@@jingalls9142 Of all the musicians who died young, I regret his early passing the most. I think he was just getting warmed up with The Sound of Perseverance.
i actually think of all the riffs here, Schism had the worst time transfering to double bass. It's supposed to be clear, crisp and tightly locked into a rhythmic grid, the flab of the upright is not doing it any favours
Thanks for putting Peaches in there! JJ Burnel was the reason I first picked up a bass, but would probably be near the top of my list of "Bass players Paul has (probably) never heard of". However, once again you've surprised and delighted me with your choice of inclusions. Plus it really made me laugh hearing it played like that, so a big win all round.
Actually think Peaches kinda makes sense on upright, JJ's tone is so thunky and raucous that it kind of suits it (and it's not too rhythmically fast; there's plenty of space and room to get a good attack for it). Maybe a couple of other Stranglers lines too if I think about it, hmmm
Your title was 100% correct. I was watching this with the volume cranked, and there was a knock at the door. The You Tube Police. They said you should not only not play this, but you can't listen without headphones.
Genius episode, dude. Thank you so much for all that effort and inspiration you put into this one. My dad played upright bass and saxophone in little jazz bands around Rensselaer, Indiana in the 1950s to cover what his scholarship didn't. And then he never touched either instrument again for 30 years, until at an impromptu family reunion/wake, he took my electric bass out of my hands, sat in a chair, holding my (then) new Fender upright...and just rattled off all that stuff he was into all those years ago as if he had been practicing for a musical reunion all along. (Very musical family, very few of whom perform anymore.)
You have some of the absolute best double bass videos out there. This is pure gold and I just had to subscribe! Despite my love of the sound of double bass, I still just play my dinky little electric bass guitars, and have mad respect for those of you who make the dog houses sing!
Interesting thing about the Death lick is that Chuck wanted to have Steve DiGiorgio play on pretty much all the last Death records, so we could've had Spirit Crusher on a fretless bass. Not exactly an upright, but a lot closer in style!
Any time Primus shows up in one of these videos, you know they already do it. That’s why I love Primus, they’re such an underrated band that gets a lot of hate
Hey pdbass! I loved your video on Mick Karn who is someone I adore lots. I was wondering if you would ever do a video on another british bassist, namely Mark King of Level 42. Mark King really popularized slap bass here in Europe. Cheers!
I got to try an upright bass for the first time about 5 years ago and one of the first few things I tried to play was My Friend of Misery :'D At least I instantly learned an important difference between bass guitar and contrabass
Excellently played & a hoot at the same time ! If it were I playing, after the first minute you'd have heard : clackety clack click clack clack, as my fingers fell off & hit the floor ! Peaches would make a great momentary disruption during a classical piece (think they did something like that in one of the old Pink Panther cartoons).
Used to play Peaches on upright with a group way back when I first started. played it pizz though. Great tune! Also played Toiler on the Sea, might be an even better line. Brunel was a fantastic bassist.
I'm amazed that Death is mentioned anywhere let alone here. And if memory serves it was played on a fretless bass. Great metal band that very few seem to know.
Steve Digiorgio played fretless bass in Death on the Human and Individual Thought Patterns albums. Scott Clendenin played on The Sound of Perseverance (which Spirit Crusher is on) and he did not use a fretless.
@@karlricardo4088 Then my memory does not serve me well. Thank you for the correction. Individual thought patterns and The sound of perseverance are 2 of my favorite albums. Alternate title: The 10 dopest lines on upright bass
😂You’re awesome‼️‼️‼️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🎸💯
They sound fantastic
This is a family channel, no drug talk here.😊
Lol
@@juliosmith4461Dopamine is a neurotransmitter, you pedant.
It's amazing you could hear me complaining about Mr. Krinkle.
Spirit crusher fucking slays, this could easily be a contemporary jazz line
He didn't finish the title: "10 lines YOU should never play on upright bass...cause I'm gonna play them" 😂
...and better than you.😂
siiick. Didnt realize oven mitts were a piece of gear i need
NIB on upright with a bow is badass!!!!!!!
I can't believe the band Death made the cut! Chuck would be proud.
i actually cant believe how well you played panic attack, im an upright bassist and theres no fucking way i could play it that clean
Meanwhile I'm watching this as a guitarist and I can't even comprehend what is going on here
Paul is so amazing, he plays even these metal bass lines perfectly with feel and totally conviction !
Right sounds good to me 🤷
Love N.I.B, sounds great on upright.
Translates TREMENDOUSLY WELL on upright!
I already love your channel, but including "Spirit Crusher" is just icing on the proverbial cake. Hats off, gentlemen.
I've actually done that one before

Does humor belong in music? Absolutely. Kudos for putting the Stranglers in there!
Between Peaches and Spirit Crusher and the Krinkle. Pauls a good cat. Deserving of all of the cookies.
The width and depth of your taste in music is vast! I love it!
Spirit Crusher sounded pretty great!
Love the bass face
Best version of Schism.
i actually think of all the riffs here, Schism had the worst time transfering to double bass. It's supposed to be clear, crisp and tightly locked into a rhythmic grid, the flab of the upright is not doing it any favours
opening with symphony x made me jump
When I grow old I dream to be like this guy (I'm 30).
I gotta say I was surprised to listen to "Spirits Crusher" around here

My reaction on hearing it: “OHHH SHIIIIIIIT” 😄

Came for Primus, stayed for Black Sabbath.
lol. Mr. Krinkle sounds better with gloves
Amazing video, I instinctively said “it goes a 1, 2, 3” after the last one lmao
I read this, then forgot about it, then did the same thing lmao
Playing domination on upright looks crazy. You must have some great skills!
Also, its cool that you included symphony x
Arco playing and bass face are definitely underrated. I'd also love a full version of N.I.B.
"Panic Attack" alone was worth the time, let alone the rest? The intro to "NIB" was beautiful too

Man that Spirit Crusher version GOES HARD
You be a crazy man, and we love you for it!
Holy shit the over mitts add so much to the sound (err.. take away? regardless I love how it sounds. What a weird revelation).
NIB sounds sick
100% it does

Randomly found this video but it has Death, RATM, Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, Primus all on an upright bass. This is great.
I used to play "south of heaven" on mine when I had one 25 years ago
Interesting thing about the Death lick is that Chuck wanted to have Steve DiGiorgio play on pretty much all the last Death records, so we could've had Spirit Crusher on a fretless bass. Not exactly an upright, but a lot closer in style!

Spirit crusher sounds great what legen you are for including it
I like all the heavy breathing and puffing accompanying the performance on this formidable beast :D
Holy shit I have not heard peaches by the strangles since the 80s.
great song
Yeah man! 😂❤🔥 I'm getting my upright restrung and setup (after 12 years mind you 😬) and i WILL be back playing forbidden lines 🤣
!!! What a amazing instrument is the Upright Bass/ double bass is !!!!!!!
I was expecting, and yes, you delivered: THE CLAIRVOYANT!
You can't even imagine how big my smile was when I saw this :) Awesome!
Was NOT expecting Domination. One of my favorite bass intros EVER
Now you've gone and done it. You're on the heavy metal Upright First Call list!
Bruh, your skills are so on point. Some next level almost Stanley chops on that upright.
NIB sounds badass arco, and so does Bombtrack pizz!
Any time Primus shows up in one of these videos, you know they already do it. That’s why I love Primus, they’re such an underrated band that gets a lot of hate
Ok, when you started playing "Peaches" arco, I had this image of Cab Calloway strutting out onto the stage in his white zoot suit to start singing :)
Wow I wouldnt have expected oven mitt to sort of mute the string halfway and bring out a different tone. It sounded good.
1:29 Two 4/4 bars but notated in a weird way
They all sound fantastic on upright bass 😊
That’s it. I need an upright again :) You have just pushed me over the edge I needed
I'm sorry pd but you can't keep all these lines for yourself. I'm going to have to try them on upright as well.
You understood the assignment.

Don’t expect see spirit crusher here, thanks for playing it
Opening with just the RIP of Domination was something I did not expect but enjoyed immensely.
Haha you’re mental… this is probably pretty niche but ridiculously amazing. Kudos!
Yeah, that cover of NIB went insane dude, good work!
That was awesome Paul!!
Paul Chambers on Black Sabbath 😮
I can hear “the stranglers” song being played by a marching band surrounding that bass! Nice work brother!!! And Primus was well done 😂
I have a strict rule to never play any Jaco on upright. Esp. Port of Entry. Not that I couldn't, mind you.
Why can i only like this once??!!?? That was amazing!!!!!
N. I. B. Gave me chills. Fantastic.
These sound amazing! The Metallica one sounded really haunting with the upright…

Was that some cheeky Symphony X in the intro??
I was not dissapointed at all, i love this channel sm!!
Best bass channel on UA-cam. Not even close. 🤘😝
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
That death Bassline with a heavy swing ride would sound so dope!
The takeaway here is that, for the most part, upright bass ≠ metal.
Your face was amazing throughout lol
Or phrased as a corollary:
The invention of electric bass = the invention of hard rock.
bombtrack is such a bombtrack
Sounds so good! NIB took me back to age 13 just learning from records. Sounds great Arco! Cheers Paul!
Love all of these - that bass sounds great !
I kind of liked a few of these probably more than I should have 😂?
Also, speeding the tracks up is somewhat interesting 😜🙌🏽
You are the best! Thank you, any chance of including Iron Maiden’s Phantom of the Opera .. with arco?
You get calluses from cello sure, but I can only imagine the calluses you get from double bass, love to see it getting more popular though!
Bassically. Played f-ing BEAUTIFULLY
Great stuff. That Primus take was hilarious.
Nobody's made upright bass more interesting to so many people who have absolutely no business being interested in upright bass.
This is probably the best advertisement for learning upright bass I've ever seen
Brother, you're one hell of a player.
I’m positive I’ve attempted playing at last half of these on upright bass in high school jazz band
So when are we gonna get an electric upright bass?
“Peaches”. That was truly brilliant
symphony x?? been a while since i heard any of that xD props for the nib solo!
Bombtrack slayed. 😎
Used to play Peaches on upright with a group way back when I first started. played it pizz though. Great tune! Also played Toiler on the Sea, might be an even better line. Brunel was a fantastic bassist.
Excellent as always... I knew you were scary when you played "YYZ" on upright...
So is bow considered the pick of the upright bass?🤔
Super articulation with a german bow! Love the arco! That’s not easy.
