Mathieu, To avoid Lens Flare, try using the 7-14mm in 7mm mode with a cardboard tube to give you a longer lens hood. Yes, you will need to experiment to avoid the hood vignetting the image, but you'll find it does significantly reduce the flare, although you won't completely eliminate it in all scenarios. Thanks for the review, Rick
Very good review. Thank you. I have the 7-14mm and use it a lot. Have been considering the 8mm for those special times when it would be the right lens of choice, but many "reviews" were not very helpful. Yours is! Your sample shots show how and when the lens can be used effectively. Thanks again.
Hi there, 9 years after this video was uploaded. I updated my Oly equipment with the 12-40, the new 20 and the 40-150 PRO lenses (and the extra grip for the OM-5), and I just wanted to know which wide angle lens might be the better choice. You helped me to decide easily because fisheye is obviously not what I need despite the interesting examples you showed in the video. Thanks and cheers from Berlin
mmm... that 7-14 is a cat's meow! I know it goes for little over $1000. What I don't understand is that most will say that micro thirds lens are less expensive, but I am finding out that's not really the case. The Nikkor 12-24 4g goes for about the same price. I have that lens, which I take pics with my OMD M5 m2. I cant seems to get the focus peaking with the Nikkor lens though. Thanks for the post. great pictures.
Steve Ferneyhough I'll try to make a direct comparison between the two lenses if I find a Panasonic sample to test. I used the 7-14mm f/4 in the past a couple of times for both still and video work. From what I remember, the Panasonic has more distortion and more flares. But without comparing the same shots I can't confirm which one is better.
Hi , need help in choosing lens, between 8mm1.8 and 7-14mm2.8. 70%for astrophotography and 30 for landscapes. Does defishing 8mm in lightroom has any issiues? Am I loosing anything by defishing.
Thank you for the review, Mathiew! Hopefully, Olly 7-14 will be better built vs 12-40 which is a disaster. I've had 3 (!!!) 12-40 Ollys and they all had their plastic parts falling apart, not to mention a small gap in the barrel that shows the inner cable. Pro lens? This time, I hope.
Hi Mathieu. You are lucky! My 3rd one, being used as gently as a virgin, and only about 5 times, had its lens-hood just fallen apart into 3 pieces!!! The optics is fine, but, hey, Olympus, don't dare call this Pro lens. I am afraid of even touching 12-40 now, not talking about testing its splash and dust proof capabilities :o). Anyway, Mathiew, keep enjoying Olly products and doing your nice reviews. Cheers!
I do enjoy your reviews from both presenters. Please can you tell me the website name that you refer to (ends in essence?? maybe) because I can never hear it properly maybe an accent issue for me, many thanks, Rich.
Ignacio Artiñano the L-Fn button is a custom button on the lens that you can use to activate different settings. You can customise it in the camera menu.
Aside from aperture of 8mm fish eye, what is better choice? 7-14mm or 8mm? As 8mm is in range of 7-14mm. Just wondering which should be my next investment :)
mirwena Well it really depends on what kind of distortion you are looking for. I would recommend the fisheye lens only if you really want to take advantage of that particular 180° angle. Otherwise the 7-14mm is more versatile.
Thanks for your review! Is it possible to use 8mm 1.8 lense with gh-5 as an action camera with a camera helmet? Gopro freezing too often and I need something reliable. Size and weight is not important for me whhle filming important projects. Im afraid of distortion with 8mm fisheye. Will it make more problems then gopro 7 superview fisheye distortion?
I don't have experiences with the Gopro so I can't make a direct comparison. GH5 + 8mm as an action camera? Possibly, but difficult to say without testing it first hand. It would have to be well fixed on the helmet, and also understand if micro vibrations coming from the helmet can affect the GH5 IBIS or not.
@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons Thanks for your answer! I've already used it in this way with 7artisans 7.5 f2.8 and it was very nice. But I need something wider. Hope to try it with olympus 8mm 1.8 soon.
The Olympus 8mm is not wider in terms of angle of view, unless you mean the aperture. There is also the Laowa 7.5mm f2, which is not a fisheye, so not as wide but less distortions.
Thank you for the review of the first, one assumes, final production models. I know that these are available from B&H photo from June. I would definitely buy the 7-14mm. Any idea of the final prices for these two lenses? I imagine the 7-14mm will be well over $1000.

I'm not a huge fan of fishlens either but this 8mm creates interesting macro shots as you have demonstrated.

Mathieu Gasquet In order to focus my decision I've to say that Video is about 90% and stills 10%
The best review of that lens.
Thank you. :)

Hi Serge, I'm sorry to read about the 12-40mm build problems. Mine is doing fine and I did treat it badly more than once.

Great video review Mathieu. I am torn between getting the Panasonic 7-14mm or this new one from Olympus for my Panasonic G6. Both look impressive.
So the angle of view of the 8mm is 180 degrees? What is the angle of view on the 7mm?
114

As a Lumix GH4 owner and no Olympus glass, I do not know what the L Fn button is for and how to use it. As I see 7-17 should be my first glass option.

The L-Fn button will only work with Olympus cameras I'm afraid.

@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons I saw few reviews where olympus 7-14 compared to 8mm 1.8 fisheye. Horisontal field of view is much wider on 8mm fisheye.
I like your reviews Mathieu, I wonder if You have experience with the Samyang 8mm fisheye vs Oly in terms of optical quality ans usability?
I tried the 7.5mm f/3.5 fisheye at a photoshow years ago but never got a chance to use it in real world shooting. I hope to try it soon.
Thanks for this review, well done and informative. Will you be testing it on the GH4 as well?
I don't have a GH4 with me at the moment. I'll try them on the GH3 if I have time:)

BobToms100 Yes I have final production samples. The retail price in $1299.
Hello thanks for the video was great i have one question i just got the olympus 7-14 pro how do you do with the distortion on 7mm for videos ?
Do you mean perspective distortion? That is a natural characteristic of the lens.
Mathieu do you mind if I post your initial thoughts video on newsshooter.com?
Matthew Allard no problem Matthew. Can I just ask you to link back our website mirrorlessons.com as well? Thanks.
Why does the 8mm look "wider" or "more fisheye" than the 7-14mm at 7mm?
Because it gives you a 180 degrees angle of view. It is a different design.
When can I get my hands on these lenses?! So exciting!
bovver wonder They will be available in June.
Mathieu Gasquet According to Amazon, release date is Aug 1 but hopefully sooner than that!
That could be an error from Amazon. Fingers crossed ;)
Why are these lens so expansive~~~ T.T
