Resin Art - Holographic Hexagons in a sea of rainbows - Wall art on a mirror.

  • As soon as I learned you could peel holographic window film off cured resin I wanted to do something bold with it. Experimentation showed me that it works best when flat, and that it's hard to get the film to take any other shape anyway. I also found that it worked best for wall art if it was black rather than transparent - its better transparent if you can hang it in a window. So anyway I came up with a few designs and settled on a hex pattern with clear colored resin in between. To make the rainbow colored resin pop i went for a mirror background. I picked up 6 of these mirrors for 10 bucks at home depot as an impulse buy - thats cheaper than any canvas or aluminum board! Downside is they are heavy and I worry about breaking them... The result is great, although when you get light reflecting off the mirror through the clear resin, the hexes are all shining and glittering too and it kind of melts your brain a little.
    The hexes came out ok, although I'd have preferred them a bit blacker, even though I used a huge amount of color in there. I think I'm getting some light reflecting through and back off the mirror and so the holographic effect is actually a bit much sometimes (didn't think I'd be saying that!). I had intended to cut the hexes out with a knife or even a pair of scissors, but the Total Boat resin is new to me and cured way faster than the other brand I use , meaning I had to use a saw to cut them. worked out ok in the end and i'm pleased with how they look. Previously (last week) I tried this same thing but using black mica as the colorant. That was a disaster as the mica reflected all the light and killed the effect. The hexes looked grey instead of black and it was just a bit meh. So I started over with the alcohol ink.
    Anyway, i really hope you like it and can take something from it. I realize it wont be to everyone's taste, but if you get some inspiration or an idea you'd like to try using a similar method, let me know in the comments below.

    2nd comment I would definitely buy an expensive photo camera for close-ups of that at all different angles for photo poster prints etc etc. That looks amazing, one of a kind piece of art from your mind to reality, I love it, just thought you could profit from prints and such take close ups of it :>) Take care everyone.

    This is very cool. If the film was on the glass, after you let the resin cure, were you cutting through the glass? It’s hard to know exactly how you did this since you aren’t speaking. I would love to try this.

    • @PourAwayFluidArts

      It was only on the glass to ensure I poured enough resin to cover it. I only cut through the resin.

    I am new to resin art. I have a question. Will the resin stick to the mirror, or will it fell off? Must I prepare the mirror first? Sorry for my English, I am German. Thank you for your beautiful art and inspiration. It's absolutely stunning.

    • @PourAwayFluidArts
      @PourAwayFluidArts  3 роки тому +1

      Epoxy sticks well to glass. It'll be fine. It does peel off plastic and coated aluminum etc, which can be useful. I've never had it peel off anything by itself though. It has always taken a bit of effort.

    I didn't see a link to where you got the window film was it just Amazon holographic window film I've seen this in another video and I'm wondering if I could put it down in a silicone mold like you lay a layer of it down and use the mold to cast resin with I wonder if it'd be reusable though

    • @PourAwayFluidArts
      @PourAwayFluidArts  2 роки тому

      Not sure on the reusable... I've seen people make silicone molds using it though, so that might work. Yes just purchased from amazon... Rabbitgoo or something?

    • @PourAwayFluidArts

      We call it window film. It's used for privacy and should be available in some hardware stores. You can also search online for it or for diffraction grating or holographic film.

    • @PourAwayFluidArts

    • @PourAwayFluidArts
