In 1991, Gastineau began a career in boxing, lasting five years. In his first fight, Gastineau knocked out Derrick Dukes in the first round. Dukes, a professional wrestler, later admitted he took a dive. TV newsmagazine show 60 Minutes interviewed several others that fought Gastineau and were told to take dives to make Gastineau look good. His career ended in 1996 when he lost to another former football player, Alonzo Highsmith. In 18 career bouts, his record in boxing was 15 wins, two losses, and one no-contest.
I second that motion!..Deacon was the original sack leader, it’s a shame the NFL didn’t count that stat back in the day of good ol pro football at its best! 🏈🤙🏼
I grew up in Nassau County, Long Island, NY. The Jets would practice at Hofstra University, which was off of a main LI road called "Hempstead Tpke" which fed into the Southern State Parkway. In the 80s I was heading down that way on the weekend when the traffic crawled to almost a halt. The reason - Mark Gastineau, in all his glory, was riding a Schwin Stingray bicycle down Hempstead Tpke but had stopped by the Southern State Plwy exit to fluff up his mulletted mane, preening and primping to the rubbernecking cars sharing the road with me. All 6'5", 260 lbs of him straddled aloft a bike that looked like a toddler's tricycle in comparison to his enormous size. Glorious indeed!!
Deacon was a machine. He had 3 22+ sack seasons when PFF went back and graded the old players sacks game by game from game footage. No other player has had more than 1. His sacks per attempt rating is the 2nd highest ever, only behind the Minister of Defense, Reggie White.
No way he gets elected now , at least while he's alive. No one from the HOF committee wants to see that guy behind a microphone. He's an unstable man child
Idk how I feel about this. Mark is literally seen hugging Michael Strahan just after that game he broke the record, and NOW he confronts Brett Favre about it? He needs to let this pain go.
Brett Favre is only guilty of being a naive jock, which is more than I can say of our lawmakers who openly give favors to lobbyists with our tax dollars and legislation! Where is the outrage to that!
Show what happened the play before the sack. Brett threw a ball away to avoid a sack then Pointed to Strahan essentially saying he’s give him the sack which he did
I’m not gonna lie, he has a point, not saying Strahan wouldn’t have sacked him but he literally gave him that sack record, I’ve seen BF keep plays alive to chunk it down the field, that’s where Aaron Rodgers get it from!
This dude's ghost has haunted him since that day, and he chose to speak up. It may be crazy but perhaps getting it off his chest is the best thing for him to do before hes gone.
@HR-up5lf looking back at the comment. I completely read it wrong earlier. My bad on that. My brain reacted as belittling it. I get it now. Thanks for the input
Brett Favre was wrong for taking that dive, But mark was in the wrong for being petty and confronting Brett about it. Mark needs to let it go. It’s unfortunate that the sack record went down like that, but it is what it is. And I’m a proud NY Jets fan.
I think Mark had to say his peace and now maybe he can let it go. He had to let Brett know that he knew Brett took a dive. I honestly watched very little football and never heard of this until now. He took a dive
Call it childish if you will but it really shouldn’t have been a sack. Brett’s knee was down before Strahan even touched him. People need to understand Mark played in an era where guys played a brutal game for pennies. Giving Mark that honor and making the hall of fame would have at least made it worth it for him. Being in the hall of fame should be earned not given.
Actually, Strahan only had 34 more sacks than Gastineau did, in 100 more starts. Gastineau averaged a sack per start and was better than Strahan at getting to the quarterback but didn’t play for nearly as long.
Say what you want about Gastineau, but that play was scripted for Strahan to get the sack record. You can tell it's supposed to be a run play b/c the o-line is pushing forward, but Brett didn't hand the ball off and ran straight to Strahan. Pathetic!
I see nothing wrong with a man telling another man to his face that he wrong him. He didnt start a fight. He didnt pull out a gun. He just a gave him a piece of his mind! Everyone knows that if that sack record wasnt on the line, brett would have tried to get out of that sack, stepping up in the pocket, throwing the ball away or something. He gave up on the play
Mark Gastineau has a point. Michael Strahan got the all time NFL sack record by conspiracy. Brett Favre and Strahan were buddies and Favre took a dive for him. I watched that game live and that’s all the announcers talked about. Everybody knew Strahan was close to getting the record and this was his last chance to do it, as it was the last game of the regular season and the final seconds were ticking away in the Packers’ 34-25 victory. On that “record achieving play”, nobody blocked Strahan because the entire Packers offensive line knew the play was a run play. And with Strahan lined up outside the line, there was no need to block him. But suddenly Favre runs a naked bootleg and all but walked right into Strahan’s arms. And all of Mark Gastineau’s teammates who denigrate him are jealous. And other than Joe Klecko, none of them were anywhere close to achieving the stats that Mark had. And if ANY of them had achieved an NFL record, guarantee they’d be proud of it and pissed if there was a conspiracy to run a fake play that resulted in them losing that record, a record that would all but guarantee them being inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. I never really was a fan of Mark Gastineau or Joe Klecko or the New York Jets, but Gastineau was robbed of his record by two HOF players who cheated to steal Gastineau’s record. Also, look how Michael Strahan is remembered as compared to Mark Gastineau.
Michael Strahan played much more recently and won arguably the most iconic Super Bowl ever. Write another thesis though defending this grown man's tantrum.
Bro STFU. They literally tell you the main reason they don’t like him is because he was a selfish player in a team sport and you still try to claim they’re just “jealous”?!?! You and Mark both need to grow up with that kind of thought process.
Gastineau is a hypocrite his first boxing match was a set up. his opponent took a dive, in an effort for Gastineau to eventually fight G Foreman for many $$$$$$$$$$ he was trying to fake a win record. he has no class
For sure, several of his co-conspirators have already pled guilty so why is this clown allowed to walk around as if nothing happened. We all heard him on tape asking if people will find out if this rich dude taking money from poor people could become public. He and Rodgers are great at killing their legacies, time to just go away
Thus far, innocent until proven otherwise. However, Favre is guilty of being naive, which is more than I can say of our lawmakers who openly give favors to lobbyists with our tax dollars and legislation! Where is the outrage to that!
@@pl1532 Terribly ironic, a highly naive comment about a rich con artist being naive. he may be in the wrong for holding this grudge all this time but you have to admit that it was pretty lame of Favre to hand the record to Strahan on a silver platter instead of Strahan earning it fair and square.
I understand it's been 20+ years, and people forget... But Favre absolutely took a dive. Up 9 with two minutes left in the final game of the season, Favre walked over to Strahan before the play and talked to him. Then he audibles to a run left, doesn't hand the ball off, and instead runs right over to Strahan and slides down. It was disgraceful and obvious, go watch the broadcast and the announcers are shocked. After the game even the Packers' OL was pissed. It was a big deal, and was a black mark on Strahan's career for a long time. Gastineau is right to be pissed. Unfortunately he makes himself look like a fool here. But make no mistake, Favre knows what he did. He can play dumb all he wants, just like he played dumb in the courtroom after stealing money from the poor.
The criteria for a sack was different back then. The game is always evolving. Believe it or not, there was a time when a catch was a catch and receivers didn't need to worry about having "control of the ball"
Speaking as a Giants fan, I absolutely can not blame Mark Gastineau for being upset, Favre absolutely took a dive that last game of the season. Gastineau has every right being mad.
