    I'm glad Fuji listens to the community after they release a camera, but it frustrates me that they don't really think things through BEFORE releasing their cameras. I always remember when they released the X-H2/S and they wanted to force users to set the aperture ring to A and not allow you to control ISO on the dials. It took months of yelling at them to get it fixed. Dumbest thing they've ever done.
    I was so excited about the film sim dial until I learned they didn't think about the community and don't allow us to use each film sim slot as a custom recipe. The camera is absolutely capable of keeping individual settings, all Fujis do it with C1-C7, either through a dial or menu system. They just dropped the ball once again.
    The X-T50 is not really a beginner camera, not at that price point and feature set. They should've treated it more like an enthusiast camera and allow us to save our recipes on the dial.
    I would be all over that camera if it was weather resistant too. Any camera above $1000 should be able to take some rain. Maybe the X-T60 (all cameras should be WR, honestly) will be WR but who knows.

    The reason I chose Fuji is because I hate going into menus. I love the concept of the dial and think it could be improved as you are describing. Unfortunately the lack of vertical tilt screen and weather sealing make this particular camera a no go for me, however, if it were to find it’s way on to the XT6…shut up and take my money.

    I'm a long time X-Txx user and I just can't see the point of a dedicated Film simulations dial. The drive dial made much more sense , as next to no one changes the film simulations so often that it would require a special dial for that. When I feel like doing art, I just swipe left on the LCD of my X-T30 mk. II to bring up the film simulations menu, and then I use the back roller to quickly go through all the film simulations. Or you could use any of the programmable buttons to do the same thing. With the X-T50, you get a dedicated film simulations dial that can't be (so far) programmed to do anything else, so it sort of feels like a waste of space. Also, having a dedicated drive dial means you can quickly change to high/low speed burst mode, panorama, multiple exposure mode, video mode... without going into any menus, which is much more useful than having the right film simulation for the occasion. Afterall, when you shoot raw+jpeg you can always change the film simulation in post.

    • @-grey
      @-grey 3 місяці тому +5

      I have literally never used the drive dial. I don't change film sim that much either. I'd rather it was just a blank customisable one for a bunch of options.

      An ISO dial would have been preferred, but if each dial sim is allowed to be customized individually via firmware update, then we would have 11 more recipes that we could save. This would make the sim dial much more useful for those of us who use recipes exclusively and not the default sims.

    I think that the best way for Fujifilm to implement it is to keep the way it works for all the markings directing to any specific film sim, but allow use to change custom settings (C1, C3 to C7) with the FS1, 2 and 3 positions on the dial. That way you have your vanilla Fuji film sim, the FS1 2 and 3 for your custom recipes that you want to recall often, and then the C position fow when you need to access any otf the other 4 custom settings.

    Although it's not preferred, the way Fuji has implemented the dial makes sense. As you pointed out, the other camera has specific 'C'ustom options to save recipes. What would have been better is if Fuji left the film simulations in a menu and added custom simulations to the dial. It's a hardware problem, not necessarily software (though an option to change this feature in the camera settings would be appreciated). What I've been begging for, for over five years, is to allow users to save / sync their custom recipes in the Fuji X app. Maybe even have an API for FujiXWeekly to sync with the Fuji App.

    Agree, a bit of a missed opportunity. I’d love to see in a FW update soon. At a high vantage point, I always thought Fuji should have made their 1-7 Custom slots on the XS/XH series be agnostic a-la Sony’s recent unmarked (Exp Comp) dials… Imagine If Fuji created an easy selector switch under the left Custom dial with Sims, Custom, and Recipes as the 3 options (21 options overall)… it would make it both flexible and fun. Or just have an A, B, C selector enabling you to take the 7 slots to infinity and beyond! :D. One can dream! I think the Film Sim dial is great for the intended audience, I was a bit surprised in your recent caffeinated video (which was epic!) that Fuji limited the dials to that degree. Have loved your recent uploads Omar… stay being you!

    • @grafixnetz
      @grafixnetz 3 місяці тому +1

      The X-S20 does have an unmarked left dial that comes preset with the ability to roll thru their sims. But one can reprogram that to something more useful. I'm happy having the sim in the q menu. I guess Fuji liked the idea so much they said "Hey, for the X-T50, let's make this dial marked and only for our sims".)

    I asked for this since day one. And I met the Fuji representatives at a local dealer event and asked them to do this.
    So I see a few options here:
    - Per each film simulation keep the clarity, highlight, shadows, chrome, noise reduction, etc. etc. (what you also said)
    - If Fuji wants to insist on keeping the dial selections "pure" then they should at least do this for the FS1, FS2, FS3 slots
    - Another option is to make a menu option to allow for this or use the shipping default behavior (i.e. what they do now vs saving settings per film selection)
    I am more inclined for at least the 2nd option as adding a menu option hidden somewhere seems to me makes things just more complicated, but I am ok with they chose that and they strongly feel the default should be only the film.
    I don't think we are going to see them allowing for general customization of this dial for any function given the "strong UI language" to the user of a dial with a setting, but maybe allow that for the FS1, FS2, FS3 slots. We can say they are "Function Specialization 1... 2.. 3.. " :-)

    I have had several Fuji bodies and usually I've set things up where the rear jog dial press brings up the film sims...then I just scroll the same wheel with my thumb to go through all the sim modes. I'd argue that this is easier than having that seperate film sim knob. (When not pressed, it's used to change the aperture for lens that don't have a dedicated aperture ring).

  • @brownbear100
    @brownbear100 3 місяці тому +1

    Basically, you'd like the dial to be a custom settings dial instead. Think there's a lot that agree with that.
    The thing is, the film sim is just one ingredient. Sugar is always sugar, salt is always salt, provia is always provia.
    So what happens when you are in C1-7 (there no option to not be in a custom setting) and you want to change the film SIM ingredient on the fly. You can already do this in the Q menu, or clicking whatever fn button you have allocated to film sim, or the dial in the x-t50.
    But if your film sim dial doesn't just change to the film SIM, but to a tweaked version of it, that's going to mess with your custom settings.

    The dial is interesting, but it should be on a cheaper model. Something for beginners. At that price point, the X-T50 should be aimed at committed users who would like something more useful. If the entire dial were custom simulations, it would make much more sense. It would be better than going into the menu to look for C1, C2, C3, etc. Alas, your suggestion is definitively an improvement.

    Nice! It's surprising that Fuji didn't initially consider this feature.
    There is another aspect that could be improved. We can edit JPEGs in-camera by adjusting film recipes, shadows, highlights, etc., but this process is complex, making it difficult for users to understand what's happening with the image. What if, while viewing a picture, users could adjust JPEG settings simply by turning a simulation dial? It would be an easy, quick, and intuitive way to change your recipe for a specific image.
    Just
    - view image
    - turn dial
    - hit okay

However a recipees dial would make the camera outsell x100vi. Also keep the C and make the numer of Q programs ”endless” we dont need a fixed number, we need to be able to add as many recipes as we want…meaning we should be able to load the whole fuji weekly database into the camera.

    I think Fuji definitely need to re-think their custom modes, while they're now similar to other brands - they previously created this expectation that custom modes were just about JPG settings, but have since allowed all manner of operational camera settings (drive mode, focus etc) to also be saved in those slots. Simplest option does seem to be splitting these apart - move those JPG settings into each film sim, and leave custom modes to just manage the operational settings. Similar to Nikon's picture controls - which also allow saving/loading from a memory card.

    Second your idea - if, of course, the FS1-FS3 positions functions like it as well.
    With it, you can separate the film simulation from the C positions on the menu - which are much more useful to store settings for shooting scenarios (today, if you use the C custom positions to store shooting settings - portrait, action, street, etc - you are locked into a recipe).
    This is the problem that I current have in the X-S20 - if I put C1 with a concert shooting parameters (shutter above 1/250, burst mode, etc) with a Provia recipe and want middle shotting change the film recipe quickly: no way.

    Welcome to the world of coding my friend:)
    A better idea is simply allow X_T50 folk to store recipes in F1-3. That gives them 3 of their own stuff. Imagine being able to bracket or shoot video using your own recipe.
    However, for the rest of us Fuji folk (I have the X-H2 and X-S10) This will revolutionize Fuji for ever for recipe lovers!
    Simply allow us to REPLACE some of their standard sims with our own recipes. I NEVER use the 4 monochrome sims, for instance. That's 4 slots for my stuff.
    (You'd have to rewrite X-RAW studio to do this) Instead of saving to one of the precious custom settings, our recipes will act just like the others; we can simply chose one whenever we want. (We could also add our own short descriptions😅).
    On the X-S20 the custom settings include *everything* from recipe to shooting mode, to focus mode (not available on cameras with that switch:(): I have C4 set to birds in flight. When I need it I simply turn to C4 and fire away. Imagine being able to use *any* sim, including our own. C3 is my own B/W mode but that's a waste of a custom setting if I can dial in my B/W recipe instead.
    Get my drift? PLEASE pass this along.

    It is really cute. Shame it doesn't have a selfie screen. You'd think the people who'd want a film sim dial would want to see themselves while taking selfies. That's one of the core functions a phone still can't provide: use the best lens while seeing yourself.
    Either way, I bought in at the X-T2 for a cheaper, smaller than full frame system, which could keep up in terms of image quality and AF. Currently, they don't make many cameras much smaller than the smaller full frame options, or significantly cheaper than the entry level options either, and their AF is stuck in last decade so the entry level from Canon and Sony are already a bit better value just for the tech. It is a frustrating time to own XF lenses. 😂
    I wish they'd make a camera no taller than the mount, with IBIS and a flip up selfie screen for under $1000 at least, then I could forgive missing the shot a bit more. I'd even take a plastic X-A8 at this point, tbh.

    Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, but the film sim dial behaves exactly like the top left dial does on the X-S10 and X-S20, except on those cameras, it can be reprogrammed to a variety of different functions and isn’t specifically labeled or coded. All Fujifilm has done here is taken the film sim menu - which has always been assignable to a button (the left D-pad button on the X-T5 is mapped to it by default, for instance) - and put it on a dedicated dial. Scrolling through the film sim menu has never changed highlights, shadows, clarity, white balance, or anything else - just the film sim. The custom setting slots - typically seven of them - allow you to save almost all of these settings in conjunction with a specific film sim. That’s how you customize each sim to your liking. Does the X-T50 lack those slots? If so, that’s a major oversight.

    Honestly, I was expecting an X-S20 spec with classic controls. I am sorry, I fail to see the point of the film simulation dial. At least, not before you address the fundamentals of the exposure triangle: aperture, shutter, and ISO. Therefore, I would have preferred an ISO dial.

    Thanks for all your videos and good work, Omar! I love it! 🤟 So, what about this camera? I'm disappointed . I've an X-E3 and want to upgrade. I set the film simulation once and for all. The space here is wasted on the X-T50 and could have been used for ISO. Built-in flash is also a waste. Then to the design in general. I don't like the sloping angles on the top of my X-E3 and this is a reason alone to upgrade. The X-T50 slopes all over and the wheels on top also appear to slope. Unfortunately, the camera looks amateurish and seems having very little tactile feel. The rest of the camera looks OK and technically it is a major progress compared to its predecessors. I'll just have to wait until the X-PRO4/5 arrives (or buy a used X-PRO2/3 while waiting). Sorry.
    The changes you suggest will however help people who like to change their appearance all the time. But who are they really? Yawn 🙂

    Well, that fix would still be inferior I think. You would only be able to have a single set of custom settings for each film sim and thus still need to use "C" to get multiple recipes for a single film sim. IMHO, it is still a bonkers decision to have that film sim dial. But I guess Fuji thinks it will sell, else they wouldn't have done it.

    As a long time fan and user of the XS10 and now XS20, I am so confused with the XT50. The XS10/20 has the "same dial" on the left. By default it rotates across the fujifilm recipes....besides having the icons painted on the dial how is the XT50 dial any different or new?
    Basically everyone just wants a dial that is fully customizable with prob 7 presets they can rotate around with....they all might as well just get the XS20 if they are on a budget or spend big with the XH2S (I think that has the dials with most custom presets)
    I am just really struggling to see the point of this XT50 when it's only 300 dollars less than the XT5 and not as capable as the XS20.

    For a user like me, who primarily shoots raw, the film simulation dial is a complete waste. The drive dial is excellent on the X-T30ii, I use it all the time. It's even better than the drive dial on the X-T5, because it has two bracket choices vs. one. I would have thought the X-T50 was more for manual shooters, and the X-S20 was more for casual shooters, so I don't understand why they did this on the X-T50. A big disappointment for me. Not to mention, they didn't upgrade the battery.

    • @JackBurton-qp4hc
      @JackBurton-qp4hc Місяць тому

      You don't understand why Fujifilm would put a Unique Selling Point of their cameras on a dedicated dial? You may not like it, but is it absolutely understandable why they did so!
      The battery remains due to its size. Large means larger camera. I wouldn't want a large grip like the X-S20 to accommodate the larger battery and you'd have to redesign the internals of the X-T50 to such an extent you'd end up with an X-T5 sized camera, making it pointless.

    • @stephenschmid492
      @stephenschmid492 Місяць тому

      @@JackBurton-qp4hc The X-S20 shows they can design a smaller camera than the X-T5 with the bigger battery. I would actually prefer the bigger grip. The reason I said I didn't understand what they did is because I thought the X-T30 was aimed at people who liked more complete and easier-to-access manual control over the camera's functions. Elimination of the drive dial does not seem consistent with that. How often do you change the film simulation during a shooting session? For me, almost never. How often do you change the drive setting? For me, all the time.

    • @JackBurton-qp4hc
      @JackBurton-qp4hc Місяць тому

      @@stephenschmid492
      While you would prefer the bigger grip to accommodate the battery, others do not. All cameras are a compromise and I am willing to lose a dial that I don't use and retain the smaller body with 40mpix and IBIS. I'll press the dedicated button to change drive.
      The larger, heavier, X-T5 is clearly aimed at you as don't mind the size and weight due to the larger battery and it also has all the dials and controls you desire. The X-S20 isn't aimed at casual shooters, it is for hybrid shooters. Fuji retained the 26mpix as it has faster sensor readout for video shooters and also added the later, faster X-Trans processor.
      Since the X-T30 upgrade path is the X-T5, the X-T50 is primarily marketed at *NEW* users. When marketing you don't bury your USP in a menu.
      Those users are looking at an ILC version of the X100VI and the X-T50 is going to sell like hot-cakes precisely because of that dial, the new Fuji film simulation website and new apps.
      Fuji selling a lot of cameras benefits us all. You have simply outgrown the X-Txx line and Fuji are not marketing it to you anyway. Get the X-T5 and be happy.
