Look at Jerry at 1:35 after Brent sings his part at 1:24. Jerry is so proud of Brent and the entire band. He throws his arm up in the air, starts dancing. He can barely contain his pride of the music they are creating. For some reason this makes me happy.
Nice catch, Ted. I agree 1000%. I have a button on my dvd player that goes back 5 seconds if you tap it once. So, I loop it and just watch the joy in Jerry and the great new confidence in Brent. I was at this show, too!
I can't say exactly why, but this has become my favorite Grateful Dead track in the whole wide world. I usually start my day before sunrise, boogie-ing to this song with the headphones on while everyone else is asleep.
Hey this is a song originally from my country Trinidad and Tobago, I discovered this today! Giving me more respect for this jam band! I used their song Touch of Grey for my first concert in 2018 as the theme song, the band is not very popular in my country , jus a handful of us know about them.
Good ol 'Grateful Dead-you either got em or you didn't."Man Smart (Woman Smarter)" is a calypso song whose composition is credited variously to King Radio (Norman Span), D. L. Miller, F. Kuhn, and Charles Harris. The song has also appeared on the 1957 episode of I Love Lucy entitled "Ragtime Band." It is sung by Desi Arnaz, Lucille Ball, William Frawley and Vivian Vance.I just heard Iko,Iko on my Ipod and, since it has the same beat as this, thought of it.I've seen the Dead do this many times.Brett Mydland[R.I.P.],on the keyboards,is on fire!!The way they finish it here is as good as it gets
"tippimail1, "You either got em or you didn't." So true. I don't know much about music but I love them. It just seems like every note is in the right place.
tippimail1 one other note of interest - the instrument that Lucy plays in that clip is a cuica drum - probably most famously heard in the1962 Quincy Jones song ‘Soul Bossa Nova’ and known to most folks currently as the intro song to Austin Powers, International Man of Mystery. Funny how all things are connected in the end.....
I was there . Best time of my life .left the concert with a thousand stickers on my body with nothing but love all over me .danno Buffalo NY Love's the dead
After Brent's death, Jerry kind of went thru the motions until his death, never quite as happy playing. Imagine had Brent not killed himself with a speedball.
exactly. brent kept jerry alive through the 80s. after he passed jerry was a little lackluster most of the time. not to say there weren't some good jams in the 90s but not like it used to be.
They say that Brent was going through a divorce that he didn't want, as the tour was ending & his attempts at reconciliation had failed... So he ended his life, sadly & much to the chagrin of so many who fell in love with his vibe in the GratefulDead. I saw his last show, it seemed he knew it was his last show...he shined! Such a performance, they did one hell of a "the Weight" that night. Much love to Brent! Gone but nvr forgotten! Thanx for the music my brother!
In my teens n twenties i was all about the 70s years especially 73 74 n 77 but the last few yrs,as i get older n wiser!, the brent years are now without question my favorite era...brent brought so much to the table wirh his voice n his playing buti think him joining also rejuvenated the entire band....god bless the grateful dead...#brentyears
You do know that Brent never sang Baba O'Riley with the Grateful Dead, right? I mean he died in July of 1990. They didn't add it to the rotation until '92.... with Vince on vocals.
There used to be a clearer, full frame version of this on UA-cam, but for some reason it got pulled. I should have downloaded it, but didn't think of it until it was gone. At least the music' there.
does it matter love around 2.12 Jerry and brent just enjoying the show, This is Iko, Iko done over , still good , if you have not gone to see them you missed out live on Jerry years later I am still checking it out, be good all , best band ever I will argrue that forever
I am fairly confident - not 100%, but moving in that direction - that this was Oakland, the Coliseum, and I believe the year was 1987. As I said, strongly confident, but not totally certain. I have a beloved audio of this (a beloved song) and the guitar play, the points of articulation and emphasis, match up exactly. Hope this helps.
I agree that this is 1989. You can tell by Jerry's hair in a pony tail, Brent's beard, and Jerry's joyous demeanor. Compare to any of the large number of great 1989 shows you can watch on youtube.
Songs like this one are part of the reason I love this band!! I was just playing online blitz chess. When I play, often songs go through my mind. I was thinking of this song, actually the Harry Belefonte version, and I started winning. I'm going to tell my mom and sister, give them a laugh!
GREATFULGEM; God love Brent, Thank you so much for this upload, what a wonderful representation of perfection, Hands down the best time they ever played.it, or the best on record(:
Look at Jerry at 1:35 after Brent sings his part at 1:24. Jerry is so proud of Brent and the entire band. He throws his arm up in the air, starts dancing. He can barely contain his pride of the music they are creating. For some reason this makes me happy.
it's one of my very favourite moments. Jerry's so stoked by how awesome Brent was!
Nice catch, Ted. I agree 1000%. I have a button on my dvd player that goes back 5 seconds if you tap it once. So, I loop it and just watch the joy in Jerry and the great new confidence in Brent. I was at this show, too!
Renee Houston-Lang It's corny, but emotional. I watch it over and over again too.
Not to rain on a parade, but it kinda looked to me like he was simply pushing up his glasses ;)
+Jonathan Berman you coulda eaten Lucy, instead of ludes...;)

TY! Youngsters dont even realize the Beatles Ob la di, ob-la-da was Reggae!
Brent was that missing piece of magic in any band
Goddamn, I miss going to Dead shows. Some of my favorite moments.
Goddamn I love Brent's voice!
Me, too. He sounds like that guy from the Budweiser ads.
his voice brings a tear😪
I keep coming back to this video...one of my favourite Jerry - Brent interactions!
I was there . Best time of my life .left the concert with a thousand stickers on my body with nothing but love all over me .danno Buffalo NY Love's the dead
BRENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After Brent's death, Jerry kind of went thru the motions until his death, never quite as happy playing. Imagine had Brent not killed himself with a speedball.
I say the same thing
exactly. brent kept jerry alive through the 80s. after he passed jerry was a little lackluster most of the time. not to say there weren't some good jams in the 90s but not like it used to be.
He was lost, devastated, whatever adjective u chose.. he was never the same

phi1618ify Fuck’n a
Very cool version of this hit!! I only knew Harry Belafonte's version so far. Thanks!!
Easily the best performance of this song. Incredible solos from Jerry and Brent.
I think Brent was the best singer to ever be a member of the Dead.....
well that is just dumb
Doc Sierra definitely for people with an affinity for classic rock as opposed to the folk
pigpen was their singer.
Jerry even said he's the only one in the band with a voice amazing
Brent was a genius. Talent like crazy.
My mom took me to the 3 day concert in Boulder CO in the 90's. such an amazing vibe. Miss you papa Jerry!!
Your mom must be super cool.
Brent's falsetto singing during the last 15 to 20 seconds is 'effing AWESOME.
Hmmm. Published one day before my 56th birthday. Message of the song is still true. Huuuh!
My dad is a dead head and that is why I loooooooovvvvvvvvweeeeeeee the Grateful Dead and I just loooooooovvvvvvvvveeeeeeee this song
Emelia Leshko Your Dad is Smart, but Mom is Smarter!
ha me too
This performance is from a DVD "Truckin Up To Buffalo", and the whole DVD is this good! Excellent performance of "Terrapin". That's right!
Steve Lippe I was at this show. The energy was amazing. Definitely one of the best shows of this period.
7-4-89 Orchard Park, I think. You can get the Truckin up to Buffalo DVD. It's SWEET !!!
Also if anyone has amazon prime it can be streamed
Damn that was good!!
What ding-dongs could dislike this? This is like going to church for a Brent Head. You fools have no clue.....
My favorite Brent songs are Blow Away, his version of Baba O'Reilly, Dear Mr Fantasy.....
You do know that Brent never sang Baba O'Riley with the Grateful Dead, right? I mean he died in July of 1990. They didn't add it to the rotation until '92.... with Vince on vocals.
Yes, I know. Bad wording on my part.
I was at Cal Expo in Sacramento the first time he sang it with the Dead.....
Doc Sierra Cal Expo was a very perfect venue
San Jose, Spartan Stadium was Brent's Debutante Ball, if I am not mistaken. What a great show, almost rained but "Looks Like Rain" chased it away.
nice catch adam. so many tards think they know their shit about the dead. not saying i do, but i dont act like i do.
damn, brent is killing it...
There used to be a clearer, full frame version of this on UA-cam, but for some reason it got pulled. I should have downloaded it, but didn't think of it until it was gone. At least the music' there.
I know what you are talking about. It was pulled for some reason, and I have never been able to find it again.
It's here! Search & ye shall (sometimes) find: ua-cam.com/video/RiiQzxD1ma0/v-deo.html
Bobby has the best legs...... ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Pamela DePaulo , he was hot. Now he’s an old man and I’m an old woman. Sigh. But in my heart we’re both still young!
Brent was great. He gave us so much of his great talent. May he Rest In Peace.
Happy Birthday Brent!
Getting my Brent fix man
Thanks! Jerry loves it when Brent does that verse! His little Jerry dance is great!
As a man I'm not proud to say it but the woman are smarter. They say haha happy travels my friends be kind
The magic lives! Only if it's for a short moment.
the moment is forever!!!
I sure am glad there are videos. All of my Grateful Dead albums were stolen in 1972.
can someone name this show for me?
Elisabeth, you have some good videos posted. Snookie flowers got a great video of throwing stones and not fade away.
Snookie Flowers is a friend of mine! :)
brent definitely had such a great voice
Love this version. Thanks!
does it matter love around 2.12 Jerry and brent just enjoying the show, This is Iko, Iko done over , still good , if you have not gone to see them you missed out live on Jerry years later I am still checking it out, be good all , best band ever I will argrue that forever
+Jay Kneissler - TRUTH... toured from age 16 until the end.. more shows each year .. 1988-95...
+Jay Kneissler he was da Bomb
+Jay Kneissler It turned in an Iko jam a few times, I'm thinkin' an Irvine show in the 80s and certainly Jerry Band at the Wiltern.

Man. I miss the fat man and Brent together.. 89 was the best they ever sounded
Great tour... Summer 89 loved by many a head!!!!

That's RIGHT Woman ARE SMARTER!!!! JERRY KNOWS!!
This is the best ever Brent performance, the second being Mr. Fantasy at the Copps 3-22-90.

Talkin bout hey now,
Hey Now, Iko Iko..........uh, what? wrong song? sorry.
I agree that this is 1989. You can tell by Jerry's hair in a pony tail, Brent's beard, and Jerry's joyous demeanor. Compare to any of the large number of great 1989 shows you can watch on youtube.
+Kyle Roth Yep. Compare the rugs on the stage to the rugs on stage at the Meadowlands in '89. Great year to be a Dead fan.
miss ya into akio akio ,but love u always and forever
ive been looking for this version where Brent does his vers. Thanks soo much for the post!
Sure which Brent and Jerry where still around
I don't really believe this song, but I always sing it loud. I'm 67 and I hope to get laid again sometime.
The sound is pretty good on this video ! That's Right the Women are SMARTER in every way ! !
Who is the bass player? Gets little exposure, yet if you took him away, the whole thing would fall flat on its face.
Elisabeth, how but we go to a concert together?
Truckin up to Buffalo?
yes itis. have the DVD
Songs like this one are part of the reason I love this band!! I was just playing online blitz chess. When I play, often songs go through my mind. I was thinking of this song, actually the Harry Belefonte version, and I started winning. I'm going to tell my mom and sister, give them a laugh!
Jerry = Imrovisational Wizard
Listening to Jerry play guitar soothes my soul..
Opinions on whether Jerry was adjusting his classes or doing a little boogie that starts with his arm going up in the air at 1:35?? ✌
+lisa c I call that a Boogie, Jerry is gettin' down!
I was thinking the same ✌
Dance caused him to adjust his glasses.
You know my answer.
Nope, that's an eye-glass adjustment. However, just three seconds later, he comes PERILOUSLY close to actual dancing ...
The best version of this song ever. Top ten of greatest songs ever heard no doubt.
💙💙💙love grateful dead i miss them..miss watching ratdog💖
As good as it gets!
He is killing it , the band , I wasn’t there , at that moment , but 60 years this music isn’t anything but the best

+ryan layton yup fantastic album!
Wow! Thanks for posting this!
iko iko with different lyrics.
So true, dat.
Jazzy Jeff yeah, they're both island songs
this is a traditional Island song, recorded by Harry Bellafonte back in the 50s, and originated back in the 30's, I think.
I'm cool with it.
It was also featured in an "I Love Lucy" episode.
why did you finish it? it doesn't need to be
❤ Brent!
i miss brent..
Brent and Jerry at their best.
