Back Pain: Tight Psoas and Lateral Stability

  • Feeling like you have tight hips, or to be more precise, one tight hip is a common issue associated with lower back pain.
    Clients often complain of feeling like one psoas is tighter than the other...but why? Often the underlying cause is a lack of lateral stability on that side.
    We can easily test by using a side-plank position, with the goal of getting to 60 seconds comfortably on both sides. If we fail, especially if we have more than a 10 second difference between the sides, lateral stability must be strengthened.
    This could mean starting at level 1 McGill style side-bridges and building from there.

    This is one of the few videos that hits the nail on the head. I have had psoas tightness for so long on one side, turns out I tore my external oblique near the pubic bone on that same side. My only issue is I feel the ql kick on pretty strongly when doing side planks. Will that go away once the obliques are a stronger?
