  • Hi all,
I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas. Yesterday, I decided to do a video on a small job a friend/farmer needed done. To keep things simple, the video is mainly to compare the start-up of two Rotabroach magnetic drilling/cutting machines against each other, and in turn to bypass the one I believe at fault from factory.
The Rotabroach Panther was used to demonstrate how the older technology’s control circuitry allows the machine’s motor to start-up on any gauge of sheet metal. It is seen that the Rotabroach Element 30 and all other Element series do not allow the drill to start-up even once the electro magnetics are energised on 3mm or even 6mm steel plate. This is to ensure the safety of the user is not compromised, overhead drilling etc. However, I believe it is common sense to know if the machine has sufficient hold to a girder without this extra feature. A harness which is used is more than enough. For example, when using the Rotabroach Panther, there was no issues.
Due to this (Over the top) feature as demonstrated in the video, it makes the machine quite useless when working on certain girders, box section, sheet steel or anything 6mm or below. General fabrication or work on some structural materials is simply a big no no. Anything 6mm or below, these machines refuse to start up which is a shame as they can drill even 2mm plate and below towards the direction of gravity with no need to hold/stabilise the top end of the motor once started up as demonstrate. It would be common sense to keep a hold on machine if using it overhead for thinner materials if required or don’t use it if unsafe.
Therefore, in the video I demonstrate a technique to bypass the safety circuit to allow it to act like the bigger Rotabroach Panther in the video. I do this by raising the Hall-effect sensor connections up so the device detects that it is now in a magnetic field. This means, no damage to the drill or altering of the current safety circuit within the PCB.
Enjoy! More interesting videos coming soon around my projects.
    Thank you,
    Jeffrey

Great job, very well explained. Typical farmers machine..chipped cutting bit and safety gaurd removed..haha. But I bet the owner will be well pleased with the new modifications!
