  • The Vitpilen 701 is a peppy little lane splitter and a sporty country ride all in one, but would I buy one?
    In all honesty probably not. It is a head turner and it is a spirited ride but for a more useable set up I'd probably go for the Svartpilen since it comes with upright bars and is therefore more useable in a town. But when you think further if you're looking for a spirited single cylinder crotch rocket with upright bars then the 690 Duke is the obvious choice since it is essentially the same bike for less money.
    But if practicality and budget are your only concerns then you are probably not the market this bike is aimed at. Sometimes you have to let your heart write the cheques.

    These things are painfully pretty. And because of its minimalist design, I think it's going to age really well.

      Yep, I'd agree with that. It's still going to turn heads in years to come. Just needs an aftermarket exhaust to really make sure they know you're coming.

      I think it will age quickly. Futuristic designs always do.

    It's a bike I would have in the lounge as it's such a great looking machine.
    And would probably never ride.
    That's why I bought the 701sm instead 😁

    Looking at getting my first bike, and I think this is about perfect for me. I can only find used now as they are no longer made, so something with low miles. I think I would go with the Svartpilen. The seating position is a little more upright. Used they are around $6500. And there are a lot of upgrades from Rottweiler to increase the output a bit and improve the sound.

    I will be getting this in the near future, I do commute although I live in the twist world of north Wales.
    Oh and I drink flat whites but standard milk!

      Where abouts in North Wales? I'm from Colwyn Bay originally so I pop up pretty frequently. Love to get your opinion on it once you've had it a little while.

    I test rode this bike yesterday. I got a pain in the back of my neck after 20min around Sussex back roads. Apart from that, I loved it. There's a bar riser kit and bars you can buy for this but I wonder will it ruin the look/lines? The Vitpilen 701 is now £7000 and the new Svartpilen £8900. The riser and bars cost approx £350. The 790 Duke has jumped in price to £8800 just for comparison.

      @RarefiedRoad  5 років тому +1

      Thanks for the feedback. I think I'd probably put the risers on it if I were to commute on it or ride it more than once a week. Interesting price difference between two. I think I'd probably save the money and buy this with risers rather than the Svartpilen though, can't imagine it would destroy the looks too much.

    Thank you very much for this review. I fell in love with this at the beginning of 2018 and vowed to get one. I passed my DAS in Nov 2018 and proceeded to insurance quotes. New rider, 41, clean licence no records etc.,about £400 though!!! Gutted. Here I am some months later on a '15 plate CB500F. It's lovely, but no Vit 701. I do need to get on one and try it out. I'm older than my brain wants to admit, so I am swayed by relative comfort and don't want my bones shaken. My eye has also wondered off to look at the new cbr650 too. I'm going to get a year the 500 under my belt and see what's what then.

    • @RarefiedRoad
      @RarefiedRoad  5 років тому +1

      Nice choice. I'd say have a look at the Honda CB650R as well, it looks very similar to the Vitpilen and I'm guessing would be a little easier to live with for comfort, but I think you're going to have to try the Husky anyway just so you're not left wondering what could have been.

      @Arcadiality 5 років тому

      Rarefied Road The 500 was just over £155 for a years fully comp, for my novice ass. Pretty good. It made sense to go that way. I can’t money like that on insurance, I’ll need to try n build my no claims. You fix t say in your vid, I don’t think, but what is in your new bike short list? ,,,,,or is that a future vid?

    • @RarefiedRoad
      @RarefiedRoad  5 років тому +1

      @@Arcadiality I'll be listing them in a future vid. It's mainly middle weight retro inspired bikes like the Guzzi V7, Street Twin, Enfield 650 Interceptor and this. There are some others in contention but they are the favourites, and mainly as you say because of insurance costs since I live in London.

    I really like this bike. It just needs bar risers. I agree about more weight equalling stability, but I remember riding a KTM 640 SM in the mid 2000s, and that felt stable.

    Reviewed one a while back and enjoyed it. Beautiful, unique and agile. But to live with, at least as an only bike, outside the urban environment, it would get tiring. Cheers and great review.

    i stumbled across your channel today and watched several videos. I am a fan of your overview of the bikes in the lounge setting, you don't come across this style of editing. I much prefer this over the motovlogging style.

      Thanks, it's easier to explain certain things off the bike than on it so it's useful to have a mix of both. Thanks for the feedback.

    Nice review sir, as always. The 701 is certainly different, but I think my 690 Duke R is just as good and for the money I save I can buys litres of alternative milk products for my fancy coffees.

    • @RarefiedRoad
      @RarefiedRoad  5 років тому

      Ha! You certainly can. I think I'd have just as much fun on the 690 Duke, my favourite feature is how light and flickable it is and you get that on the KTM as well so I'd happily save my money and go orange.

    Thank you for your motorcycle reviews!
    Questions - Husqvarna Vitpilen 701 versus Triumph Bonneville Speed Twin:
    1) What is the 701 like to ride versus the Speed Twin (riding position, torque, maneuverability)?
    2) Which bike feels better for city commuting?

    • @RarefiedRoad
      @RarefiedRoad  5 років тому

      I don't think either would be my choice for commuting but I'd say the Vitpilens brother the Svartpilen 701 because it's the same bike but it has the flat bars. The speed twin is great but the throttle is a bit jerky at low speeds. The Husqarna is a punchy and agile weapon great for exploiting small gaps in traffic.

    Well, to be blunt, it’s a concealed dirt bike drivetrain, by a dirt bike company. Actually two dirt bike companies. Squint your eyes while riding and you’ll notice your on a low and sporty big bore enduro, with trick bits. Quick shifter, mega brake, wait ......don’t look down at the triple clamp, the secret is revealed.......... Motocross Fork Adjusters. The salient point is that when this bike becomes more Americanized by gaining another cylinder and double the braking force it will. No longer tug at the heart strings of dirt bike riders.

    Yes I prefer the KTM 790 but is the build quality of this one better?

    • @RarefiedRoad
      @RarefiedRoad  5 років тому +2

      Tough one. If you're asking about reliability I don't know, but I'd guess it has the same reliability as the 690. For fit and finish they are both about the same but the 790 has more toys.
