- Leather-making in the Fez Medina in Morocco dates back to the 11th century. There are three tanneries in Fez, this being the largest. Tourists are given a sprig of mint to hold under their nose, which partially masks the stench of limestone, ammonia, and the secret ingredient: pigeon droppings. This video shows a brief orientation at the terrace overlooking the pits. After this tourists are taken to the showroom to negotiate a price on leather jackets, purses, slippers, ottomans, belts and so on. You will not find a bargain here and the salespeople will try to charge you a years wage for one item but they will barter down if you are savvy.
The quality of the items vary drastically so inspect them well before bartering. I have been told tourists should pay between €5 to €10 for belt, €150 to €250 for a decent jacket and around the same for a top quality handbag however there are many a lot cheaper (although the sales people will always say the one you like is the highest quality so it should be more expensive - LOL).
Be aware that this place smells a fair bit and sometimes the children of workers join their parents at work to assist.
