This was one of the first things I had to learn when trying to draw, because I draw a lot of werewolves and shapeshifters. Canid hind legs are actually homologous to human legs if you were standing on your toes, and their stance is called digitigrade as opposed to our plantigrade stance. The hock is where our heel joint would be, and the paw is homologous to our toes and the ball of our foot.
Drawing animals is so hard... would you ever make a book on drawing animals?

A dogs thumb is on the inner side of the leg, and is more at or above the line between the leg and paw. Thank you mark, I've bean watching your videos for years. I'm always drawing horse like dogs and dogs like horses, in every respect including the front part. At least I can get the hind legs now, lol
OH my God, Mark Crilley, this is literally the best tutorial for animals ever. Seriously, whenever I draw the tutorials in books, it looks awful. So, more of these videos would be great!
So Mark, when your drawing a dog's paw you kinda have to give it claws because they don't retract like a cats. I was at some point told this I think. Still fun and informative though.
The reason that a horse has an extra joint compared to the dog is because they walk on the equivalent of nails, not just tiptoes.The extra joints are basically finger knuckles.
Honestly, for some reason, drawing the front legs are usually harder for me XD Mostly because I get confused on where to attach them
The shoulders, lol, just look at skeletons 3d images, it's quite simple actually, the shading and muscles that are hard to get just right
Lol ik, but on dogs and horses, the leg s are positioned in a way that's hard for me to draw lol
Anaya I agree! But to Maxi Iroh’s point what has helped me is looking at skeleton type diagrams of animals because then I can understand what’s going on under all the muscle and skin. Same for horse necks; the actual spine curve does not follow the shape we see in a horse’s neck so skeletons were instructive for me! Hope it helps?

Sensei...lol..I hope you see this...You are the first person who has made a bearing impression of art on my mind, I am a South African Otaku and manga enthusiast. Being a black student who doesn't have much in a country that doesn't really esteem art or is taken seriously by the international community in such finer pursuits...I wish i could buy your graphic novels and books one day, so i am currently studying law to become financially stable and help my family's financial state and support you in future, although i am drawing whenever i can...i wish i can meet you one day. Unfortunately there aren't that many art stores in SA, but i am working on my own comic book that i wish you would see in 2020...I know it is not the best nor is it perfect publishing material but when i finish it i'd like you to read it. The industry in this country isn't prominently big or strong (it's not an impoverished state but art isn't the main strength) and i'm just a little guy whose dream is to change that and make even Japan recognize the art potential we have. This country is my pride with it's infancy and developing stage...I want you to know that you're an inspiration to me and other aspiring artists who can only draw as a hobby for now because we have to work

Excellent tutorial! I always struggle when I try to draw the hind legs on horses, gonna try your tips! Those "lines" on the horse's legs are various tendons, ligaments, and bones by the way :)

dogs are digitagrade, which is the human equavalent of tiptoe, but in reality is the 'ball' of the foot, that large tough area behind the toes
Horses are ungulates, which is the human equivalent of 'en pointe' for a ballerina, which is in reality the actual tip of the toes, or rather in their case the toenail, that second knob you are looking at is the 'ball' of the foot

Fun fact: cats walk on their toes, so when you "declaw" them, you're removing their last digit/knuckle in their fingers.

The reality of the horse's leg is slightly more horrifying, it seems, than the dog's. What you would perceive to be the knee --the lower circle underneath the thigh-- is actually the ankle and the knee is up higher in the thigh. The rest on downward is all metatarsal/metacarpal (assuming front leg, and the lowest circle is a knuckle). Essentially they support themselves on a modified toe/finger, and what connects to the ground, their hooves, is just nail.
