Does the Midas DN4816-O system work with the X32 via Ultranet?

- The online documentation wasn't clear so I took a risk.
Here's proof that the DN4816 series of products works with ultranet (despite what people on musictribe might try to tell you).
I will be using this to add extra outputs to my X32 rack whilst retaining USB audio function for DAW use.
Firmware:
DN4816-0 = 2.0
X32 = 4.06
X32 edit = 4.3
There’s something oddly comforting about an Ozzy swearing.
Awesome thanks for this. The 8x8, M32C and a Dante card is my new back up rig. Didn't know if this would work and neither did any sales person.
That's why I felt compelled to put the video up! There was just no info available!
Just took delivery of a DB4888 (8 in + 8 out) to go with my XR18. Had to get it from Sweetwater in USA. Still good value. Adds more outputs and will work as a nice digital snake.
So can you use the 8x8 and get 8 more inputs over Ultranet as well? How does that work?
Hi Theo, i my DN4888 not working. I'm trying to get signal from my X32Rack.Oscilator is ON feeding BUS 1. The routing is P16out - Output 1 to mixbus1. Any idea? Thx in advance
Thank you so much for this!
Can you go through routing to show how you would add this to your network?
I’m using an M32C and a DL32 and I’d like to use the 4888 as a second stage box across the stage.
Hi Chris, my pleasure! I've been thinking about doing a somewhat less adhoc video on the setup and how it works.
To be sure I address your question, are you referring to audio routing or network routing?
@@MrTheog1989
For me it would be network routing and setup. Specifically the connectivity between the 4888 and my DL32/M32C as all they have in common is Ethernet. Connecting the DL32/M32C wasn’t straight forward for me and those were intended to work together.
Do we need to use a special ether-con cable or will any CAT5e cable work? What is the setup process in the software so that they recognize each other? I use the M32 mix app.
Thank you so much!
@@chrismitlyng1411 A regular CAT5e cable should do just fine! The routing scenario really isn't laid out very clearly. Do you have a way I can send you some screenshots?
YESSSS, I wanted this so BAD! Thank you! This will add 16 outputs to my Behringer XR18!!!
You're welcome dude!
@@MrTheog1989 WHAT? That's amazing! I just sold my XR-18 and got an X32 because I needed more outs. This doesn't require some converter between StageConnect and UltraNet? Amazing!
@@TheXIT Nope, its all UltraNet! The rear of the DN4816 units have UltraNet onboard!
@mastablasta9x This may add 16 outputs to the XR18, but there aren’t any free busses, can you explain what the added value of that would be? It’s not like you’ll get any additional busses to work with, so how will this be usefull? Or did I miss something?
@@merlijnduynstee you can send any of the 18 channels into Ultranet post-fader so you can use XR18 as a multichannel pre-processor with USB audio. So in that way you have a lot more outputs. But there's no more buses indeed, so no additional monitor mixes for example.
Can the 16ch input boxes work the same way to add 16ch input via ultranet? If so, can the preamp gains be controlled by the x32?
There is no preamp in these stageboxes. Only for line level sources.
Awesome, exactly what I was hoping for. As long as they don't release an XR18 / X32 with StageConnect at least.
As for Ultranet on the X32, can you assign mixes / buses to the Ultranet outputs channels or does it only send a single input per channel? Since it is "for monitoring" and ultranet receivers usually do their own mix.
The latter would result in a slightly awkward config where the native XLR buses have to be used for IEM and the actual outputs for FOH mix have to go over the DN4816-O.
Nice one mate. Lots more options for X32/M32 outputs with this pathway working. Just to be clear, you have connected Ultranet port from back of X32 rack to Ultranet port on MidasDN4816-O, using Cat5e cable?
Yep, that's exactly how I've connected it.
So would the DN4816 also work over UltraNet Giving 16 "Midas" Preamps to my X32 rack? This would be amazing! That could help solve Behringer owner's Midas preamp envy!
Yes indeed!
How? Ultranet only passes the 16 Ultranet channel signals out via the Ultranet port. I believe only the O model you have in the video will work via Ultranet. It would need an AES
A/B port to pass audio both in or out. It only does all the fancy stuff with the stage connect port for the wing console.
@@MrTheog1989 Please explain how...
Looks like an interesting way to do an Iem rig and splitter in one? Will the 8 outs on the X32 still work as outs with this plugged in?
I have a x32 mixer.
Been thinking about buying the midas dl32 stage box.
Would this work on the x32 mixer?
For the kind of music I do,
I would be happy with a configuration of 24 channels using 2 stage box, 8 aux for monitors and then the other 8 channels on the mixer I can use them for different mixes for in ear monitor.
has anyone experienced every odd number channel outputting a lot of noise? bought a DN4816-O unit recently and it seem kinda buggy in terms of noise on the outputs, a re-boot helped, but it seems like every second or third boot up does this buggy noise thing :((
figured it would help to do a firmware update on th DN4816-O but i cant find a link for firmware updates ........
Can I use this and the X32 Core to send a Pre EQ signal to FOH independent of what's happening to our IEM? Trying to build as small of an IEM fly rig as possible.
Unfortunately I'm not familiar with the x32 core
Great video, however; I don't quite think you were cruel enough about the lack of documentation from Midas; even the MusicTribe forum has nothing on it so suggest how these can be linked up. It's appalling.
This morning's job was, literally, to get my Midas Hub4, connected to my X32 Rack, to "see" the DNs and be able to use them!?!??!
I made an account on the MusicTribe forum just to post replied to the two times these units have been spoken about.
Both times the poster was told that these DN units would not work with other ultranet equipment and that the ultranet port only converted ultranet to the new stageconnect protocol.
These bits of gear are addressing and issue that many bands running IEM systems have only been able to solve with much more expensive gear in the past, so why not let the community know?! It's crazy hahaha
@@MrTheog1989 I shan't mention the guys name, Dave, but he says "Yeah, that'll work!" to stuff that clearly doesn't!!! I spend £2k on kit, on the basis that he said it'd work, only to find I can only use 16 channels of the 48 promised?!?!
Your video has probably saved me £1k upwards, never mind the additional rack space/cabling/hassle/setup... 🙂
Out of interest, what settings do you have on the rear of your DN4816o?
@@derekchapman5167 Oh geez, what gear are you running?
I'm really glad this video helped you out, initially I just filmed it to send to some mates over messenger, then figured it might be useful for the broader community!
My setup is:
- X32 ultranet lead to DN4816-O ultranet input
- syncronisation set to ultranet
- analogue outputs 1-16
@@MrTheog1989 I was using the X32/M32c, via AES50 to the Hub4 with the DN4416i and DN4416o; however, you could only "see" channels 33-48 on the X32/M32c, i.e. you could have only 16 in, or 16 out, rather than the full 48 that AES50 allows. The MusicTribe forum all said "Yeah, it'll work fine", but as soon as you pressed them for settings/examples it'd all go strangely quiet... 🙂
I'm selling the Hub4 and the DN4416i, thanks to your video I can use my X32 rack with the DN4416o to give me an extra 16 outputs! :-) It was outputs I needed, for FOH mixes/buses.
@@MrTheog1989 Note to self; when trying to connect the DN to the X32, don't use the AES50a port, use the Ultranet!!! You won't waste 30 minutes cursing as to why the fcuk it's not working!?!? :-)
I was thinking 'this guy is gonna eat his words!" hahaha
Imagine using the USB outs to go to a laptop with all 32 Channels simultaniously. You could hook up as many audiointerfaces as your computer can handle and therefore creating even more outputs.
Theo THANK YOU for this insight. I failed to find if the same DN4816-O could connect to the XR18 Ultranet, which is Output only. With ATMOS we commonly need 12 ch outputs for speakers (XR18 has 8 XLR outs). Currently I use 2 x P16 ultranet personal mixers to patch the extra 4 output channels to speakers, but messy. Did any find XR18 -> DN4816-O works ? I really appreciate any one who can test please.
You're welcome Jeff! I don't have access to an XR18 unfortunately so I can't test your scenario
I ordered this beauty and will check it with my XR18 in a few days :)
@@PR3Runner Please let me know how you go, I'm very interested!
@@MrTheog1989 The XR18 works exactly the same as the X32 👍
@@PR3Runner awesome!!
Great! Does the Midas DN4816-I also can work?
I haven't tested it personally so I can't be sure. I would have to assume it does though.
I also would like to know that, did anyone try it?
So you were able to pass the 16 Ultranet channels out of this unit? I’m looking to use it as a splitter for front of house from our IEM rack. Should essentially be able to pass 16 channels of direct out through this via the Ultranet routing page?
yes, that would work.
@@TinoSchulz1990 confirmed, got it set up about a week ago. Thank for this info. Much appreciated.
Hey, quick question since you pulled the trigger
I currently got a x32 with 2 arts8 giving me 16 outputs to foh from the arts8
If i get a sd16 and the DN4816-o would that give me 32 inputs and 32 outputs to foh? (sd16 via aes50 and DN4816 via ultranet)
Thanks
Regarding routing etc, (not sure if you tested) would you lose the ability for running a P16 alongside... or is it simply routing the Bus outs to the Ultranet?
I don't have a P16 to try this with. What connection does it use?
I've just certain output channels to ultranet at this stage.
is the power supply big?
does it work?
🍻
Well, good thing, it works. I just don't see any Reason why I'd need more Outputs than Inputs. I mean, i usually use like 3-4 times as many inputs than Outputs. Plus you only have 16 mix busses. They are pretty tight anyways.(if you use bus compression and or time based effects)
Stereo in ear rigs and FOH sends :)
My band has got the Midas MR18 and with this, like mentioned, we can manage to have stereo iems and still enough outs for foh without a splitter
Wow
Why do you feel it necessary to use profanities?
