I think its evident that England has a much better squad of players than Spain but Gareth had no clear coaching identity on how to get the best out of the array of talent and in the end they were lucky to stumble all the way to the final with the help of an easy draw.
Are we still banging on about how much better England players are compared to Spain's? Seriously now, after what we have witnessed throughout the tournament? Granted, Gareth Southgate's tactics are cowardly, conservative, reactive, and an eyesore for any football fan, but the players need to take some responsibility for the absolute sh1t3 they have produced. I am sick of players like Declan Rice giving the ball away, incapable of playing accurate passes. Zubimendi who came on for Rodri is a better player and above all a better passer than England's top midfielder, not to mention Fabián or Rodri. These guys would not know this because they obviously never watch Real Sociedad, who are a wonderful team. Most games are won in the centre of the park, and England's midfield is average at best. You cannot take control of a game against decent oposition if your midfielders are incapable of putting 3 passes together under pressure. You don't play like Spain if you don't have wonderful footballers who are great on the ball, you just cannot, irrespective of tactics.
It makes no sense, to pick whoever players as scapegoats. Spain created an absolutely phantastic TEAM with players, who were rated lower, than the English ones. Best example is the substitition of Rodri, which didn't change the level of the Spanish performance. Single things like forming triangles and so on I could hardly discover in English team. They just relied on special moments of single players, while missing out, to create a real team with all these amazing players.
It's easy to blame Southgate but the reality is, England are over-hyped and have always been over-hyped. Their style is boring and their players average. Even Pep, Ancelotti or any other top coach won't win anything with them.
No, they have had great players over the years, but they don't have good coaches for tournament football. For many years, their managers have been too conservative, dropping deep and not using the talents of their players. Their style is boring because of that, not because of the talent pool. A progressive manager like Pep or Klopp would transform them.
If you follow Italy and Gab's comments on them, he is always pretty realistic when it comes to Italy. He was the first to admit that Italy doesn't produce attacking talents such as Baggio, Totti, Del Piero etc. anymore. When Italy won the last Euros, he also said that it was teamwork that won them, not the individuals.
Objectively and factually every team that beat England were better. ESPN has to pander here (because of the overwhelming English audience), but it would be great to have more coverage on the actual winners. The prospects are much more interesting, rather than covering and excusing why England always loses. England also had enormous luck in these tournaments, and never really played well. Maybe they are overhyped by the English media for commercial reasons? Maybe this is their best? These guys know better but they have to pander and play delusional, difficult to watch.
Spain had a bit of luck too with the Unai Simon and Dani Olmo headed save on the line before the end of the game. I'm glad Spain won as a neutral. But that was a close one.
@@Iron-Bridgenot in terms of the amount of attacking football Spain played. The only factor that wanted England to win was their luck and when that ran out, they didn't look for other solutions in terms of goal scoring. 😅 I mean why play a football match for 120 minutes if you are just passing time for a penalty shootout. They also only score goals as a response to other teams scoring btw which is bizzare in itself. 😅 I feel fortune favours the brave and it was not the case until the final, where even fortune washed it's hands off this side. 😅
@@Iron-BridgeI wouldn't call it luck when players do what they're supposed to do. I mean, how many sensational saves did Pickford make? Would you call that luck? You could make the case that Spain could easily have had three or four goals and a comfortable victory.
Every single bookie had Spain as favourites ahead of the game and these so-called football experts were saying that England were the favourites, and that is after criticising Southgate after every single game.
No. You have players like Foden, Bellingham, Kane, Walker, Saka, etc. that play on teams that are positive and offensively aggressive. You can't take that base and turn them into a park the bus team. Southgate did that. England needs a new manager.
I think the biggest problem for England is the fact that under Gary Southgate they have been "lucky" with their draws. A lucky draw means that one doesn't have to perform and adapt to difficult situations. Coaches don't have to be creative and find new solutions to problems, players may get complacent, and your weaknesses are hidden. Southgate has an added problem which is his loyalty to "core" players who under perform. One gets a chance to choose the best players in the best league in the world and yet, Southgate, can't pick the best ones. A national team coach shouldn't be a player's friend, he needs to be rough and demanding.
Some facts: England overachieved with Southgate. English players have a glaring weakness that prevented the national team from winning major tournaments: they have problems keeping possession under pressure and lack creativity. Look at Rice, Walker, Trippier, Stones, and even Bellingham. They get nervous and look out of options. Besides, many of their stars lack discipline and like to drink and party and therefore they are never in good shape at the end of the season when major tournaments are played. 2. England actually tried to press Spain after they scored the equalizer but Spain is just too good.
Spain was the better and best team in this championship, as simple as that. England was favored by going through the weak side and that's it. This scenario was not really winnable for them its pointless to cope. Just move on and plan for the future
The difference between English and Spanish teams is that Spanish players play like blood family and English players play like roommates. Spanish teams are more cohesive for that same reason.
Kane: Top goal scorer in Bundesliga Foden: Voted best prem player Bellingham: Voted best la liga player Palmer: Voted best young prem player Saka & Rice: Arsenal's 2 best players arguably last season Stones & Walker: Serial winners at man city, won everything there is to win in club football together etc Spain did not have the better players, but were the better team in terms of how they were coached and the style of play they stuck to. England looked like the players had never played with each other before.
@@matthewtovey9771 England have a lot of physically powerful and athletic players. They are solid in terms of technique too. From the lower categories in Spain we seek to train intelligent players who understand the game..... Just look at that in under16, under17, under18..... under20..... Spain always achieves good results The mistake made by Spanish teams, such as Real Madrid and Barcelona, is to sign foreign players of dubious quality instead of trusting Spanish players

Southgate said in his post match interview that they didn't keep the ball well. That tells you all about his knowledge of the game. He thinks he can put a bunch of good players together and they'll be able to "keep the ball". Anyone that has watched any high press games (Man city-Liverpool etc) will appreciate that the tactical positions of the players is what dictates how to keep possession and playing around the press etc. The fact that he had no answer to the Spain press + on the other side, Laporte running to midfield with the ball, tells you how inept he is. He just doesn't get it. Any manager in the world would kill to have this squad....especially the front 5/6.
This Jude Bellingham narrative being formed by the media is nonsense. Thank God Jude voiced his frustration early in the second half - the changes made shortly after made a huge difference. The substitution error was made by the 4th official, not Jude saying he didn't want to leave. Jude's been giving interviews including btw after the final, which was the one time they lost. The narrative that he gives interviews when they win, but avoids it when they lose - nonsense. That his teammates don't like him - Only they can say, but so far they've been saying the opposite. He was right after all - it is a pile-on from the media and from social media. He's a good but young player, who had a tough tournament. Had good games, had bad games.
No other team apart from Spain had a chance in "Euro 2008" and "Euro 2024". Both Euro was completely dominated by Spain "2008" by probably the greatest CM partnership assembled in the world in Xavi & Iniesta this one by probably the greatest DM Playmaker in the world in Rodri. Just imagine what these young players in Lamal, Williams, and Pedri will achieve once they add more experience to their game.
YAMAL?!?🤣 We have more talents that are unknown in other sides as well, i was surprised nobody knew how good nico really was. shows how much the english media controls the narrative of how we rate players.
How do ppl like Gab say Spain was a better team but not have better players? Who in that Spain team and in the squad isn't a superior player to English players? I can think of Kane being better than Morata proven internationally, but other than that every Spanish player is no less at all to any English player but actually are better than English players in most aspects, they proved it yesterday and throughout the tournament. Olmo was super in WC and Euros he os better than Foden & Jude, Saka and Nico or Yamal are pretty similar, Rodri is overall better than Rice, Mainoo is not near the other spanish mids like Ruiz, Zubi.., Dani Alvez is better than Shaw, Trippier, and even Walker imo! So why would England win?
A big issue that is rarely discussed is the fact that England produces so few world class coaches....Rooney, Lampard and Gerard did not cut it. Spain, Italy and Germany have world class coaches. England have world class players but a huge gap is that they don't have a blueprint to create the best coaches in the world. Can't think of 1 world class coach from the UK....Fergie as well was not English but Scottish 😅
Just 2 English players have a combined larger $$ contract than the whole Spanish side put together. The difference is that the English had a squad of individuals. Spain has a TEAM.
Dani Olmo had a point to prove in that final. I think he was expecting to take over the reigns from Nkunku at Leipzig. But he ended up spending a lengthy spell on the injury list during which Simons really took up the role which he was expected to take up. He really wanted to prove a point in that final.
@fletcherchristian6411 .English fans in general new that England didn't have a chance as long as Southgate is manager. The press and TV pundits don't represent how English supporters feel. @@fletcherchristian6411, in WC 82, after Brazil, the next best team was France with one of the best midfield ever: Platini, Giresse, Tigana, Genghini/Ferdandez. The match against Germany is one of the best ever. There is a documentary about this match.
@@fletcherchristian6411thank you I’m an England fan and half English but we just can’t seems to do it. I think English lucks tenacity. Unlike other top countries.
@@fletcherchristian6411 , there’s a raging debate at the moment in France about the country football philosophy. The current philosophy was born in 1995, when the French FA decided to rebuild the national team around a new generation of players from the best academies. A new coach came in, the brilliant Aimé Jacquet. He cleaned the house. He decided to no longer select players based on their brilliance alone, but mainly on a combination of absolute discipline and insane talent. The arms race started in France. Out with Cantona, Ginola who were loose cannons who couldn’t follow instructions; in were a young generation of insanely talented young players such as Zidane, Viera, Henry, Trezeguet, Pires, Thurman, Lizarazu, Desailly etc. This team became quickly the best in the world, winning WC98, Euro2000, and losing in the final of WC2006!on penalties. The French football academies focus on producing players who are independent and don’t rely on a system. This is why the French players are so successful. They can play anywhere anytime and be good. The problem is that in modern football, the national teams do not train anymore because the the seasons are too busy and France has problems having a cohesive team. My wish is that Deschamps, who is an amazing leader of men, would resign and that Zidane would take over now. If this happens, France wins the next WC. Zidane has been waiting to take over but Deschamps won’t resign because he doesn’t want Zidane him after a failures. Remember, Deschamps was Zidane’s captain in the national team and at Juve. They have a rivalry going.
Well done to Spain, they are deserved winners. I agree with Jul. Southsimp is tactically inept. I cannot believe that from a squad, which has a plethora of talent and youth, we decided to play someone who is a right back for his club, but starts in midfield. A natural left footed winger who can take on his man and deliver quality passes and crosses, without having to check onto his right before delivering a ball is given a 4 minute cameo role. Palmer, the most influential player of the tournament for England is never given an opportunity to start. The best no 10 in the Premiership has been used on the left. The obvious sight of an out of form and injured “Harry Kane” starting every game, when both reserve strikers were making an immediate impact and gave the opposition defence new problems to deal with. Clueless. I won’t watch England play if he is the manager. It’s simply too frustrating.
Italy won all the games in 2021. Not all on regular time and 2 with PK, but they count as wins. Actually, this Spain team reminded me of Italy in 2021. In terms of football quality this Spain was better, of course. We didn't have some outstanding players that Spain has. But in terms of mental strength, determination and confidence, they were very similar. Which is why, I had put my money on Spain winning it. They never panicked, even when in difficulty. They went on doing their game. That celebration (scream') from Olmo, when he saved the goal in the end, reminded me of Chiellini against Belgium, if I'm not mistaken. 😄 It was so great to watch. There was hunger and a great desire to win in this Spanish team, which was very palpable. I was thrilled when they won. Very deserving.
The ball retention problem with Trent was worse when Declan Rice played with Mainoo...concentrate on watching the match or rewatch it in slow motion please.
That’s because people tend to pay more attention to goal scoring and goal scorers but if you really analyze the game Rodri was the best and most important player for the best team in the tournament.
Blame it on " theu shouldve start watkins or toney , they should start this one and that one " , is just trying not to accept defeat . Spain would beat this team with any player england play

England had an incredible squad and a terrible coach. Spain had a good squad and a truly magnificent coach. Spain didn't dominate the tournament, they played beautifully and they struggled against the last three teams. As someone from Spain, I honestly thought Germany was going to put a stop to Spain's run, not because they were a better team but because they were the hosts. But honestly it's quite obvious these pundits don't watch la Liga...
Remember all these world class players in the ENGLAND squad r world class according 2 the English media, the premier league is the best league but it's the foreigners in it that make it good, at the end of the final Bellingham boots the water bottle carriers on the way down the tunnel
as others in the comments note, let's hear more about the victors, analysis of spanish players, tactics etc. and this is coming from a person from the u.s.
Which is astonishing because for so many years in Spain we were slave to having the national team being all Real Madrid players. Back then when only 2 foreigners were allowed in the leagues, of course. Once they were allowed Real Madrid stopped having national players.
The biggest failure of England was all the media hype about the team made by Murdoch press - everybody was hating England. The second one have been impotent tactics of the manager and the third was the over 😂estimated English players - playing in the Premier League made them not automatically champions. No Team no championship!😂😂😂😂
For England to not win ONE Euro Championship in their history is an indictment on the nation. Their fans and media think they are better than they are and the whole nation lacks a winning mentality. If Southgate had the best tactics, they'd still fail because they'd tighten up and lose it mentally.
They both predicted Thursday Spain to loose and England to win they mad Spain won cause Spain beat Italy and knocked out France so they barely talk about them as if the euro champs don't matter
Way more superior teams than England have failed on the highest stage, yet this absolute exceptionalism/entitlement coming from fans, press, and commentators, thinking they have a right to win is disgusting.
You summed this up beautifully ❤ Yet the English media and England fans still don't understand why non-England fans dislike their national team so much.

Totally true.
They're fine enough, c'mon.
No, they have had great players over the years, but they don't have good coaches for tournament football. For many years, their managers have been too conservative, dropping deep and not using the talents of their players. Their style is boring because of that, not because of the talent pool. A progressive manager like Pep or Klopp would transform them.

All "The expert pundits said England's going to win cause their do"
Marcotti non capisce niente.
Thank you *spain* for saving the world
Some facts:
England overachieved with Southgate.
Undermining Spain squad 😂, they have real good players on that squad
He looks great with the Spanish shirt

In terms of the future: Gavi, Pedro, Balde, Cubarsi, at least. England has nothing even close. Get over it.
YAMAL?!?🤣 We have more talents that are unknown in other sides as well, i was surprised nobody knew how good nico really was. shows how much the english media controls the narrative of how we rate players.
Media always surprised when England loses. Bunch of nonsense every tournament.
