We bought and lived in a 1974 Hanomag Henschel wohnmobil for 3-4 months in 1986. We worked in a furniture factory in Paderborn for the summer, found it for sale on the side of a local road, bought it cheap. Austin gas engine, burned valve, leaking fuel lines, engine cover with poor fitting seals. Fixed those things--among others with camper. Drove and camped around Europe until our money ran out. Returned to Paderborn and sold it to a group of university students to use on holidays. Wish we could have imported it to US. Drove it through E. Germany to Berlin. Arrived in late afternoon. Drove to campground after dark and backed into our camping spot up against a wall. Next morning, we were astonished to peer through a crack in the all and see no-man's land on the other side.
The engine is a Hanomag engine; you can see it on the small inside hood. In 1971 this type of Hanomag got a bigger hood but still with a Hanomag engine. Later in 1972 a MB engine was introduced, which meant less noise inside but more diesel and oil consumption.
