Phenomenal match. I remember watching it live vividly. Such a shame that she pulled up injured in the semis. Really feel like of all the close calls she had in slams in the second part of her career that this is the one that got away.
Yes, shame she couldn’t admit her injury beforehand and let Venus advance who could have actually played and entertained fans. But, had Lindsey done that, then the fans would have thought Lindsey’s father told her to let Venus win…oh wait no that only happens with rich white crowds and a Black American winning…
Lindsay got injured in the semis after she beat Venus. She injured her groin and could barely run in the 3rd set against Kuznetsova. It would have made no sense to pull out against Venus since she wasn't hurt in this match.
Lindsey Davenport has 3 grand slams, while Venus has 7. Venus has made a much greater contribution to the sport of tennis than Lindsey ever has. Stop hating
I remember people writing off Venus Williams at this point because her last GS title was 2001 US Open. To think that Venus was only 24 here and people were talking about her as if she were 41
She went from winning around 6+ titles a year in 1999-2003 to winning nothing in 2004 and not getting past the QF a major, including early losses at the Aus Open and Wimbledon. It was understandable. I remember at the beginning of 2005 people were asking if the Williams sisters were “finished”, and one tennis analyst said in a magazine, “I think Venus is”. They both won majors in 2005, then each had a bad 2006, and both got their act together starting 2007, though Venus would never become the 5+ titles a year player she used to be.
@@Ttjam1 She won the 2004 Family Circle Cup as well as 2 more titles on clay that season. At one point she was the favorite for The French Open till rolling her ankle.
She won two clay court titles that year and two in total. She didn’t win more than 3 titles in a year after 2002. 1999-2002 it was 6+ a year. Her level was clearly higher before the 2003 abdominal injury. Venus was one of the best at masking injuries, being so stoic. After 2003 there was just always something on her mind mentally or physically so she couldn’t give the concentration and confidence she had in that earlier period.
Davenport I think was the best ball striker of all time, she was 6'4 and struggled to get around as good as the other ladies but her clean shots and power is devastating! Such a weapon!
Venus had a lot of confidence issues after her abdominal injury and her game was less fluent than before. Handshake in the end was weird. Davenport really deserverd a Slam in 2004 and 2005.

@; Venus usually lost to Davenport prior to 2000 but between 2000 - 2003 I think she lost to her once. The abdominal injury just changed her game and confidence. Sure Davenport was a great player. As 7 Slams don't do Venus' talent justice, 3 don't do Davenport's talent justice. And when Venus was younger she could have some not too nice handshakes but after 1999 she was always friendly in my opinion. Prior to this match Venus and Davenport had good exchanges at the net in 2004. Maybe that's why I find this colder handshake a bit weird.
@@ayoayo7730 Yes, Venus definitely started making more unforced errors when she returned to the game in 2004. That shot was brilliant. I love both their groundstokes..just phenomenal hitting.
No one hit a ball as heavy as Lindsay; not then, not now. She didn't do any jumping, exaggerated swings, or primal screaming to generate that tremendous power... body turn, planted feet, short backswing and good follow through, and very firm wrists is all you need to hit the ball solidly. She hit hard, flat, and deep all of the time. There was no such thing as a neutral shot coming off her racquet. Tremendous first serve and didn't even bother moving for shots she thought she couldn't track down. There was no wasted energy in Lindsay's game. She was the only player who could overpower the Williams sisters, and that's saying a lot.
