  • This video shows the efficiency and sustainability of a bottle tower garden. They can be installed against the wall of a house or along a hedge or a fence. The number of bottle towers has to be adapted for providing food security for the family all year long and year after year. It is a method applicable anywhere on earth, both in rural and in urban areas, e;g. on a balcony. It can be applied at the lowest cost to alleviate malnutrition and hunger.

Hello, I want to thank you for this video. I made a bottle garden this year and can't believe how successful it is! I Everything with the exception of a small amount of twine and wire is recycled. I started with a gazebo frame that someone had given me, and many 2 L bottles and pots. I live in BC Canada, and many people I know are going to do this too. We need to grow our own food, since we can not trust the people that produce our food for profit. I hurt my back a while ago, and am living on a very small income. This has been wonderful. Thanks again.

Imagine using plastic bottles that never decay in a landfill and using them as free planters to feed people. The man deserves an award. Thank you so much for such a well presented idea. I will use this for my small garden.

I agree. This is amazing. I have actually started, not this method, but I drink a lot of water and I keep the bottles and use them to plant my cucumbers, squash, beans and tomatoes in as a hanging basket on my porch.

All these methods are not sustainable because almost all plastic these days are made to biodegrade and that is what and why we should move away from using anything plastic. I wouldn’t have such an issue if plastics weren’t designed to leach out into food and water and more would recycle but those days are long gone.

thank you so much for sharing this video i believe your main purpose on this is recycling, space saving, decorative and a lot more good thing that i can see, and the fact that the spices and the leaves of the vegetables that people will put in their salads are really, really, really clean seeing that there will be no cats or dogs can walk through it..thank you again, Praise GOD for the knowledge and wisdom he had given you Dr.Cotthem.

This is a great recycling venture. Love it! For everyone who has issues with eating produce grown in plastic bottles (and given the treatments food undergoes to keep it fresh from farm to store, I feel that's just a little irrational - no matter how many 'studies' one chooses to read) you can always use this method to create a colourful flower garden in a small space! Think outside the box...

I've been researching tower gardens for a small commercial strawberry application for some time. There are plenty of better looking systems out there, but they all cost a LOT more. This system is simple, economical and it works. The one modification I am going to suggest is painting the bottles white to reduce heat in the soil before the leaves get big enough to shade the bottles. Other than that, I'm investing a lot of time and money into this very shortly - 4-6 weeks. I plan to use a 2x4x8 board, pressure treated, sunk about 3 feet into the ground and 2 towers of bottles on the pole with 5 or six plant spaces for strawberry plants. no or minimal weeding, easy to set up a timer on a drip irrigation system. Not going to do a you pick, everything will be me or staff. Yes it doesn't look as pretty as the commercial towers for $100 plus each, but this can be made under $5 a tower and from everything i see should work just as well. as for bottle degradation, i plan to replace the bottles in 3-4 years as the life of the plants die, so that's no big deal if they do deteriorate, if not i recycle them. I don't think they will, plastic pop bottles last 100s of years. it's the milk jugs that break down. THANK YOU for the video. I really appreciate it as there are very few other videos out there on tower pop bottle gardens. VERY IMPRESSED.

My hope is one day these plastic bottles (& other plastic) will no longer be manufactured, but this is a good idea to keep them out of landfills. It's great that you keep the roots in there to compost. That's a good move in all gardens. Great option for city dwellers, especially ones who could only grow on a porch or balcony.

    Great idea very innovative 👍
....To everyone arguing about plastic recycling and plastic toxins and blah blah blah... Making plastic is the real issue. These bottles will still end up in the trash eventually so that sucks no matter what, & trying to get as much positive secondhand use from plastics is great no matter what. So instead of wasting time bashing each other’s opinions we should be trying to end the making of more new plastics on our planet. We (the majority humans) choose to buy and use unrecycled plastics all the time right? ... most of us are watering our plants with a plastic hose myself included... just saying guys 🌎

Dear Willem, I read your blog article and was quite impressed by all the insightful comments about BPA leaching being more drastic at higher temperatures, how plants would theoretically not allow the BPA ions to get passed their cortex and how higher levels of microorganisms in the soil can chelate the BPA, lowering the amount that is free to be absorbed by plants.
But I am concerned regarding the opinion that low doses of BPA, or other hormone disrupting chemicals, makes it non-dangerous.

Thanks Mr. Van Cotthem, I love this idea and may try it. Your photo documentation is fabulous and I thank you for sharing it all. Like many out there, I have concerns about what I feed my family; and in the times we live in, it's hard to discern what's really safe anymore. Sometimes I walk into my local "health food store", Whole Foods, and see crowds of people paying for overpriced, non-organic, not fresh produce. So many are mislead by food labels that read "fresh" "natural" and "healthy" on the packaging, which is NOT regulated by the FDA in any way! (FDA only regulates what's printed in the Nutrition Facts box!) At least your way allows someone to use organic plants and soil and do better for ourselves than what will most likely available in any store. As for the plastics, well, it's all debatable. My young adult son does a lot of scientific research on plastics and is ok with my using #1 or #2 plastics around our home for various things. We certainly don't microwave food in any plastic container, and I'm slowly eliminating all plastic food containers from my home as my budget allows, but I think for this purpose the #2 plastic soda bottles would be just fine. Kudos to you!

We started with a mixture of local soil (dirt) and rich organic compost. Apparently, it sufficed for all the vegetables in our bottle towers. It is my experience that many gardeners over-fertilize in their garden, where a lot of fertilizer is lost by leaching. Underneath our bottle towers we collect the surplus of water (drainage of the bottom bottle) in a small cup. That collected water contains the leached fertilizer. Pouring this solution back on top is in fact recycling all fertilizers.

Views or facts aside. I've been watching a lot of the container gardening videos this spring for ideas for next year. All very good ideas, but ALL fail to show actual produce at the end of the season. Experiment or not, what did the celery look like when mature? I understand expanding for a family, not a problem. But please show me something PRODUCED. Not just pretty greens on a wall. I am not singling out your experiment. This is a problem I've had with all of these videos.

Thanks. I only mix some compost or manure to the local soil (dirt). I collect the surplus of water running through the tower and leaving the tower via two drainage holes in the bottom bottle. That water contains the nutrients leached in the different bottles. I collect it in a small yogurt pot underneath the tower. From time to time I empty the yogurt pot in the top bottle, thus recycling the nutrients.

Wow! this is just wonderful. One possible problem though, Plastics break down over time and can be slightly dangerous over a long period time. Take a few minutes and look into the info on plastic and how it breaks down. Still a beautiful idea. Maybe try glass bottles if you can figure out a way to cut them safely.

just had that "why didn't I think of that" moment that I'm sure is very common for people watching your videos. This is brilliant.
Wouldn't it be fun to set up something like this taking advantage of the natural spout design of the upside-down bottle, shunting it into a water conduit of some sort, then sending the runoff over to a swirl filter of some sort where you could then pull clean, nutrient-rich water to dump right back in to the top? It would cost a few feet of height, but that shouldn't be a huge problem. I am sure most gardeners are happy to have most of the deep bending down tasks relegated to short, less constant duties... I have a problem with the cochlea in my left ear that makes me highly susceptible to dizziness when bending down.
I'm trying to figure out a quick and easy way to build a simple reservoir and pump system. With a 1mm hole in those drip buckets, I'd be worried about clogs.
With a heavily stacked system, you could almost pre-charge the system with a load of water, wait a few minutes, then fill your water supply back up and it would water itself for a few cycles. Great for urbanites.
If only all those people sitting around on welfare could realize what they could be doing with all those Coke bottles, what that would mean for their diet, their energy, their food bills, their sense of accomplishment, their self-esteem, their...
My junkie sister has a boyfriend who loves to say he lives off the grid. The extent of his green thumbery involves growing pot and opium poppies because Welfare already pays for all his other drugs, food and rent. And constantly they complain about their hardships while she is 75lbs overweight, smokes a pack a day, drinks like a fish and chugs 3 protein shakes and 4 energy drinks every single day.
If they did this instead, they'd be slimmer, healthier and would have a daily routine (that didn't involve panhandling and dumpster diving) too!
