They used to make anvils in continental Europe that had a crowned face right next to the horn, supported by the base unlike the horn-I think it’s called a rhino anvil. They also made anvils with a sloped side on the edge of the face to help protect it from chipping (church windows anvils). They figured out a long time ago that neither the flat face nor the horn are ideal for drawing out metal.
