Set this up a while back and it makes a massive difference! I wasn't rich enough back in the day for an mt32, so having this now makes up for it 😁 also sounds great with dune CD on dos with the mt32/CD audio combo.
Just got an MT32Pi today for my birthday and this video made setting it up so simple. Sounds great too. A friend of mine had a huge expensive MIDI keyboard back in the day which we'd plug into his 486 PC and enjoy the music on Doom, Day of the Tentacle and more so using this on AO486 (just for CANYON.MID right now until I can get some games on AO486) brings back so many great memories. X68000 also sounds pretty great too, just wish more devices supported MIDI 😀
Great stuff. Though I absolutely love FM synth, there's no denying the MT-32 and its brethern were and are amazing. I had no idea about the existance of the x68000 until the late 90s probably, but I was drooling over some PC magazines earlier in articles when the various Roland devices would come up.
The FM Synth is great but once I heard the MIDI I couldn’t go back. I never had MIDI back in the day...that was a luxury item. MIDI or a lot of brand new games with my Christmas and birthday money? No question...more games!
I’ve been considering building an mt-32pi since I always wanted to use an actual Roland MT32 back when I was a kid, but couldn’t afford one due to lack of funds. It’d be fun to dabble with it, and experience old games with the best sound device from that era.
Nice video, thankyou - it gives me something to point people to when they come to me with setup questions. Tiny super pedantic nitpick, at 5:55, you describe plugging the USB cable into the Pi HAT which is correct of course, but in the video show it being plugged into the Pi itself - for anyone reading this, make sure you plug it into the HAT. Otherwise, perfect! Keep it up :)
ahh...must have missed that! good catch. Plugging things in while monitoring the camera vs actually looking at the devices can be a real spatial awareness nightmare!
Thanks for the video. Last time I said I had ordered the parts to build one for myself. In the meantime everything has arrived and I build the Pi hat. I absolutely love it! I mostly use it for DOS (LucasArts and Sierra games) and it sounds so much better!
Lucas Arts games sound so good with Roland MIDI. It’s a night and day difference. The MT32pi is one of my favorite recent purchases. It’s just incredible that it’s running on the bare metal of the Raspberry Pi. Just a fantastic project all around and the developers deserve all the praise they get!
Yes it was a sorely needed device considering actual MIDI hardware has retained its value so well. This is a great and economical way to have MIDI hardware
You also can "upgrade" the mt32 Pi with a new DAC. The RasPi's DAC seems to be not so great. I just ordered the new DAC board to see if there is noticeable difference between both DAC's.
Finally getting around to doing this. Thankful I have some pis lying around because prices are silly rn. You ALWAYS say [insert game name] sounds spectacular, but this legit does.
Perfect timing, I just had my Raspberry Pi 3A+ delivered today and already have my MT32pi. Although that exact model isn’t necessary for the MT32pi, it seems the model 3A+ are somewhat hard to find in stock from official resellers. Some are out of stock until Spring 2022! 😮
You are simply the best! For a non computer person, I can follow your guides very easily! Thanks for making this tutorials for all MiSTer, I am so grateful for your superb work. Can I ask for a video on how to set up the MIDI settings on Daikamura, Final Fight and Super Street Fighter 2 as I cant make it work on the x68000. Thanks
Google those games. Each game has a unique key you need to hold down to get MIDI. I could do a video but it really wouldn’t be anything more “for midi on X, hold down THIS BUTTON” on boot. Glad you found it easy to follow. I have a lot of background in film and technology but I taught college film and tech stuff so I try to keep in mind what I know needs to be articulated in a way everyone can understand :)

This is one of the most exciting aspects of Mister. I'm curious if the X68000 core has full compatibility, save states, and if it works via VGA-component on a CRT. Also, one of my favorite MT-32 soundtracks is Gemini Wing on the X68000. Hold F1 as the game boots to enable Midi support. You'll get a graphic of Roland MIDI devices during boot if you enabled it. Thanks for the video.
Def not full compatibility yet and no save stages. Also analog out is limited as most of these games sync at 24khz or medium res. It's def still a beta core. It's so odd there is no "standard" way to enable MIDI in games either. Some have a menu when you launch a game, others require holding keys down. It is being recognized by the MiSTer and the logo displays briefly on the Pi hat's LCD display before changing to the "1 2 3 4 5 vol:100" display. I have it connected with 20cm JSER USB 3.0 Type A Male 90 Degree Left Angled to USB 3.0 A Type Right Angled to the MiSTer which is a dual RAM purchased from Ultima Mister, so it's not a cheap one from AliExpress. I tried it out with the current AmigaVison core. The M32-Pi submenu is displaying on the OSD with all of the options. When I enable it in the menu, I'm not hearing anything. I'm not seeing anything happening on the LCD display. The "1 2 3 4 5 " are all flat with no movement. I have all of the MT32 PI roms that were linked in the description the correct roms folder. I also disabled the low voltage warning in the txt doc on the root of the SD card. Any advice? Thank you!
Nostalgia is a funny thing. I spent a lot of time with SoundBlaster cards on PC so the MT-32 music with DOS games sound so wrong to me. It's the reason I've hesitated on picking up a MT-32 Pi kit. But on the flip side, I have no nostalgia for the Sharp X68000 so the MT-32 doesn't sound off to me. And at least for Castlevania, I think I'd say I prefer the MT-32 over the standard sound chip. @@VideoGameEsoterica Yeah on both sides, it's a big mess currently, package losses, taxes. I have a lot of nightmarish stories from a lof of friends, NOT good... XD
for some reason, shipping from the UK to continental Europe is taking forever these days. I don't know how it is the other way around but I wonder why. Ok, the UK has left the EU but there are literally less problems buying stuff from countries that have never been part of the EU to begin with. If you buy retrogames then it is a huge pain in the ass because a lot of listings are from the UK.
@@VideoGameEsoterica there is built in support in fact, but the HPS (ARM CPU) on the DE-10 Nano is not fast enough to run MUNT with full compatibility (so there will be slowdowns, especially in games like Monkey Island 2). Fluidsynth works fine though. It is highly recommended to use a MT32-PI which uses the Raspberry Pi CPU to render MUNT at full speed efficiently.
Haha that works too. I try to keep topics narrow and in this case that’s MT-32 Pi with the Roland MT-32 “sound”. Since other optics are “maybe it’ll work, maybe it won’t”, I try to keep those from tutorials as in my head the crowd that watches this doesn’t need details muddled with other items. No US sellers it seems. I even thought about ordering up some PCB’s and doing a small 20 piece run of finished units for sale in the community but I literally have zero time to build them
@@TomVanDeusen I can vouch for the UK seller. He had mine out the door and delivered to the states in almost no time!
@@Norweeg Thanks!! good to know!
What's the best place in Europe to buy a fully built MT32 or even just the hat, if you have any idea? And no Uk recommendation please... it's a nightmare currently to get anything from the UK. Anyway great video as always! I'm a ao486 enthousiast, I've been playing a lot of sierra games so this would be amazing I feel :D
Only place I know is FROM the UK sadly...I heard you've been having some weird tax/tariff issues eh?
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yeah on both sides, it's a big mess currently, package losses, taxes. I have a lot of nightmarish stories from a lof of friends, NOT good... XD
Bummer. Yeah unfortunately this came from the UK and it's the only vendor I know of. If I hear of another I will lyk.
for some reason, shipping from the UK to continental Europe is taking forever these days. I don't know how it is the other way around but I wonder why. Ok, the UK has left the EU but there are literally less problems buying stuff from countries that have never been part of the EU to begin with. If you buy retrogames then it is a huge pain in the ass because a lot of listings are from the UK.
that sucks. Its 2021...how can it be that hard?
Is there built in MT-32 support on the Mister? How does this compare?
There is not built in support. You need an external device
Yes so basically the answer is “nah, it doesn’t work” lol
@@VideoGameEsoterica More like; "It doesn't work with everything but it's an option nonetheless. Your mileage may vary" xD
The “power” MiSTer user who wants to play around with deeper alternatives probably doesn’t need any more help than being told it exists :)
I’d love to do more MIDI vids if the demand is there. I asked in the video if people wanted a full DOS tutorial but so far nothing to the affirmative
which x68000 core build is this? the jt51?
It’s a build from the Discord chat. I have to check the RBF file. I can’t remember the build name off the top of my head
Has anyone tried hooking up a midi keyboard to this setup?
Good question. No clue! I’ll check :)
No SC-55 support?
It can be added as a sound font. I wanted to focus on MT-32 here
😍
:)
I've enjoyed your videos for the most part, but dude... the backwards lame-O intro music has got to go. Surely someone can write you a proper retro-gaming-themed intro song?
lol I think you are missing the joke in it all. I chose that for a very particular "easter egg" reason
@@VideoGameEsoterica Mr Mister 😂 Well played
Haha yeah, some people discover it quickly, others don't notice at all. Just a dumb joke I couldn't help but make
@@VideoGameEsoterica I agree with Keith. I know what it is and it still annoys me every time I watch one of your videos. Maybe hire someone to make a cool tune for your intro or something. See @8-bit guy or @This does not compute for inspiration. Please don't take it wrong I appreciate your videos and just want to offer constructive feedback.
I def don’t want a jingle. I may change it in the future but who knows. But no jingles haha
