I've stopped using facebook aka fakefok the tiktok wannabe because it's FULL of autogenerated spam.
Zuckerberg is SO DESPERATE to have users join groups on the platform...probably because he gets a huge cut of the profits from user data sales to data brokers. I got fed up with seeing "support local businesses by joining these groups" spam posts every third post on the facebook newsfeed that it makes the platform unusable......I've been on the platform LONG ENOUGH to know how touse the search feature to find groups on MY OWN TIME and don't need (or want) zuckerberg pressuring me into doing so.
The reason I call it "fakefok the tiktok wannabe" is because old Zuck is DESPERATELY trying to immitate that tiktok garbage as is youtube as well with that reels & shorts crap respectively. As much as I HATE that tiktok garbage I hope bytedance sues both facebook and google for copyright infringement.
Due to the chinese communist government having control over chinese made apps and the ultimate ability to obtain user data whenever it wants the united states is soon going to ban that tiktok crap and that can't happen fast enough as that platform is DANGEROUS to our nation's young people who are the platform's target demographic by encouraging users to commit crimes such as hotwiring hyundai and kia automobiles using cell phone chargers or encouraging teen agers to swallow laundry detergent pods and other such harmful behavior.
Eventually that tiktok crap will be replaced by some other social media app that teenagers just have to have in order to remain popular with the other "cool kids" using it that is until the novelty of the platform wears off and they go in search of the next dopamine fix.

As someone who recently went to college the hardest part of not being on instagram is the feeling like I won't know what everyone in my grade is doing, that I won't know whats happening everywhere. The key is you have to acknowledge that you probably aren't supposed to know what everyone is doing all the time.

This is my opinion social media shouldn’t exist. Social media affects mental health. Posting the good parts of your life is weird. We don’t show the behind the scenes it’s all fake. Why are we so obsessed with deceiving others. People compare their lives to others. A lot of people don’t post pictures without filters. All of us are lying to each other about our lives. Social media is addicting. Especially the short videos almost every platform has now. It makes our attention span shorter and can lead to adhd. We waste hours on these platforms when we could be doing other things that are productive. We could have found the cure to herpes hiv cancer but we waste hours looking on our phones. Social media is making people anti social and have anxiety. People rather talk online than in person. Humans need human interaction. Social media can put people life in danger. People can track where you are. Strangers can groom minors. People are meeting up with people they meet online and being killed because the person on social media is fake. There are other ways to stay connected without social media. Before social media people stayed connected by talking on the phone or texting. Which is less addicting. On social media platforms there algorithms that keep us addicted to the app. Before social media people went out and met new people and had human interaction instead of only online. Seeing other people post fake pictures showing only the good parts of their lives isn’t staying connected. Staying connected is communication. Most people don’t use social media to find out news and if you do use social media for that purpose you can find out news other ways by cable tv by watching actual news companie or using news only platforms. Social media isn’t the most reliable news anyway. Some people might say social media is good to promote your business. There are other ways to promote your business without using an addictive platform. There is radio cable tv streaming apps billboards news paper cable news etc

You really have a point there and in some of this beware of social media challenges that are very deadly and other people to avoid those Cancel Culture Freaks , Karens and easily offended people which in this day and age with danger and uncertainty all around those types really go around among other fakes and also don't forget the Cyberbullies too considering social media if you haven't really look that up as well on Surviving that. Really not the times of before childhood that's for sure then again posting that especially of parts like Saturday Morning Cartoon eras or of some group can really trigger those types and won't end well. Oh yeah and don't forget those people that do victim blaming as well.

I have been free from social media since 2018. And here’s my perspective on it (for anyone struggling to quit or take a break)
I had only one Instagram account which I made in 2016 I guess. Initially, it was a personal account where I posted my own pictures with some write ups which I wrote. Gradually, I changed into a complete write up page and made it public, with no photos of mine. Most of my followers were my friends, cousins and acquaintances and the number was fluctuating. If one day it was 500, other day would have less followers or some days more. Anyway, I was not a daily poster unlike many other writers, including my own sister. My sister wanted to make a “brand” out of it, which she successfully did. Whereas I was not writing regularly and if something I didn’t find worth posting, I did not, because I wrote mostly for my own sake and my write ups were usually different from others, especially when it came to topics and using certain words (which I never liked).
I was not much happy with few likes, comments and certain unknown who followed my page just to read (which I appreciated). And gradually, I started taking breaks. I hate to admit but I was a bit jealous of my sister who had a huge following, likes and comments and honestly her write ups were almost like others, not much creativity. Fast forward to 2018 July, I deactivated my account due to my exams. For few days, I felt… free. Didn’t know what to do in my free time, but in few days, my loneliness disappeared. I had given control of my life, mood, thoughts and opinions to an app that was subconsciously affecting me. And I made a decision to never get back to it. I didn’t tell anyone when I quit.
In 2019 Oct, I came back for 2-3 days just to see what’s happening. Uploaded one write up and then bam! I disappeared again 😂. I found that I was again falling into that habit of scrolling mindlessly, so I left.
Now in 2023, my account has completely gone and I think it’s some Instagram policy that if you don’t reactivate your account for more than a year, it gets permanently deleted. Nevertheless, it didn’t affect me.
    Now, my perspective of SM:
    - believe it or not, it subconsciously affect your thoughts, opinions and behaviours. Your own individuality is at risk of loss. If something impacts you positively, that’s great but if it triggers some negativity, look out for it.
-you will always compare yourself with others, inferiority or superiority complex will always be there
-as said in video, and my own experience, your creativity is affected. You want to be like others for likes, mass reach
-it controls your life which is the saddest part. Unknowingly you give charge of your everything to the app
UA-cam is SM but you can use it for learning, music, movies. I have decided to not watch shorts now as it eats up my time a lot.
If someone has read this comment fully, you have my respect mate :)

I read the full comment. I just wrote a ridiculously long comment myself, so I thought I should at least read yours. This is clearly a subject people are very passionate about, so the only way to cover it all is in a long comment. 😃
I tried to delete Instagram last year. I made it to around 20 days of the 30-day deletion period, but I found myself getting drawn back in. And it's exactly how you described it. I came back to see what was happening, but I just found myself mindlessly scrolling and getting annoyed by things again. As a policy, Instagram doesn't allow you to delete it again within 7 days (if I remember correctly) after cancelling a deletion, so I just ended up keeping it.
Well, it's now 2023 and I think I'm done with it again. I just disactivated it for now, but I think I'll go ahead with the full deletion in a few days. I deleted Facebook over 6 years ago and I don't regret it one bit. It's funny because I found myself going through a bit of a panic when I did it, thinking that I was letting my friends down. I was even taking note of how many days I had left; I believe Facebook's deletion period was 14 days. I remember getting to day 13 and thinking, "You can still cancel this if you want. It's not too late." I persisted though. Day 15 came, I tried logging on again, and I saw that my account was no longer there. I didn't feel sad at all. It actually gave me a sense relief and a feeling of, "I've done it. I'm out. No more." I think I'll feel the same way when I get rid of Instagram.

instagram has changed a lot since the beginning. For the worse. I do this on a regular lol. I just won't go on for a week (I usually delete the app altogether). The past year insta has just been really annoying me. Can totally relate to the muscle memory tho, it's so crazy. Definitely an addiction. Always end up re-installing. But I'm at a point where I go on for 30 seconds and just get bored and annoyed so I close it. Randomly will go into a rabbit hole tho, that's when I delete it again. But yeah, instagram sucks now.
Honestly, I prefer youtube over anything. More creative freedom, and I find people who interact are different. More intimate/real.

It's a shame because it used to be such a nice little app.
I first got it around 2014. Back then it was mainly a hobby-based app to inspire people to take photographs and create an online portfolio. Plus, not many people had it in 2014 (Facebook was the main social media platform then), so it was nice to see which friends had Instagram and what kind of pictures they were taking. It wasn't that social, in the sense that people wouldn't be posting pictures of themselves at parties, writing statuses, sharing songs, sharing articles or sharing memes like they would be on Facebook. They might post a picture every two or three weeks, and that was fine. The scrolling was nice too because it was all in chronological order. Since I was only following about 15 or 20 people when I started, I would probably only see three or four new pictures before I was back to where I left off last time. You weren't checking it as often as you would Facebook.
But then, around 2016, I found that it was becoming more of a social media app than a hobby app. Pretty much everyone Facebook friend I had made the jump to Instagram, so I was now following over 100 people. Then, it became popular for bands, musicians, athletes, actors and sports teams to create accounts, which I would also end up following. Ads were becoming more prevalent. The scrolling system was completely ruined (it's practically endless now, showing you things they think you'll like). More and more meme accounts were being made. Then stories came along, which is essentially a Facebook status, so we'd get people uploading snippets of their lives or sharing posts they saw on a meme accounts. And the latest is now reels, which just turned Instagram into meme app and TikTok copycat.
It has turned into such an annoying platform.

I was like drawing each day a lot of sketches, ideas just popped out in my mind like... a constant flow of creativity.. When i came back to my life, I went back to social media, etc. and all that flow of ideas started to drain again... It is a good point to analize, how social media and screens in general or constant exposure to shitty content (not all content of course) has affected our ability to enjoy the real world, human conections and experience and truly connect with our inner world.

As an introvert myself that has no real friends for about a year or 2 now. I fed on social media for alot of interactions ever since 2015 really but even more so in the past few years and I've personally had enough of alot of it.
Mainly because the feeling of insecurity of not feeling as good as others but more so the endless scrolling and wasting of time. When I could be exercising and bettering my body and doing stuff actually valuable with my time.
Like if I want entertainment then I'll watch more movies, play some video games and watch some UA-cam videos. I mainly used social media at first for personal friends I don't even have much to do with anymore and then making other online friends but it just felt fake to be honest.
So now I basically also quit alot of social media the only thing I guess you can class as social media that I personally use now is here on UA-cam but I say it's more as an entertainment service for me.
Since the videos I see alot of them are actually interesting and productive unlike Instagram, Twitter, Tik Tok etc... Plus with UA-cam I can actually leave my computer on and listen to free music as I pump up with some weights.
So I still actually get stuff done instead of just using my fingers scrolling on a screen. I don't even usaully comment on videos either but your video came up in my recommend feed and I feel you man.

I think I needed that 'shot in the arm' to remind me just how messed up sm is, and how quickly it's destruction is to our well being.
It reminded me of when you get out of a bad relationship, and after awhile of being apart, you miss the person. So in a moment of weakness you reach out and try to get back together, and almost instantly you rememebr why you got out of that relationship. Nothing had changed, but you forgot that.

It was that moment I realised that I was now a product of Instagram rather than being a producer of creativity; so goodbye Instagram. Good old fashioned word of mouth still works as well as using the free time away from social media to build and optimise my own website. Thank you for your insights.

I've had the opposite experience. I been off of social media now for a couple months and it has actually made me less creative to the point I don't even pick up my camera anymore because I feel like I have no incentive to take photographs anymore which just reinforces the thought that I've only been doing photography solely for the validation/likes and not because I enjoy it or because I have passion for it. I thought stepping away from social media would help me regain my passion for photography but it didn't, what it did was make me feel even more alone & depressed because I now have little to no social interaction, no friends or family and so I spend a lot of time alone and Instagram was a good way to connect with others but now that it's gone, I feel completely alone. So if you're considering quitting social media, think of the impacts it could have on your life.

Sorry to hear that, totally understand the validation and connection part of social media, but at the same time once the real social interactions from the platform started fading, you realise everything is fake. It gives a false sense of belonging. Focusing on photography or another hobby that gets you hyped without the need to get validation from others is where its at. I think I’ve felt a variation of that sort of copy cat mentality you’re talking about. I think i was motivated by engagement. I draw my own charas all the time and I’d see other ppl who’s oc’s got a lot of attention and often it was because they’d make funny memes or little comics w them. I thought it looked fun and I wanted ppl to engage w my work so I’d emulate it by making comics that were just funny or redraws from shows. And while it was kinda fun I began to realize that I didn’t want to make silly relatable content with these charas, I wanted to write an ACTUAL comic, I wanted to have actual story happening and not just these one off silly haha jokes. I wast drawing the things I wanted to draw. But I also wanted people to like them and I was sort of horrified with myself when I realized I was making stuff for other people and not myself. I thought I was above that and it was humbling and crazy to realize how easy it was to fall into.
Anyway, I’ve had no insta for… A week now? Really what I’m still trying to unlearn is the way I think when I draw. Like, “oh I’ll say THIS in the description and I’ll put THIS in my story” etc. I want to stop thinking about POSTING art - I want to just… make it, then maybe post it later. It’s hard to unlearn, it’s like I’m performing for an audience in my head before I even get there. Thanks for the video!

I completely understand where you're coming from! Since 2016, I've been sharing my ukulele and guitar videos on UA-cam and Instagram because I wanted to be part of that community. I wanted to showcase my skills and not just make music in isolation. Over the years, I found myself playing only what was popular and recording detailed tutorials just to get more views, even though I didn't enjoy speaking on camera. Last year, when I fell ill and couldn't upload videos for a long time, I felt obligated to explain to my viewers why I'd been away for so long. However, during my break, I realized how much I enjoyed playing music just for myself again, rather than constantly catering to my audience. Now, I try to find a balance between sharing what I've practiced and not practicing just to share something, like you mentioned, "make it, then maybe post it later"!

Also about the creativity you talked about ig and all others makes you feel like nothing you do is original and everyone has the exact same expiriences as you and etc that spirals into other problems too...

Gave up my addiction to Facebook in December. I used it almost exclusively for approximately 14 years. Last night I began exploring UA-cam for video discussions about the toxicity of social media platforms at large. The science is on point. The human brain isn't equipped to handle excessive amounts of time on social media platforms in a healthy manner. It's toxic and it's a shame. I hope that at some point this discussion is taken more seriously. We constantly hear about mental health (which is good), but very little time is spent discussing prolonged use of social media platforms. Social media has contributed to an alarmingly high rate of mental illness and we need to talk about it. Especially for the sake of future generations. In conclusion I leave you with some math. Let's say someone uses social media for an average of 3 hours a day. 3 hours is a conservative amount of time as compared to how many cumulative hours are spent on social media platforms, on average. Take those 3 hours and multiply that by 365. The total comes to 1,095 hours in the year. That's 45.625 days out of the year spent on social media platforms. Take 45.625 days and multiply that by 10. That brings you to 456.25 days spent on social media platforms in a 10 year period, which is 1.249 years. Call it a waste of a life, because that's exactly what it is. Even at just 3 hours a day. We can do better and we should do better. Thanks for the upload dude.

I'm definitely considering about deleting every social media I've been on over these years from my phone. I still have to decide if I'm gonna use them on browser from my computer, so it may be just a way out from daily distractions, or it's gonna be my first step to no longer be on internet. Personally, I've never been jealous of what other people are prone to show on instagram, 'cause currently being satisfied of myself is everything I care about and I know plenty of creators who look happier than me but deal with depression. Overtime I learnt to distinguish between what I need to be happy and what society told me about throughout my life.
    Be kind my english sucks.❤️

I'm getting the same feeling. I understand what it's like to be in a rut because I am experiencing it first hand, I think quitting social media will allow me to embrace my hobbies that I enjoy doing more because I won't have an easy distraction away from what I want to accomplish. Not only that but it will make me prioritise what is important instead of mindlessly scrolling through those apps

It was a random video that popped up and I thought “why not”. To my surprise within a few hours after watching it I deleted the instagram app. I kept telling myself “once I finish this project (I paint by the way) and post everything I’ll stay off the app.” And then of course I work on more then one project at once and I have the wips in the stories and the main image on my feed and and it was a constant cycle. For months I kept getting the idea I needed time to myself for myself and I wasn’t able to give myself that. I tried hiding it, I even put a time limit on the damn thing and once I found I can skip that, that became the new thing for me! For some reason the idea of just doing it, no date or time, no saying good bye for who knows long long just felt right. So in a way, thank you? 😅

It's hard for me to really change, even though I removed Instagram from my phone. I look for distraction. Now I use this time for gaming or youtube, which can have the same effect. Only removing the app will not solve the problem. For me, I really need to work on myself actively to be able to change and use that time for creativity. Social Media really made me feel that every hobby or project I start feels kind of useless because someone else already did it better. It's really hard to overcome, but realizing how bad my mental health is effected by this is the first step to getting better.

I deleted Facebook a year ago. I dont miss it at all. It became a chore.
I loved Twitter at first. I followed all of my fav rock bands and would just scroll for new albums, or tour info. Or seeing celebrities interactions. But it felt like politics took over the platform and most posts were about negative news. so I finally deleted that a few months ago.

If you are addicted to social networks, it's hard to do deep work, or any work. It's hard to keep your mood up to even attempt to exercise, or "find time" for it, and it also seems pointless to talk to opposite sex in real life. After all, you saw so many supermodels today. And your sleep is completely disrupted. So yeah, welcome to the circle of hell😅

We often believe that without others' approval, we are nothing. This mindset is a core issue facing society today, and it's exactly where the market sees an opportunity to profit by exploiting our vulnerability.

Yeah, I barely have used Instagram and Facebook the last few years. Facebook I have left more than once. Now and then I join in order to join a course group but I just deleted it again.
UA-cam is more addictive for me. And now also Medium! As a content creator it's hard to get away from it. We just need to practice more self discipline when it comes to habitual impulses! I'm not a fan if the dopamine rollercoaster ride!
I never watch UA-cam Shorts. Have no desire for them. I have created over 1000 lol but I will stop doing that now too. Don't want to be a contributor to the low attention span issues many struggle with today!

I wish I had this courage to do that. Social media have caused me burned out, anxiety, panic attacks, lose money, time, I losed precious years of my life. Big techs hook people. I fell on this trap many years ago. This road only goes to depression and losing of time. Time is life, time is not money. When you lose your time, you're losing your only real resource. 🎉🎉❤❤❤

Man this was spot on for me. I quit social media, hid my icons, became I got so sick of the same shit. Nothing but ads, political bashing, people using the same F’ing song. For example every girl who works out, has to use that song “unstoppable” 🙄 I was just so done. It really sets your mood and tone for the day and I have no hope for this younger generation who literally lives off social media and it’s their life. It’s just a waste of life killing your mood, creativity and attention span…. BTW, when I did post lived by “Post and ghost”. When I post, I don’t go back. For #1 there’s always going to be negative and hatful comments and you don’t need that in your life. One negative comment will erase the 20 positive comments. And #2, I want to get away from that needed validation. The more you look back to see who liked and commented, it’s easy to get addicted and sucked in and destroys that dopamine high by watering the feeling down where you’ll never reach that high again.

I think the biggest problem with social media is not whether you're copying or being original, that matters if I'm a content creator but the most important issue is the fact that when you see people having a lot of success, crazy vacations, beautiful relationships, yeah compare all of that with your own life and then you could feel depressed, empty, a failure, it hits your self-esteem, it hurts your feelings see beautiful, very attractive girls/women and know that you can't get into a relationship with someone like that, it's out of your possibilities, it makes it worse when you face rejection in person and then go to social media and face another impossible situation where you're not gonna get into a relationship with those hot girls/women you see on social media, it's killing you every day.
