Given your appraisal, i'll probably buy it. I already use photography lights mounted on a microphone arm, so its actually probably cheaper than my current setup. I understand you did you best to argue that the "expensive" price is worth it, but to anyone who understands its capabilities and has need of them, its a bargain really. People who just dont want to paint in the dark wont be able to justify it and thats fine.
Thank you for making this video. I bought this light because of your video and further research.. I was going to film my own box opening, but I was too excited about seeing the light. For 10+ years I used expensive and high quality incandescent daylight lights. A few weeks ago, there was an issue where my fixture blew out two of the incandescent lights in a row and the company no longer makes the bulbs. I have been researching something equivalent because eventually these bulbs will run out. Up until recently, most LED light quality fell far short of my requirements. I spent a few days researching and reading (questionable) reviews because the quality of my studio light is so important to me. I create a wide variety of things and am also a painter. There are a lot of great things about this light. Everything is great about this light. The light quality is amazing. The colors are amazing. The quality of the fixture is amazing. The fixture unfolds to give you a huge amount of flexibility in where you want the light. You can get it high above your desk or very close with ease. It produces very little heat. The price was a bit painful but is well worth it. In a world where many businesses are racing to the bottom in quality, customer service, and craftsmanship, it is always a breath of fresh air to discover products like this. Filled with joy to have found this light. 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
It does sound expensive, however, just buying 2 high CRI led strips (97 plus) will cost you $100 plus. As an ex fashion photographer (decades ago) I understand how important high CRI is. It's a pity I missed the early bird offer. Looks like an excellent piece of kit if you can afford it.
Thanks for the Review mate. I have been umming and Ahhing over this thing for a while now, Being in Australia the thing is over $440 AU with a further $150 for freight, but now they have it in their Aussie Warehouse, with free shipping. Still a big ask at $440, but I spent more than that over the years on different lighting solutions that have always ended up being garbage. This was a great Review and gave me enough insight now to make a decision. I have been impressed with Redgrass and it's products so far.
I agree with everything you have said about this desk lamp. It is expensive however it does its job splendidly. I have just received mine and I am looking forward to using it on my modelling projects. I was also pleasantly surprised at receiving this lamp just three days after I ordered and purchased it and I live in Australia.
The irony with all of this is incandescent/Halogen bulbs have always had a perfect CRI. Obviously LED is better in so many ways, but it's a shame how long it's taken for LEDs to start to match the feel of an incandescent, not just the colour temperature. Hopefully as time goes on this CRI tech becomes the norm, and everything will be better for it.
Good review. I have genuinely learnt more about the light output of lamps now. It looks a nice bit of kit. Without the price though, it’s not really possible to decide if I want one or not. Will keep an eye out though
I´m in the kickstarter project . Im so excited to get this masterpiece. From year I use 2 flexo bulb lamps, this will replace it. It looks great. Only thing that worries me is reach my work area, I have a large table, but it is easy to solve. I´m in love for many redgrass products like the handle and membrane palete, they are my favourite. Thanks for showing.
Great video, I have ordered one and can’t wait. I spent hours trying to work out of it was worth it. The value is all in that incremental increase, for a CRI of 98, there’s nothing that can compete with this package.
Thanks for the detailed video! I have been eye balling this lamp for a while now. I picked up their wet pallet ks, and have been waiting to grab this one, but saw that price and was about to just write it off… I watched your video here and the explanation of the cri index and the r9 levels has been very informative! I am still getting my new more permanent space set up for myself and a good lamp is definitely on the list of needs. I may wait until after the ks (hopefully price doesn’t jump up 😬), but thanks for helping me see if this lamp is a good one for me or not!
so happy to have helped. I expected many would be upset at the price, but when you investigate it you can easily see it's value is worth more than what they are charging. Is it for you? well only the individual can answer that.
I make a desk lamp cost me almost nothing , I bought LED STRIP NATURAL white an in each row is two LED s , 170 cm , I had some scrap wood and assembled the long rod to the body of stand . It has no dimmer , and works with direct 220-240 v no adaptor . Use your imagination and use it , I also used a shackle and wire to hold the long rod . The future of desk lamps is LED
The problem with clamps is they don't fit many desks and tables. Their clamp looks far better than most of the designs I've seen, but it would still require printing some 3d parts to adapt it to either one of my two desks. The light looks great, but to be the ultimate solution it should have full spectrum color temperature like modern grow lights do or at the very least a changeable color temperature. But it's the best lamp I've seen around so far. The best features are the rotating lights and the high neck positioning, which to me is absolutely critical. But eck kickstarter. I don't pay for things unless they can ship immediately. It would be nice for the company to eventually produce a similar light with a magnifying lens that could pair with it easily, perhaps splitting the same power cord since extra outlets are not easy to come by. I'd like to know more about the wattage draw and the heat it produces. Looks like a good product overall. A smaller version with only one bar light would also be a nice option for guys on a lower budget.
Given your review I would buy, but I wonder if it is only suitable for miniature painting or also for other creative activities (like drawing, that i do)
This looks really interesting, thanks for providing the background technical info about light as well. I do have to ask though where you got the mini's featured in this (specifically the marines and the knight-like trooper. They look absolutely gorgeous!
@@FauxHammer Thank you. Exactly what I was looking for. I just took the plunge on resin printing (mars 3 pro, thanks for the great videos on printers) and the number of great models is overwhelming.
Quick question. When you use the dimming function, is the lamp generating a high frequency noise? I'm interested in this lamp, but from previous experience, similar lamps that had a dimming function, generated high frequency noise (probably from induction) when the dimming function was used. And this drove me crazy, because I work in a quiet environment. But I understand that not everybody can hear this, everybody's ears are different and some can hear it and some not. So I'm just curious.
Buy once cry once, some hobbyists will put all their money into models and skimp on all their tools. On a side note, I did order one as well as an upgrade from my V1 to a V2 pallet. :)
Post kickstarter will this be available as other RedGrass stuff is? RRP is to be more? The Kickstarter is going really well after only a few hours - I wonder if they would consider dropping the price for everyone given its looking good for mass volume savings...
Was 1min late for an Super Early bird. So the Ealry Bird as to do. I was looking for an light upgrade since i am starting to paint more and more and my 5€ IKEA 6000K bulb is just not making me happy anymore. Thanks for the Input cant wait to get mine.
Out of curiosity, why no mention of the BenQ e-Reading lamp? They've been heavily targeting a lot of creative people over the past two years, hence why I ask. They're decent lights with CRI 95, come with a weighted base (sadly no desk clamp in the box, and they don't even sell them in Canada for some silly reason).... And they're priced right around the same price as the Kickstarter pricing for the R9 Task Lamp. I actually like the principle and promises that the Red Grass Games one has, at least at Kickstarter pricing. Listed retail pricing for me feels a tad on the high side when lights that are currently on the market (that receive a lot of flak about being overpriced) will be noticeably cheaper (at current mid-market rates, the listed retail price of the R9 Task Lamp is $413 CAD... Versus $320 for the BenQ). Questions that come to mind that RGG hasn't answered on their Kickstarter... - If you set a brightness and then turn the light off, does it return to the previously set brightness? - does it turn itself on automatically when it gets power? The BenQ frustratingly does this after the power comes back from a building power loss, and has it at max brightness 5700K, which is rather frustrating.
Sorry, I've never heard of it before. but to answer you questions 1. yes it remembers it's last brightness. 2. no it does not come on when power comes on.
@@FauxHammer No worries at all. It seems despite their strong push to make it well known (almost as if it's original target demographic didn't quite pan out as much as they had hoped :P) it's something that isn't all that well known - I only found out because their marketing department started working with a few large gunpla and scale model brands in 2020-2021, and then slowly started moving into the miniature painting world as well. I've rather enjoyed the two I've had for almost two years now, but investing in a quality light is always a good thing, so it's nice to see more high quality task lamps with wide are lighting, as it means fewer have to look into studio lighting, and all the extra associated costs, time, and space involved with such (I mention space because most can't leave multiple c-stands and lights with diffusion domes set up 24/7 due to just how much space they take up). Definitely glad to hear it remembers the brightness, and remains off if there's a power outage. That last one is a rather wise feature - we're literally planning on buying a UPS for our current BenQ lights to combat this, as well as be able to go "welp, power's out, but I can still paint"
So...the real question on everyone's mind, will RG finally move past kickstarter phase or let it sit there for 5 years? Also, I have a feeling since tbey are milking this thatt there is zero chance they will lower the price but instead price gouge us even further, love the review on this lamp but very disappointed in RG.
I don’t like this style of task light. I don’t have a problem with the price and high CRI is nice. But I prefer ring style task lights. When working on detail work for whatever reason.
I’ve seen free standing bases that my buddies tried who are tat artists they end up top too heavy and fall constantly they always end up wall mounting them as do to biohazard prevention they don’t attach to their station desks
You may want to give this lamp a 5 star rating and then when you factor in the value move it to a 1 star rating, but you can't deny what they've done here. It is a work of art.
