Perfect timing for this video! Especially with LTT coming out with their Plex video
The production quality of your videos are amazing. You def deserve way more subs! Thanks for this quality free content!
How timely! I just finished setting up pi-kvm with an aimos kvm switch, great piece of software!!
love the pikvm. Made it real easy to manage the server remote.
I actually disabled hardware transcoding as I never have more than two 1080p streams at once and it's mostly a straight stream.
This makes it much easier to migrate my Plex VM around as it no longer relies on hardware passthrough. :)
Short and precise! thank you so much!
another solution is to possibly provide the additional Episode content using a merge episode plugin and having the 720 - 1080 - 4k files select-able minimizing trans-coding required. its a lot of extra files but if you want to minimize the trans-coding that could be an option. absolutely love the content here as I have an old 8700k cpu and motherboard that i could put to use till i get a proper low power setup.
I've bought an AM4 based server motherboard along with a 5950x so if I ever do want hardware decoding I was always going to have to go with a dedicated GPU. Definitely something to be mindful of though.
You know exactly what I want to watch! Danke
Saved my life probably. I just bought a supermicro with an IPMI. Read the bios manual, and found the onboard / external vga option. Searched the motherboard model on reddit and found many people unable to enable quicksync. None of them suggested setting vga to external in the bios.
LOL... I thought I had hit the jackpot when I found this board on Ebay for $100... glad I watch wolfgangs channel!!!!
Quadro P2200, using it for both Plex and Jellyfin. They both work great.
I have an Asrock - e3c246d4u motherboard with IPMI, to enable hardware acceleration I have to use a secret BIOS menu (ctrl+alt+F3 while booting) and enable multi-monitor to have the Quicksync working in Jellyfin. FYI
Haven't tried this on my server yet, but I had issues with the IPMI on my X570D4U that seems to come from the same problem. When the iGPU is activated, the KVM does not output video. Luckily I can do without hardware encoding
On ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. P9D-I Series (motherboard) you can disable (literally turn off) both: on-board graphics card and iKVM module. It does not change anything. The built-in processor graphics module (some kind of HD Graphics, depending on the exact processor model) stays *disabled* and *undetected* anyway.
Great info as always
What model MB? I'm thinking of building a NAS with Unraid but don't need video decoding etc just a file server.
Thanks for this video. In the case the error is allready done, what graphic card could be good for Plex and frigate ?
Nice tip, this is something I wasn't aware of! Btw have you considered getting a cheap gpu for decoding?
I have, but it won't be worth it for me due to increased power consumption
I never heard, that you could use a HDMI capture card, as transcoder for the RPI. But i can't find any video or online guides, on the subject.
a great tip you should know when building a new server
Could a bios update fix your main board? (If they added feature) Or is the better option just the KVM, which also could be acting boot device?
It might help, but this could also be a hardware limitation. Either way, this motherboard is 5+ years old at this point, and it's very unlikely that ASUS will release a BIOS update for it
@Wolfgang's Channel - Have you got a neat solution for connecting to your jellyfin server without a (static) IPv4 and only a dynamous IPv6 address? With neat i am thinking about using a Fire TV Stick Jellyfin App without modifying the Fire TV Stick. Just make it accessible for everyone who wants it (and got the connect data and a account to log in to it).
Look into dynamic dns. That should fix your problem, if I understand your needs correctly. There are even free ddns services. You'll tie your IP address to the domain name and configure it so it updates every time your IP changes.
Can i add network mounted storages to Jellyfin??
how do you know if the motherboard is compatible? I looked at a supermicro motherboard and it does have IPMI but doesnt say anything about being available in BIOS to disable or enable in the manual.
Ask Supermicro
are there any x86 alternatives for pi-kvm

what do you think about intel T series and amd GE series desktop CPUs with 35w TDP? are they too weak for a media server?
Definitely not, especially if you mostly decode 1080p footage. The newer Intel GPUs are really strong for HW video decoding, so I definitely would consider going for T or GE CPUs if power efficiency is a priority
@@WolfgangsChannel thank you so much :-)
LOL. @1:18 Arch BTW "edition"
Decoding should be done on client side, download footage in h.264, disable server side conversion.
That's really not a valid solution. I have some ripped Blu-ray disks on my Plex server, that are original size, and I don't want to re-encode them. It's not really a problem for me, as my TV can play almost any media directly. But my youngest son sits in a city far away, and only has a crappy TV. It can't play the videos on my Plex server, and my server is just a RPI4.
Although a browser does have some hardware capabilities, a browser can also not play any file directly, in any case. Not even the official Plex app for Windows has hardware decoding.
can you please make a tutorial on setting up your piKVM?
Hallo tolles video
Eigentlich ziemlich Plug and Play.
There is also one another option, using intel vpro features with intel Q series chipsets.
My plex server lives on a QNAP device with a weak Celeron. So transcoding sucks anyway. I used a docker instance of tdarr and converted all my media to a format that can direct play to all my clients.
I'm on an AsRock Rack X570D4i-2T so I'm out of luck anyways (no iGPU on my R5 3600), but good video!
Thanks.
Someone mentioned this issue on HN the other week, does your board have a jumper anywhere to disable the IPMI graphics chip? Apparently its not always a BIOS option. Edit: Just pulled the manual for your board up, check jumper VGA_SW1 behind the VGA port.
It depends on the chipset used. There are server motherboard with Aspeed controller + iGPU. An example that comes to mind: asrock e3c226, vs asrock e3c224
I would LOVE to see a video on how to use a Raspberry PI as a remote KVM for a home server! I've got a Chinese X99 board that 100% fit my needs, but no iLO/iDRAC style remote management interface. BUT! I do have two Raspberry PI's laying around.
I wish Jellyfin was in the Raspberry Pi OS repos :(
Brah just use the cockpit panel and shell. Install casa OS on top if you're really not into using the shell.
What was this matherboard on end of video? 8 sata port!! ME LIKE IT!! 😀
Asrock C236 WSI
After trying jellyfin, Plex and what not...finally just settled for Kodi nerds to play off my 5TB USB drive I hooked up to routers USB. Plays 60 gig Blu days just fine over the 5ghz!
5tb usb stick? Like a usb thumb drive and not a HDD? 5TB usb thumb drives are fake, sorry
@@haxboi5492 dude USB Drive not stick. I have Seagate OneTouch 5tb
The only problem is it's impossible rn to find any Pis at reasonable prices, even Zero 2W costs $100-200 - insane!
for me the most hated function of plex is transcoding. there should be an option to force direct play or not do not play the content at all. when watching something halfway trough i realize its transcoding and have to cancel watching and search for a version supported without transcoding.
You know it has been an option for like 2 years now I think? In server's transcoding menu you click "Disable transcoding" or something like that and won't ever transcode. That's how my Pi allows me to stream 4k hevc videos to LG and Samsung TVs. I also use Emby but I tried Plex and it did work just like it should have. On a browser it said that server has no stream when I tried playing 4k video.
@@TheHugePotato i did not know, found it, saved my day, thanks a lot
Did he compare iLO 2 with a Raspberry Pi 4?
The current iLO version is 5
When it comes to home servers, people mostly use old used enterprise hardware. A friend of mine has an old HP server at home with iLO2, so that’s the point of comparison. But I’ve seen people reporting power draw as high as 20W (with the server itself turned off) with newer HP machines
@@WolfgangsChannel The one server with iLO 2 (that’s still alive at work) can’t even be accessed using modern browsers. (It’s not supporting the current HTTPS ciphers)
That’s why I’m asking 😉
Didn't know it was that old 😟
1:16 haha
u're like Jeef Geerling but on minimals
is it illegal to use jellyfin in the usa?
No
@@WolfgangsChannel thank you sir :)
Arch btw gets you a like from me !
Чорт, я думал ты предложишь какое то невероятное решение проблемы и покажкешь, как ты несколько дней искал решение. Я уже пельмени поставил вариться)
I made a jellyfin server 1 month ago... fuck
I'm just using a intel nuc tho
Video encoding/decoding should be left to another box that specializes in that purpose. I use a gaming rig which tears through video codecs as my Plex server and expose the media libraries to it. The NAS is for storage and should specialize in storage.
I just use an old GPU in my fankenNAS made from new HDDs and old gaming PC parts from two different computers. 🧟♂
Disagree. You use a NAS to put EVERYTHING on it, like terabytes and terabytes of data. Then if you need to stream videos out to a device that doesn't support the source format you can do encode on the NAS server while streaming the output to the user. This works great. You COULD transcode literally everything before-hand, but what if the format is only needed for Timmy who watches on his phone, and the source format works well for everything else? That's a lot of effort transcoding every single file before-hand for Timmy when he's only going to watch two episodes of a show and stop. Its also a Lot of time, and space being wasted on the server.
Yeah my Xbox one s seems to play nearly everything direct play
iac video part 2 when?
First comment nice video bro
10 W vs 4 W is not gonna break the bank - you can always unplug the server when not in use.
Actually I found that very impressive for the RPI. A major downside of my server mobo
I don’t se the point of buying a more expensive IPMI motherboard if you physically have to unplug and plug it in again when you need it.
I measured my server shut down with IPMI running, it used 6-7W.
on god this guy looks like that kid from polar express xD
Good luck finding a Pi for sale though
yeos
Lol arch "by the way"
All I do is direct play/stream..
Nah, it's $450 and it's out of stock here in US, I'll keep my poor weak ds220 lol
33 mhz
God dammit, youre too late xD
bruh building a nas or server is so damn confusing way more info then just building a regular pc ugh.
Почему мне кажется, что он русский?
too bad the server wont fit a good video card in it, and there are no extra power connectors for the video card. Only a cheesy half assed video card will work. Plex and Jellyfin are best run from a powerful desktop pc.
That’s only true for off-the-shelf servers. When you go DIY, you can go for a tall 4U rack case or a desktop case, and fit any PSU and graphics card that your heart desires. How do you think bitcoin miners do?
Quadro P2000.
Haha, I hate the stupid ilo video card complete trash.
Nobody needs this, software encoding is fine. In fact, don't transcode just watch the source file directly
Well most integrated graphics on server mobo are trash so who cares.
Not really true - QuickSync (especially with newer Intel CPUs) is really good for video decoding/encoding
@@WolfgangsChannel No, I think he really meant Aspeed graphic onboard chips are trash badly which can be found on the most server motherboards, not Intel iGPUs.
If you want ipmi kvm then it’s useful.
