  • As we edge closer to the festive season, many of us will reminisce of how Christmas used to be in years gone by, from family traditions to the presents we bought and the shops we visited to get them.
If you're from certain generations who grew up in the city, you'll likely have visited the landmark that was Lewis's through the years - and more specifically ahead of Christmas. Lewis's was based on the corner of Renshaw Street and Ranleigh Street and from 1856 to 2010 it was the flagship store of the Lewis’s empire.
The Grade II listed building was built to replace the previous store, which was largely destroyed by the Luftwaffe's bombs during World War Two. Generations of Merseysiders shopped and worked there and many will remember everything from its perfume counters, to its food halls and getting a photo at the festive grotto, which was a must visit for families every year.

Remember the shop that sold odd bits on the top floor? It was small but sold everything from ham to peanuts to cheese.
