Totally agree with the comments of there being no need to shock on a regular basis. I am just now having to shock my pool in Sept for the first time all year. The reason is simple I neglected the pool and lost most of my chlorine and the pool got green. I generally only need 2 chemicals all year around. Chlorine tablets and acid that is it for an above ground vinyl liner for setup and summer maintenance.
Sir, this is a great overview and comprehensive pool chemistry lesson and why to shock the pool as this answered my questions! It would be helpful to show how to do a Chlorine demand test. I don't think my basic pool water test kit can do this so I have to take water to my pool store. As a side note, I am embarrassed for mankind when I read some of the ignorant comments below. "Sean" obviously never attempted much less completed high school chemistry. I apologize for those people and please keep the good information forthcoming.
He is correct but "only if" you test positive for chloramines (another indicator is that chlorine gas smell), then yes you should shock your pool with raising your chlorine level up to 5-10 ppm as long as your CYA is in the OK range (High levels of CYA require higher levels of chlorine so that can increase the ppm you need in order to shock). Just the logic of shocking your pool regularly as some kind of maintenance routine that will balance your pool is incorrect. I recommend shocking with just liquid chlorine not your typical Calcium based shocks which have a lot of calcium in them. Because if you shock often, it will increase your TDS considerably requiring you to remove some or all of your pool water which is costly not to mention high levels of calcium are not good for your pool and equipment either (Although I add Descale for pools to keep the calcium in suspension so it is harmless buying me time). Another important consideration is making sure people are not swimming in unsafe high levels of chlorine from shocking.
Ouu Sorry one other question. Pool tech stated do not put to much chlorine at once it could destroy liner. Ironic your pool in this video is identical to mine. Same liner, ladder same location. My diving board is straight.
Hi Maybe you can give me some advice. No Promises I understand it's just advice. Pool has been closed 6 years its green/brown. I put 4 bags of shock. According to 5 panel test stripes. NO change in Chlorine level. Free and total 0 PH 7.0 AK. One shade up from Low (dark Blue). Test strip indicates a Blue almost Purple. Hardness 0 Cir. Acid 0 I have about an inch of sediment / algae on bottom. Pool is 32 ft long By 16 wide Depth 2 ft. To 9ft I ran filter approx 7 hrs Trying to figure a way to Vacuum to Waste with my Hayward DE Perflex DC 65. Again tech gave an alternative way to vac. To waste. Since I do not have a Multi Port. Open Drian Valve and vacuum. When done clean filter add DE.
Keep the ph level correct also .I've never had to use more than two pounds of shock ...IF YOUR CHLORINE AND PH IS NOT CORRECT YOU WILL HAVE LINER DAMAGE ,NEVER OVER DO IT OR YOU WILL BURN THE LINER AND FILTER SYSTEM
You should use your tablets typically once per week, monitor how fast they dissolve and that will determine how often you should add more. do not use them in your skimmer basket, go pick up a chlorine tablet floater at your local pool store. and so you know, the tablets are just there to support the current chlorine levels that you had created so that it dissipates slower.
Hehe y’all are silly in these comments. Yes you do have to shock multiple times a year no matter what I’ve been cleaning pools for 10 years. you see raccoon pool, duck pool, human poop. You can’t see urine which has ammonia which kills chlorine. What if someone is in the pool with an infected wound? All the bacteria from that wound is dispersing in the pool. All of these factor in very unhealthy water that you accidentally swallow goes in your nose eyes and ears. So the chances of bacteria entering you’re body and making you very sick and potentially killing you are very high. That’s why the health department is involved at commercial pools to much of a liability. So yes it’s great to shock your pool. And no you can’t overchlorinate because the only thing that will happen is a chem-lock which the chlorine will 0 out.

I worked on pools for years, but I did not know the science ..GREAT INFO ,THANK YOU
This is by far the most comprehensive discussion on basic water maintenance!! Brilliant. Thank you sir

Great explanation, thanks

Hi
Maybe you can give me some advice.
No Promises I understand it's just advice.
Pool has been closed 6 years its green/brown.
I put 4 bags of shock. According to 5 panel test stripes. NO change in Chlorine level.
Free and total 0
PH 7.0
AK. One shade up from Low (dark Blue). Test strip indicates a Blue almost Purple.
Hardness 0
Cir. Acid 0
I have about an inch of sediment / algae on bottom.
Pool is 32 ft long
By
16 wide
Depth 2 ft.
To
9ft
I ran filter approx 7 hrs
Trying to figure a way to Vacuum to Waste with my Hayward DE Perflex DC 65.
Again tech gave an alternative way to vac. To waste. Since I do not have a Multi Port.
Open Drian Valve and vacuum.
When done clean filter add DE.
Wonderful explanation thank you!
Maybe he needs to wear a close-range microphone. The camera's embedded microphone is picking up a lot of background sound!
Very informative thank you you helping me a lot
Keep the ph level correct also .I've never had to use more than two pounds of shock ...IF YOUR CHLORINE AND PH IS NOT CORRECT YOU WILL HAVE LINER DAMAGE ,NEVER OVER DO IT OR YOU WILL BURN THE LINER AND FILTER SYSTEM
There is nothing said in this video actually justifies why you should shock your pool
what the heck is a chlorine demand test?
Awesome!
Birds are annoying in the background. Hard to hear the gentleman.
a properly maintained pool never needs to be shocked

oh man.... Tear Gas
Love this lesson!
So after you shock do you go ahead and use the chlorine tablet skimmer right after or no?
idk abhout you but i can hear fine
trichloramine NCl3
wikipedia
Nitrogen_trichloride
just for general info
bunch of bullcrap...really dude...did you not think people would do their own research.
This video is full of inaccurate info .... just FULL of it!!
