I had a 1970 145S (4 cylinder station wagon) in the same grey colour. It served me very well for many years. Finally cracked a piston after 270,000 miles and I couldn't afford to fix it so off it went to the scrapper. It's great that this 164 will live to fight again. Good on you, Nick.

I had a 144GL, 1972. I bought it when it was 35yrs old and sold it when it was 40. Cost me £450, never let me down, even in the most challenging weather conditions etc. Best car I've ever had. Looked the business as well.

Nick is an honest to goodness kind soul and great professional mechanic. This literally brought tears to my eyes, I miss my grandparents every day. They only ever bought 1brand new car, a 1973 Plymouth Satellite Sebring. Id give anything to be able to drive to their house and see the Plymouth parked in the driveway knowing my grandparents are home.

I’m from Sweden and in my home town many years ago, a Volvo 164 collided head on with an American car. Can’t remember what make but anyhow, speed was moderate and no one was hurt. The fender and grill on the Volvo was banged up pretty bad but... the frame on the yankee cracked and the car was basically toast.

This can be a real beauty. The Volvo B30 is running very smooth and is an easy engine working on. In my younger days I was the proud owner of first a 1973 Volvo 164E, one of the first with fuel injection, square rear light and updated interior. After that I got a similar one, but from 1974 which was the last model year for the 164. The Volvo is a very strong car, build like a Tank.
All spare part are still available here in Europe, but when you start rebuilding the carburetors it might be more easy to buy parts for a SAAB 99 or 900 that are using the same type and size.
    Best regards from Denmark

Fantastic response from the many great people of Sweden on this project. I had a 1971 144 s with the B20 B motor, funky car and had a lot of good memories of it. The 1970s was the decade that really belonged to Sweden, remember Abba?

    3.0 L B30 straight 6 . 145 hp if I remember it right . The fuelinjected 164E had 160 hp.
The diagonal emblem are often missing . Its a Volvo thing ☺. Here in Sweden they are rusted up , because of roadsalt due to icy roads during winter. Love the show !

The engines are rock solid. As long as it hasn't completely seized in storage, you should be able to bring everything back together. Common stuff to watch out for: The automatic transmissions are a Borg-Warner units that tend to crack internal coolant lines. Water pump bearings tend to fail quickly and propel the fan into the radiator. Swap the Zenith Carbs for Webers. Much more durable and easier to balance. Check the front shock/strut towers for rust at the bolt holes. No real electrical issues, except the age of the alternator. AC/Delco I think still makes them. IIRC, it has four wheel discs. The parts might be a bit chancy.

this takes me back my uncle had the estate version of this Volvo..he owned for years..he was a painter and decorator and the car was his van and his family car he went everywhere in it ..I remember being in it getting lifts when my cousins and me used to get lifts to discos and pubs...the battery was rubbish it went flat one winter and he never bothered to change it,because it was a manual box we either pushed it to start or he would use the crank handle ,one turn and it was running..it had a red seal engine which was supposed to be special lol ..the thing used to drip oil so bad it would have cost a fortune to keep being new oil so he just out a tray underneath. the engine and caught the drips of oil and when he was going outnin it he would just tipped the oil from the traynetraight back into it lol...it was truly a tank...like an oxblood type color with a really long floor change gear stick...bullet proof old car,is love to own one but they aren't cheap now..good luck with it

This is a fantastic car from the golden age of Volvo. The B30 engine is one of the most solid engines ever built. It's a 3 liter straight six based on the B20 which was a 4 cylinder and 2 liters. The Volvo engineers basically just added two cylinders. As long as you keep it somewhat lubricated and cool it will keep going. It also has a very nice sound to it. My friend had a 73 with fuel injected engine, 4 speed manual gearbox with an electric overdrive. Greetings from Gothenburg Sweden!

I'm into newer Red Blocks (B21-B230FT )but if memory serves me correct, the oil pump drive shaft has a fiber bushing/coupling that fails with age an causes a lose of oil pressure. This may only apply to the B18 & B20 series. Many online forums discuss this such as Brickboard, Mathew's, etc.

The latter I added some lowering rally or proportional springs, sway bars front 1 1/4" and 3/4" rear with Good year eagle Gt's 60 series on all four corners. I used a simple airflow meter consisting of 4 glass tubes,(I even used one that was a clear plastic tube with a section of tape measure behind it) with the bottom of the tubes in water, hoses to each tube and, for a two CV carb setup, one might use one tube to manifold pressure and one tube to venturi vacuum on each carb.
I used this type on an old 70's Yamaha, and for a few different types of technical measurements. Airflow in a HVAC duct (cross-section area of duct plus inches of water vacuum can estimate duct volume or speed) and a low-pressure operated mechanical solenoid (HAD) used for fire protection CO2 discharge. Manuals or service videos might provide specific readings to tune these carbs.

Awesome!! When I was 23 my mothers Uncle gave me his 1954 Ford Customline 4 door sedan with a 239 CID OHV engine and a 2 speed Fordomatic transmission. The car had been driven for 23 years mostly on dirt farm roads in the Upstate New York Catskill mountains. It had 200K miles on her without any engine work ever done. The ball joints, steering box, and steering column were toast. The rest of the car was in great condition. I was very fortunate to have an x girlfriends''s father who was a great mechanic help me restore this car to great running order. After the ball joints, steering box and steering column were replaced a basic tune up was done and all fluids were replaced. I "splurged" for a new set of tires with extra wide white walls. I now was the very proud and very appreciative owner of a very unique first car. I drove that car for 3 years extensively and gave it to my younger sister when I was 26 with 225 miles when I moved to California at age 26. . The engine and transmission still functioned flawlessly. My sister drove the car for 4 more years and sold it when it had 260K miles still running strong. The engine never had a head job and did not burn oil. That car was built like a brick shithouse.

The last 164 I saw on the road has a three side draft 44mm webbers and tri 'y's.
I've found the ceramic/plastic fuses Volvo uses to be really unreliable in older cars.
I ended up replacing all of them and did a lot of work on the fuse holder in my 1973 144.
My mums 1980's 240 has the same issues.

That's a solid bullet proof cast iron 3l engine. Here in Sweden some guys have pulled more than 600 hp out of a B30 block with turbo. I'm sure you are aware of that the carbs should have oil in them. Thanks for a very nice friendly interesting channel. I'm still trying to figure out why you say that the front badge isn't stock...

Per Holmberg. I was told that it is a factory badge. I am no expert on Volvo but it looks like someone put it there from a later model. I will fix it to be solid on the front grille, just the way it came from the factory.

Very neat car, very original! Wonderful color combo, and the diagonal Volvo logo piece is absolutely there from the factory. Auto is a drawback, but conversion to a manual is bolt up with parts.
All you need to do is clean them carbs and replace rubber diaphragms under the tops. One or both are cracked. 4 Phillip's screws per carb. 5 minute job. Outside of that, she's a runner.

I have owned several of those Volvo 164’s- the engines are indestructible iron tractor motors.
I still have some parts for that model. Send me a message if interested.

Nice project. I was the second owner a 1969 145S Wagon. Too bad it was totaled in1979. Be sure to replace the rubber diaphragms in the carburetors.
    164 6 = 6 cylinder, 4 = 4 doors. I believe that made a wagon also.

Great video. Not the usual here, but interesting just the same. Looking forward to seeing you go through those carbs. Back in the 80's I had a few Triumphs & old MG's from the 60's & 70's, I know those side draft carbs can be a challenge. They just never seemed right. Can't wait to see them properly addressed. I hope you keep us in the loop. Thanks.

If you put on a modern fuel injection and do some work on the head or get a better one, it´s np to go out with 240-300hp. The B30a can take it if it´s in good condition. Good luck guys!!

Plenty of pages here in Sweden can still supply with New original stock parts for this , the P120 and even PV544. Those prices are more expensive, but good reproductions are available as well for much cheaper and more than often done with salvaged volvo equipment or similar.

There are service manuals for download online for that car. Just google it. I got my first car when i was 18. It was a 1956 Chevrolet 210 2 dr. 6 cylinder, 3 on the tree. I was 20 years old in 1970 and we had a Volvo dealership a few doors down from the shop. I was a 2nd year apprentice then and i forget most of what i learned about them. Have fun, Nick.

I hope we get some updates on the 164. Engine should be up and running in no time but perhaps the brakes/servo might need some sorting out along with the brake lines. Looks like at least one new spare wheel well be needed. Full panel available. Off the shelf exhaust systems a bit thin on the ground.

Hi Nick Adam from Australia. I had one of these when I was 18 my first car. Well nothing u can't handle. Clean carbs make sure it has right damper oil in carb to heavy will slow the slides down ...... poor throttle response. Think penrite have correct oil. Balance carb with gauges. Check valve clearance. They do wear cams look for poor lift on rotation when adjusting tappets. New points and timing you should be in business. These are strong engines. Steel crank. Think 10:5/1 comp. They have potential for good power. Oh the grill emblem is original. Good luck with it. Will be watching in interest.

Gary Fisher yeah OK I thought it was light oil. Was also a little off with compression ratio too. The US got low compression engines. It's been along time since I played with these cars.

The Stromberg-Zeniths don't have slides like the SU's they have diaphragms. After all this time, even if the carbs were rebuilt, which seems unlikely by the look of them , they should be changed. Easy to find and there are several old school companies who can supply just about everything for these cars.

Nick worked on these in the70s i loved these old Volvo's.
I still work on the newer stuff too BUT new cars are poor in my opinion compared to the older stuff.
New cars are plastic junk and expensive to repair.
The badge on the front grille may be original ,all Volvo's had a badge on the grille.
They were kind of bullet proof i would not be surprised once you overhaul the Stromberg carbs the car will
    run ok.
I had forgot about the dash board style until i saw you video, how simple and effective.
    Good luck.Tam ,Edinburgh,Scotland.

I did my apprenticeship at a Volvo dealer in Sydney. These were the last word in luxury from Volvo. It would have cost $6k in 1970. The 3tr motor was an extended B20 two litre. The earlier B18 had SU's and they were a pig to tune, thats what they later went with Stromburgs or Zeniths and then FI. In Australia, that car restored would get $50k. These Volvo B18/B20/B30 were originally used in Volvo Penta marine and stern drive engines. You could not break them. They had modest power (B18 120hp, B20 125hp, B30 160hp). In Sweden they are really popular in historic rallying. You can get a drivable B20 engine to produce 250hp and drive it all day. 300hp would be possible with the B30. They are well in excess of 100hp per litre through a number of tuning shops in Sweden and Finland. ....All running pushrods and Webers. Google a guy in Sydney. His name is Gerry Lister.
    volvodownunder.com.au/gerrylister/About/about_Gerry_lister.htm
He can find you any part for any of these earlier Volvo's. Hidden in the back of his shed is the official Volvo factory 142 built for the London to Sydney Marathon in 1968. It has a priceless aluminium Repco cross flow cylinder head. There were only five of these ever produced and only for rallying. It was designed and manufactured by the same crew at Repco in Sydney who designed the Repco Brabham F1 engines for Jack Brabham, with which he won two F1 world championships.

In HS my buddy Dave had an early 242 that had been auto-X'd by the previous owner so it had heavier springs, sway bars and Koni shocks along with the stock 4-wheel discs and some really nice Michelins. The motor was toast but it had twin SU carbs. We had it rebuilt, ported the head and bought a 'hot' cam from the local Volvo dealer. This was @ 1982-83 and we used to go hunting for late model Camaros and TransAms in the thing. It was a hoot to blow 'em away in that ugly lump!

Hey Nick how ya going mate, Phil here from sunny Australia. Can't remember how old i was when i got my first set of 4wheels but i can remember the car. It was a Mazda 1300 wagon. What year model i do not know. My dear old dad gave it to me and he said " if you get a good run out of it then give me a couple hundred bucks". I had the car for about 8 months before it had a major malfuction and i said to him, "hey dad here's some bucks for the mazda" and he said "that's not a good run put those dollars towards a better ride and come see me in a couple years".. Where would we be without our father to give us a leg up when we need it. Cheers Nick and keep doing what you do because from where i'm sitting you are doing a bang up job.. Good Luck Always.

Well... I live in Swedistan for a year of 10 or so and I have not seen one around here! But as an Alfa-Romeo guy I think it is missing 3 double Del Orto’s. The car is bullit prove, and with a lot of TLC it can be a lifelong keeper! Please add a good ignition system on it, so it will fire up any time. 123 ignition sells a good system that’s ”cheap” and will prolong the life of the car without any poroblem...and buy an after market dell orto carb system. Can cost you a 1000 bucks (maybe a bit more) but it is wourth it. Keep up the good work!
