- Ant Flags with real mini flags in the terrariums
- Please fix each species playlist
- Superworm Blattocomposter
- Resurrect all of your previous colonies specially Oecophylla
- Keep an Endemic Species
- Shared Terrariums divided by water
- Ant Condominium for Small Colonies. Different species per floor.
- Hang the Island of Avista.
- More Ant Bite Wednesdays
- More Species (Ghost Ants, Destructor Ants, Harvester Ants, etc). AC Council should decide what to keep first.
- Completely Transparent Soilless Nest (with just coverings for the ants convenience). Species should be easy to keep in captivity.
- Have one those mini models of houses or condos which is covered in glass. Modify it by adding a layer of soil under it. Make sure that the surface of the setup is soilless to make it look like ants replaced humans. Just leave a place where soil is exposed for food, water, sanitation, and cleaning.
- Underwater setup. With a little island as access for food and everything. The ant nest underwater should not be filled with soil. An ant terrarium underwater.
- Framed Colony. Have a closed setup of glass terrarium filled with soil with very thin sides so that you can hang it to the wall like a very large portrait with only 1 tube connected to an outworld for food and cleaning. Make sure the setup is made sturdy to hold the weight of the soil. Put also an opening for soil hydration. You can cover it with something like Ant Flags Poster or the Ant Map for the ants convenience.

Keeping that wire on the bonsai for that long WILL cut into the bark and ultimately harm the tree. I maintain and care for bonsai, please use directional pruning of your plant over bending and rebending the branches. I’m sure you’ll find that the whole ecosystem will benefit from that one simple change in dynamic .

I wonder if they know they’re living in a simulation
"Human Music. hmmmm. I like it."

AC Answer of the Week: Some ants protect mealybugs against other predators. Another interesting fact is that ants use plant material and soil to construct shelters for the mealybugs. In return, they secrete what’s called “honeydew” which means excellent source of food for the ants.
*Year 2054* - So the new ant people have begun to take over the planet with their powers of agriculture.
Wambold But With A 'Q' In other news Antscanada has been elected by the new ant people to be their representative winning by a landslide with a very high approval rating from all ants.
One thing that i love the most in this channel is your English speaking, your pronounciation is on point! You helped me develop my listening skill soooo much thank youuu AC 😆😆😆
I LOVE the perspective that you bring to farming, etc, because so few humans think in such a way without intensively observing nature! You're wonderful and I think everyone should watch this channel!!
As cool as this is, you can say goodbye to that tree. An army of parasites may be too much for a small bonsai tree.
Honestly I can't tell. Since the ants contribute to the tree growth as well as AntsCanada himself, I don't know if the tree can regain its nutrients as fast as the Mealybugs take them. Maybe we'll see when the MB population inevitably grows
This. You have to kill them ASAP or they spread like wild fire.
I wonder if there is some way to make enough honeydew that I could get ants to become my traveling companions while I roam around in my yard to. They could keep gnats away from me while I am in the yard. I wish my eyesight wasn't going bad. I finally find something so great and educational as this channel and now astigmatism decides to show up. I spent the first half of my life with nearsightedness and now I can't see anything without holding it at arm's length, except on my TV screen. I have my computer hooked up to the TV screen and now in UHD. I absolutely love your videos now being in UHD. I am going to keep watching them as long as you keep making them or as long as I can still see, and maybe even just listen and imagine after. I still want to learn more about ants and your enthusiasm is infectious, in a good way.
Have you ever tried or thought about beekeeping? I find them fascinating as well. Their social systems seem very similar in a lot of cases. I would love to learn how similar their matriarchal systems really are and how those systems differ, at least overall. I know there are so many species of both that there will be big differences in some cases. Depending on the species of each, I'm sure any comparison would be as far apart as apples to oranges. Or would it?
I wish I had had this channel when I was a kid and constantly asking questions no one knew the answer to. They always just said kill whatever I was fascinated with in the insect world. Nope. Not if I can help it. They are far too entertaining to kill them just for being there.
Thats a big comment
I hope your eyes are doing okay, it's a shame how our bodies can loose something so essential to our survival like sight or hearing.
remember, if you have a fascination for insects (or anything at all) never give up on it if someone doesn't feel the same as you. Do what you love and makes you happy.
TLDR
I found out that it might not be the ANTs milking the mealybugs but the mealybugs just dumping their waste and the ANTs picks it up Gorgeous Love the 4k videos =) cant wait for the next episode!

I have always been interested in all insects but this channel made me think that ants are probably one of the most interesting.
I have an unidentified colony. I rescued the queen from drowning in my pool and the first workers hatched a couple of days ago.
It has been recorded not to long ago but ants do make noises like squeaking sort of sounds. Not sure if they use this to communicate as well or for warning I'm not sure but does make sense most creatures do make noises of some type.
Trees can scream too.
I love how you made Avista look like! And the bobble heads are also so cool looking on this island.
I wonder if there are any universities, entomologists, or myrmecologists watching these videos with baited breath. I like to imagine there’s a small community of professionals using AntsCanada footage for discoveries/understanding. (At the very least, it’s educational for laymen!)
Perhaps that’s idealistic, but AntsCanada is without a doubt the prime source on UA-cam. I can’t imagine there’s much footage out there unless a specific study has set it up themselves.
Justin his video showing a cockroach giving birth while being eating is on the NatGeo UA-cam channel
Rook Star I think even National Geographic used that footage for a segment
Jack Kearney Thank You for the correction
Ant Scientists have their own colonies. They do nothing else but study ants all day every day .
Plus they have state of arts cameras and tons of other equipment. They even glue microchips to individual ants to track them and do other ridiculous things.
Thats how governments spend our taxes ^^
Antscanada is just UA-cam channel with good production and clickbaity titles, hes not doing anything groundbreaking ^^ H refers to himself as god in every video, you dont need to boost his ego even more. ^^
Actually one of his ant colonies was a rarely studied species of ants and he was able to make a couple of small new discoveries about them to give to an entomologist friends of his. He doesn’t have that colony anymore because they escaped :( but it was cool while it lasted.

Agriculture or animal husbandry?
Both! According to google this activity falls under the category of "agriculture" but it is also a case of animal husbandry!
According to "like everybody" AntsCanada falls under the category of "awesome" and "best channel ever".

3:35 If you look at the abdomens, you can see that the ants tending the mealybugs have a pretty heavy mite load, still. It looks like the mites still haven't transitioned out of phoresy yet.
It appears those pesky mites have REALLY high living standards.
These updates on the Bobbleheads makes me want to keep a Pheidole colony even more! Fingers crossed for Fall when they fly near me :D

Polymorphic abts are evrywere in my back yard. There are no supermajors thoe and only boring bigheaded majors. Also i raided a colony in my back yard abd succseded to kidnap the queen and start my own ant colony. Also i captured alates by accident asweel.
I hope u get a colony.

Play the AntsCanada drinking game: Do a shot every time he says "AC Family".
Would you say that these are your most intelligent colony?
Hmmm... not sure. I think ant intelligence is collective intelligence so it highly depends on the number of members in the colony. A larger colony can problem solve much more effectively than a smaller colony can. This means then that my "smartest" colonies would be the Fire Nation, Golden Empire, or the Dark Knights. However, if we are just talking individual intelligence, I don't think any of them match the solo intelligence of each Black Panther (Diacamma) worker because of their independent nature!
Collective intelligence hmm.... The ants are trying to start their own Borg Collective here.
had mealybugs infestation of my cactus and succulents collection before... absolutely hate them >:l
I learned that mealybugs can walk. And spit out Honey dew
My Sweet Little Reborn I thought it was adorable when it was walking.
I know right
Is it me or this channel gets more interesting than the KSI vs. Logan Paul DRAMA😂 #AntLOVEForever 🐜💙
Terom J nah but better story tho
@@keenangrant7780 booo
I like to imagine what the ants 'say' to each other.
"Alright! There is a meal worm stuck at the entrance! Get some soldiers to support the workers!"
"Who's on nightshift for the cattle!"
"I'll do it!"
"Great, make sure to put it in your social stomach this time"
"On it"
"I'm back from my shift"
"Excellent, go to the resting chambers and get ready for tomorrow"
*above*
"Hands incoming!"
"Move!"
That's what I like to think at least. Not sure about you guys and gals.
Ultidragonlord I imagine that too!
We share the same train of thought
😂 😂 😂
That's perfect
Lolololololol hahahahaahahhaha
You know that one day the tree is going to die cuz of those bugs •́ ‿ ,•̀

BouncingInAsphalt my new motto
These mealybugs looks and really acts like sea cucumbers when they poop those honeydews. A sea cucumber can squirt water just like the mealybugs when they're out of the water!

You can't tell from these videos that I am a long time DM, player, and reader of the novels? Water-Air Genasi Wizard, Neutral Good, Skill: Flight Mist Form 😉
I wonder what Will happen if ants can be used as weapons
Or should i say Dungeons and Ants! haha!

Classic
They have mites
About plants fertilizing the soil for plants, that can actually go pretty far too! Have you heard of plants in the genus Myrmecodia? They do live in Southeast Asia and Australia. These plants have evolved hollow chambers that allow ants to actually live inside them! These are often parts of the tubers, and when cut and opened reveal chambers much like ant colonies.
Hey what ever happened with the termites
I'm always incredibly delighted to hear this guy talking about ants... he's so passionate and happy about bugs and the enthusiasm is infectious! :D
Next, ants need to collectively get mealybugs and aphids on one big tree and create a massive ant city to rival humans :)
The top videos of UA-cam!
Ants : we protect u,u give us honeydew

You may start to run into a problem or 2 with that bonsai tree. It stays a Bonsai with two major keys...1) You cut off all new growth, save for one leaf here or there if you want it to grow and only "trained" in the direction you want...and 2) the roots stay root-bound to help prevent/restrict growth. The problems will be from the two containers under the pot that will allow the roots to grow and 1) will give the tree explosive growth (as seen) for a time, and 2) will eventually choke off the drainage holes with root growth which will block off any passage for the Ants.
I find it interesting the way the ants have found such a symbiotic relationship with other insects like that, but I personally hate it. I have lost so many plants in my gardens because of the billions of ants we have outside that transfer the aphids and their eggs to select plants. Baby powder has always worked indoors, but outdoors is another thing. I'm not exaggerating when I say billions, I may even be underestimating. The biggest trail I've found was a thick/dense 2 inch wide trail (that I could see from ~25 feet away) that converged from 3 trees in one neighbor's yard, 80 feet across our yard, through the bougainvillea where it mixed with others and split into two 1.5 inch trails going into the neighbor's yard, and ~30 feet to our recycle bin full of cans, and back.
16:32 Hit Or Miss, 2019 ANYONE?
Mystygin she follows me in other videos now too? Release me witch! Jk
*The BobbleHeads*
Gg
Bunch of mealybugs, 1 ants
That plant will die. Same thing happened to my lemon plants. They got infested
weah cuz those milibugs are parasites.. they eat up the food of the bonsai.. but bonsai is a tree... so chances are low.. unlike smaller plants..
The act of holding that steady and into place at that opening shows more intelligence than I ever knew an ant had..The mealybug tending also shows intelligence. This channel has put a new perspective on what I think abt ants.
16:52 anyone knows the music... I NEED IT!!
Yeah it's fcking lit
21:46 Wait, so you are a flat earther?
No! Islands don't have to be flat. Lol
AntsCanada

In the next episode: Ants make a fortress out of dirt, cockroaches shells and stones.
3:48 - This makes me wonder if there are any ants that think milking mealybugs for honeydew is animal cruelty lmao
Just a week ago I was outside my apartment building and was freaked out by an all white bug I'd never seen before.. crazy how just a week later the same bug is spotlighted on one of my fav UA-cam channels 😁😁 #Mealybugs
Hope you killed them-
