If you’re in a black/green deck, then Urborg Repossession is a great card. Gets you back a creature and any permanent, then randomly gains you life. Great budget card as well, it’s 5 cents
I think Noxious Revival is a great card at all levels. Even a lower casual levels, oops my bomb got countered or milled, gonna get it back for 1G or 2 life right before my turn. Or oops I can’t find more lands early on, gonna get back my fetchland or ramp spell. Extremely versatile just like other cards you were grading better for that exact reason.
I just added 'Sevinnes Reclamation' unto my 'Awaken the Blood Avatar' deck cause i have a lot of permanents it can recur. I didnt think i would use it so much a a ramp spell xd. It is also awesome that it can bring back 'Chandra, Acolyte of Flame' casue she lets you play instants or sorcerys from grave.
I'm so glad you put Serra Paragon on your list. I put it in Roon to test it and see if it was deserving of a spot. After a single game it is now a staple of my deck. If you can flicker it completely nullifies the downside of having to exile. Having the added bonus of getting back key cards like Thousand Year Elixer, Halo Fountain, and Quest for Renewal is well worth having to pay the mana and not just getting them back for free like most other Recursion effects. Great list and my favorite topic in a video so far.
Although there was so many different effects to talk about, I do think Season's Pass deserves a shout out in this video. 6. Mana two of which are green to return as many cards as you want from your grave to your hand, the only caveat is that it can only be one of each mana value is really good. It even puts itself to the bottom of your library rather than going to the graveyard, so it's an additional little bonus to protect itself from other players trying to cast it. And I've had great success with it with decks that have it in mind and decks that don't necessarily care that it's in there. I had a Jund control deck that I built with that as a "draw engine" and I was always getting back 4 - 7 cards every time I casted it and it's currently in my Gruul midrange deck and just knowing it's in there is a safety insurance that I can get my cards back at a later date. Just make sure you don't have to discard your hand at the end step for obvious reasons
Undead Butler...I have to say I've been listening to you both sing the praises of this, so I threw it in decks. It works. I've never seen it NOT do something. I love janky cards like this that aren't at all splashy but do a job well.
Strands of night: "pay 2 life sac a swamp and put target creature from your graveyard in to play." I kept thinking; now they are going to mention it but it never got it's props. It's one of my favorite repeatable recursion effects on a budget. "Witch of the moors" never crossed my radar. I have to have it now. Great list
Perennial Behemoth is another decent recursion piece for green decks. While it's more mana than Ramunap Excavator, it provides a beefier body, and the unearth provides another form of recursion for it.
Shout out to Lurrus being nuts! I have him as a Commander and is one of my current favorites to play! A bunch of innocuous small creatures, but when combined with the multiple value engines, death drains, and mass reanimation, it can get real fierce when firing on all cylinders!
Meren in the 99 is such an underrated inclusion. I play it in my 4cmc matters Prossh deck with Fleshwrither. To be able to Transfigure into Meren and then sac however many Kobalds to ensure you are getting the creature you want most back is way better then people expect it to be. You can even return Fleshwrither and do it again next turn.
Here's a fun one, Wheel of Sun and Moon. Cast this on yourself and everything just cycles back into your deck. Particularly hilarious with Rest in Peace effects as it bypasses your graveyard.
I had a game with Lurrus, an animate dead, and an opponent with Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath in their graveyard. Got to reanimate their uro twice and get a free growth spiral +3 life every turn after in black/white.
I like to attach Blade of Selves to Treasury Thrull and get (on average) 3 artifacts/creatures/enchantments back from the graveyard per attack. Even if Treasury Thrull dies in battle, with the theme of the deck, I'll get it back.
One pretty specific mass recursion spell that I've had people just scoop in response to is Storm of Souls. 4/W/W, return all creatures in your graveyard to the battlefield but as 1/1 spirits on addition to their other types. If you're etb heavy in your deck then honestly I think this is worth running then, most of the scoops are in response to the prospect of me having to sit there and resolve like twenty etbs. But I run it in Kykar because he can sack any or all of them for mana and potentially blow out the game with a string of spells, as well as in Zinnia(in the precon lol) to pump her to the moon.
I get torn between just straight up card draw and recursion, mostly because the new focus on graveyard hate can basically counter or nullify your recursion spells. That said, counter spells can nullify your draw spells, so...I've just had more than a couple times where I get my graveyard exiled in response to trying to recur something, and its like, "YOOOWTCH..."
I don’t think it’s an either or. I think of it as the total of my card advantage package. And I edit depending on what the deck actually does, but I will always buy in both..
Amazing topic! After reading some budget commander brews from Tomer from MTGGoldfish, I started to put around 2 recursiom cards in all my decks. Happy to see you guys touching on this topic too.
Would underworld breach also fit this category? It let's you replay anything from the yard of course, but it also tends to end the game on the spot for basically 2 mana.
I know it’s more late game but eerie ultimatum has worked amazing for my black green white deck! Out of nowhere I bring back every creature in my graveyard.
Noxious revival is the best version of these cards (in regards to getting it to hand) It’s instant speed, free and can be tacked on to any draw effect, or just before you draw for turn in order to get it to hand.
One recursion spell for artifacts and enchatments that I like a lot is Dance of the Manse, even ignoring the fact that you cards can turn into 4/4. Brilliant Restoration may be expensive and the cost is restrictive, but I like it too. I could cast it even in my 3-colors deck. Mainly because it is a late game card that you probably are going to cast after turn 7.
Ruling... A mdfc is its front while in the graveyard and counts as the front unless it's played as a land, via Crucible effect. Which means Shigeki can't see Bala Ged Recovery, but Pull from the Deep can? Am I missing something? I have been playing and using mdfcs with this restriction.
I can't believe you put Trash for Treasure but skipped over the two best creatures. Goblin Welder, the OG and best way to recur artifacts on a creature, and Goblin Engineer. They both do so much work in getting back key artifacts and Goblin Engineer even puts the one you want to get back in your graveyard. I use it to find and recur Skullclamp in my Krenko deck all the time. Shigeki needs more recognition and I'm glad you agree. It does everything a deck built around recursion wants to do and all in one card. It ramps, it mills, and it recurs cards back to hand. What more could you ask for. Also Tezzeret, Master of the Bridge is how I go off with Displacer Kitten in my Alela Artifact themed deck. It loops Lotus Petal for infinite mana and Chromatic Star / Sphere for infinite draw if you have a cost reduction effect.
My absolute auto include recursion is shigeki and it’s loops with bala ged/regrowth, in combo with timeless witness, I find I play timeless over eternal because it being able to recur itself is worth the extra mana to me
Beezy saying he doesn't like Mimic Vat makes me think he hasn't played against a Syr Konrad deck that uses it. 1 board wipe when you have a Mimic Vat can let you stack triggers in a way that'll double Syr Konrad's triggers and very likely win you the game on the spot.
23:55 no respect for my champion Skullwinder? He is the best E-Witness effect out there. Actually has a relevant body and you can trade the opponent effect for favors or make the game more fun by fueling the player who is behind.
To this day it isn't known to mankind if Heliod actually owns a place called "Hall of Generosity" or if it is maybe someone elses hall that was just named after Heliod, to honor his generosity. I guess we'll never figure that out. Just want to make sure Joe doesn't upset the actual owner.
Skullwinder is better than Eternal Witness - controversial opinion. There’ll almost always be someone with nothing good in their graveyard and even if there isn’t you can make deals in your favour with the person you choose. Don’t attack me with that and I’ll bring it back for you etc And that’s without even mentioning the deathtouch blocker you get after.
Mission Briefing is NOT better than Snapcaster Mage even in Commander. Snapcaster is a creature, so avoids cards like Fierce Guardianship and Swan Song, and the ability is an ETB so you can have repeated recursion with things like Conjurer's Closet or Thassa. It also doubles up with Panharmonicon and Elesh Norn Mother of Machines for extra value, you can flicker it with Cloudshift and Eerie Interlude to get more spells back, and last but not least, you can chump block with it! Saying Mission Briefing is better than Snapcaster Mage is like saying Regrowth is better than E Witness!
Happened to pause the video at 7:14 and Joe, you look so bothered and disgusted for some reason on this freeze frame. Just thought you would enjoy some entertainment as I did. Hope you are getting enough rest and stay healthy!
Disappointed not to see The Cruelty of Gix or From the Catacombs, as far as 5 mana reanimation goes I find them usually better than Incarnation Technique, the Initiative from From the Catacombs can just win games on its own.
If Beezy gets any skinnier he's going to turn into a 0/1 with shadow.
Thats a bit mean 😓

definitly a strong contender for my future golgari pauper commander decks thanks man!
i mean there are like 20000 cards out there and in almost every boosterpack so yeah :D
It's a solid budget include for sure!
I think Noxious Revival is a great card at all levels. Even a lower casual levels, oops my bomb got countered or milled, gonna get it back for 1G or 2 life right before my turn. Fyi most people write that mana as G and not 1G. 1G is something like Rampant Growth.
Card I like a lot is “You happen on a glade”. It’s got ramp and recursion to your hand. The versatility is what I use it for
I just added 'Sevinnes Reclamation' unto my 'Awaken the Blood Avatar' deck cause i have a lot of permanents it can recur. I didnt think i would use it so much a a ramp spell xd. What I love about the T-shirts is that they are art and not bold font of 'brand name'.

Perennial Behemoth is another decent recursion piece for green decks. While it's more mana than Ramunap Excavator, it provides a beefier body, and the unearth provides another form of recursion for it.

Tortured existence in Sefris is amazing
I love venturing in the dungeon at each players turn
These are some very good cards to add to my Commander decks. Thanks for the video Nitpicking Nerds.

I run Snapcaster in my Anhelo deck. A 2/1 body to casualty and get a spell back is a win.
One pretty specific mass recursion spell that I've had people just scoop in response to is Storm of Souls. 4/W/W, return all creatures in your graveyard to the battlefield but as 1/1 spirits on addition to their other types. Can't relate too much, my favorite thing about magic is creature recursion. Never have a way to bring back instants or sorceries tho.
I can't believe you put Trash for Treasure but skipped over the two best creatures. Goblin Welder, the OG and best way to recur artifacts on a creature, and Goblin Engineer. I take it they lost Moxfield sponsorship?
Feathers is a deck I don’t need recurrsion for. I’m starting to put more and more into my other decks.
Pair-O-Dice Lost is really good! A bit costly but it can get so many things back
Where's brought back? Possibly the best white recursion spell..
My absolute auto include recursion is shigeki and it’s loops with bala ged/regrowth, in combo with timeless witness, I find I play timeless over eternal because it being able to recur itself is worth the extra mana to me

I once had a good time in a round of Commander until another guy at the table brought out Archfiend of Ifnir with Tortured Existence on the board...
I like running the trifecta of Volrath's Stronghold, Hall of Heliod's, and Academy Ruins in my Alela deck.
