  • We are in Port Clinton, where we see Reading, Blue Mountain, & Northern Train PNJT, the freight from Port Clinton to Jim Thorpe, as the two lead engine in the consist get started. First, we see SD38 2004 get started, followed by SD40-2 3055. The third engine, Lehigh Gorge SD50 426, is already up and running. In the next video, we'll see the train depart. Enjoy the sound of the 645's as they start up. If you have any questions about the video, feel free to message me. Comments are welcome. The videos were taken on August 25th, 2014.

I like how this video gives a back-to-back comparison of a roots-blown 645 to a turbocharged 645. I somewhat prefer the moan of the roots-blown engines to the whine of the turbocharged ones, but they both sound great.

Same. that high pitch *ying-ying-ying-ying-ying-ying-ying* isn't my preference either. Even though the turbo unit is, technically, a bit better.

@@acts2211 Read my description of the sounds that the two engines make and look up the locomotive designations in the video description and figure it out.

@@acts2211 The one they start up right at the beginning is the roots blown one. The one they pull away and then the second one they start up are both turbocharged. I've always really liked the low frequency rumble of the turbocharged units when they're at about notch 3.

the cylinders have a manual depressor knob??? i saw the mechanic turning a knob per cylinder.

Each cylinder has a "cylinder test valve". If the engine has been sitting for a while or has been worked on, all the valves are opened and the engine is turned over prior to starting. Fuel and/or coolant leaks can be detected by seeing discharge from the valves. If it looks clear all the valves are tightened and the engine is started.

They are the engine test cocks, and the procedure is if the engine is cold, we open them and rotate the engine until the cylinders clear to allow any liquids in the cylinder (fuel, oil, coolant, or water from hot air condensing in the cylinder as it cools) to vent out and prevent a hydro lock situation which can bend the connecting rod.

The SD38 is A Former DT&I Engine From Flat Rock Michigan. SAD to Say But The Railroad was Bought by The GTW and Totally Destroyed The DT&I. BUT The GTW got Bit Back The CN Took control of the GTW who Then DESTROYED The GTW Karma is a Bitch.
