I haven't seen the movie- but many nuns didn't go into a convent due to being devout. Most women (historically) did it to escape their lives, like queer women who would flee there to avoid getting married.
Thanks for the review! I read it as a dark serious film so I may avoid this one.
Most people I've seen have been comparing it to giallo? So if that's a genre you like, you may enjoy it more going in with that expectation 🤷♀️

I guess I had different expectations going in. I'm really not giving this film the benefit of the doubt hahaha. I felt for what the film was trying to accomplish, it gave me enough about her character (which admittedly is pretty much nothing, because I don't think it matters that much in a pulpy jumpscare fest like this) but I was not looking for anything meaningful re: themes on femininity, catholicism or religion and I don't think the film ever intended to deliver them. So if they spent any more time on her character I would have felt it was wasted, I mean, I already think they did a bit much because I don't see how her history tied into the plot as is. Overall kinda meh but entertaining enough as I was watching with friends.
That's probably the downside to my habit of going into films with little/no info....I place my own out-of-left-field expectations on the movie 😂
I haven't seen this myself yet, so can't comment, but I'm surprised to hear such a different take on it to the one I just watched by Mark Kermode: he seemed to love it, and thought that the political elements were very well represented. He doesn't usually go for surface level jump scare fodder either. I don't know what to do now haha, wait for it to stream free, or pay for a cinema trip. I guess I need to see some more reviews. Thanks for your take.
That's the nature of movie reviews, it's all just opinions 😅 I've heard a LOT of people comparing it to giallo - which has never been my thing - so that may be the reason I did t vibe with it as much 🤷♀️
@@NightmareMaven I took the plunge in the end, and risked a cinema trip. I thought the first third was competent, with the usual jump scares - certainly entertaining, but nothing special.
THEN this film changes direction, and oh wow, it becomes very powerful indeed, in my opinion!
The unforgettable ending (which is all in Sydney Sweeney's visceral portrayal, as opposed to any crazy gore, set piece, or special effect) aside, this one has some strong social commentary.
It's an absolute 'f- you' to the religious right in the US who are currently exercising legislative control over the bodies of women and girls...and the anger here is palpable.
A lot of the crap reviews are apparently coming from that quarter, unsurprisingly.
I really thought this would be your thing, but each to their own, of course, different strokes for different folks👍
Sydney Sweeny has got a lot going on at the moment I think I'll wait for this one to be available on home release.

Some of the new films including immaculate and others coming soon, will see half on VOD. Pros & Cons on this one have been almost even, but liked your POV. Just hope it did a twisty take with the plot, since there's plenty other related features that have been repetitive with their takes
