Ahahah B1M is forgiven ❤ …as all of us Nordic people look and sound the same to outsiders.
We’re basically the East Asians of white people.
I think our countries are each so individually insignificant and collectively homogenous that it’s not realistic to assume people will treat us as any other than a collective in their minds, if they even give us that much.
Our current national borders and separate national identities are all so arbitrary. We’ve been trading sovereignty of each other backwards and forwards through various “Kingdoms of X & Y” combinations for well over a thousand years. That we’ve landed as the current separate nations (…at least, for now) is mostly a fluke of timing. But the rest of the world wouldn’t notice or care if all or some of us joined together. Or split further. Or… whatever.
Bring an unlabelled world map when you go travelling internationally and ask locals that you meet if they can point out your country on the map. It’s an eye-opening experience. And I’m not talking about doing this in the third world either.
      anyway…

Beeing from Gothemburg this rebuilding phase do inpact the entire political landscape of the city.
Road tolls + new trains (västlänken) + a decade of construction + The skyscraper (karlatornet) + the cancelled idea of a cable railway over the river + the replacement of the old city bridge with 4 lanes + the now proposed tunnel under the river. I do love to see that they did correctly identify the shift from port city to more of a general industry hub.

While I have no technical skills or interest in the world of construction, I AM interested in design, architecture, industrial planning, commercial projects, development, etc.
You don't just show us construction projects, but you look at the ways in which construction intersects with other fields and the technology that enables these sorts of megaprojects. For example, I'm a keen follower of nuclear fusion development because of my physics studies, so it was great to watch your video on ITER! Thanks for making these videos so insightful and varied, yet captivating even for folks who have little to no experience in construction.

Gothenburg is definitely a rapidly growing city. I was there 3 years ago and so many new towers have popped up all over the city since then. Karlatornet, which is going to be 245 meters tall, will be the tallest skyscraper in Scandinavia. It looks very impressive already! However, there are also downsides to these rapid developments. It looks like the city is selling its soul to investors. Many newly constructed buildings really feel out of place and have very little respect for the surrounding areas. Scandic Gothenburg Central really is an eyesore. An ugly glass box that can't be unseen. The same counts for Hotel Draken, which is located next to the beautiful old parts of Haga. Hotel Draken and the surrounding newly constructed towers really don't fit there. Hotel Draken feels a bit like Gothenburg's own version of Tour Montparnasse. The city really needs to step up the game and focus building a coherent, good looking city. Some experts need to oversee all the big projects and make sure they fit in better. Quality over quantity. The same counts for newly constructed apartments, many of them look really bland and cheap. Gothenburg can do so much better, really! Don't get me wrong: I do love Gothenburg!

I agree, they're investing in the wrong things and destroying the city's soul to turn it into an "event" city with ego-driven projects. I laughed when the video called it a "sustainable" city. When so much is invested in industry, car infrastructure, glass buildings (the most unsustainable kind of buildings there is) etc, there is no sustainability in mind. Could do so much better indeed.

There is nothing wrong with spreading out as long as you have services and good transport infrastructure. Urban centres become satellite cities. Thank you for making a video about my city! Was so happy to see this :)
Surprised you didn’t mention the new train tunnel that will go below the city, as well as Karlatornet which will be the tallest building in Scandinavia.
A lot of your footage is outdated, most prominently the first few seconds where none of the new projects can be seen.
Felt more like a commercial for Skanska and Citygate... I hope you're coming back!

Grew up in Gothenburg. It was very cool to see this video and recognize landmarks from my childhood - Fiskekyrkan at 0:21, the Poseidon statue at 7:00-7:05, and Ullevi stadium behind the new building - and not transformed beyond recognition by skyscrapers and urban decay. But I do remember the insane scramble to move into an apartment that was large enough for two, and later three kids - from a studio apartment where my parents slept on a foldout couch in the living room and my sister and I shared a bunkbed in the hallway, to a 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom place near Avenyen and the old opera house. A great city for walking in.

It’s funny how this video focused on basically just Citygate which, even though it’s a cool project, doesn’t even count among the three most important developments in the city. He didn’t even mention Västlänken (commuter line being built cutting through the city center), Karlastaden (housing the tallest skyscraper in the nordics) or Masthuggskajen (reclamation project that will expand the city centre), all of which are far more ambitios projects.

Living in Gothenburg for 2 years and now moving to Oslo. Gothenburg is really an amazing city. It's so easy to reach the city center, transportation is really good ( its expensive). Only short bus ride to the lake and train to the beach. Also Slottskogen is amazing place to spend summer days or just having fun with friends. Amazing!

Not mentioned in the video: Gothenburg has become a giant car maze where every other road is blocked or limited to one direction. The slow flow and long lines of traffic with cars standing still, spewing exhaust fumes at idle in the centre should offset the sustainable strategy just fine.

    • @lsamoa

This. Everywhere in gothenburg the road infrastructure for anything other than public transport has been intentionally sabotaged causing huge traffic jams. For example many dual lane roads have gotten smaller with bus stops merging two lanes into one on many locations around the city "for pedestrian safety" instead of just setting up a traffic light
