got the quansheng uk5/8 the other week great little radio , airband reception is toss but i think the firmware upgrade sorts it . good vid fred looking forward to the next one.
I use this as an excellent all in one scanner, with the 0.21 Egzumer mod: I listen to the airband (CLEARER than my actual flying radio), to CW on 28.025 to 030 on the USB, to all the CB band on FM, AM and USB, and the vhf ham repeaters, as well as the PMR which I programmed. For fun I transmitted on the commercial FM radio with the Fagci mod which lets you transmit on any frequency (of corse as you mention it is useless with all the harmonics…). Spectrum mode is a good scan alternative for singling out the peak station. Memory scan is very fast! Frequency s an is correct.
I also don't have anyone at home to reply on range tests, so I've set up openrepeater OS on a raspberry pi and made a "Kenwood" cable connecting to a USB sound card so I can activate parrot (DTMF 1#) so I can hear my transmission repeated back.
Just purchased a quangsheng uvk58 and programing cable. I don't have a ham licence but want to use it solely as a handheld scanner. Looking forward to the chirp vid as I've never used it before. A firmware flash vid would be good too for us newbies..... keep safe pal, cheers.

Hi. I think the Thunderpole is good value compared to the Alan 42 but they really do not work that well unless you take them DX. We are all too spread out these days.
I commented on on of their videos showong it off that its just a rebranded quansheng and well funny enough that video disappeared also someone was asking if the "maker" of that video as they referred to them as could make changes in the radio and i replied "Its a Quansheng UVK5 i recommend looking online for a tutorial to modify said radio" and i get greeted by a reply calling me an idiot, that was fun well i replied back "Ignorance is bliss" and boy did that get the person riled up they were calling me all sorts of names.

I believe pressing the A/B button for a second or two also does the same as using F + 2 (with the ezgumer firmware it does, not really sure with the stock firmware).
In the USA, where a ham can modify a radio anyway one likes I plan on modifying the internal filters to put a couple of UV-K5's on 10 meters and perhaps 6 meters instead of 2 meters and 70 cm. A TinySA and a NanoVNA and a handful of SMT inductors and caps and it's magically a different radio. Should be fun.

Have you got your hands on the original Quansheng uv-k5? Would be interesting if you did and share some thoughts comparing both models. Everybody keeps saying they are the same, but are they...? I feel that Retevis, being a respected brand shouldn't fall behind when they clone radios...
I think other channels will prob do compares. Some people are saying that they are the same. It would be hard to call without totally stripping each radio down. Only thing i say for Retevis is that you get a 30 day money back if your not happy with it.
I can't transmit with this radio on PMR. I enabled TX on every frequency. I can hear my other walkie-talkie transmitting but it doesn't receive anything back. Why??
270 cm should correspond to 111 MHz. Should I expect this radio to transmit somewhat decently in the Marine VHF frequency span 156-162 MHz (about 192 - 185 cm wavelength)? Maybe with a suitable 1/2 or 1/4 fraction wavelength antenna (94 cm or 47-ish cm long)
@@CB-RADIO-UK Thank you for responding. I guess the major frequency limitation is inside the radio and not in the antenna. Is my antenna length estimation optimal for the marine band, or are there something I totally misunderstood about frequency/wavelength vs. antenna length?
Hi I have a Retevis rt23. I have had it nearly a year and havnt heard a thing on it. Indoors I get about 4 bars of static. The bars only drop when I put squelch on. Not sure how to get fm on it either
@@CB-RADIO-UKEven though I can't stand the menu system on the Yaesu HTs (or Yaesu in general) it is the one thing they really get right: the dual volume and vfo knob. Appreciate the video. This is a really interesting set of radios... I'm more inclined to think of them as an HT platform at this point.
When you say don’t use this for CB, are you talking about the HF 27MHz band? Half the reason I just bought one of these is so I can use it on UHF 476MHz. Will this still be fine?
Hi. Is that Australia CB ?. I ve not gone higher that 446 but it should transmit although the power will prob reduce. It would help if you could find a SMA fit antenna for that freq.
@@CB-RADIO-UK yup, this is for Australia. I didn’t consider that the transmit power might reduce, but we’ll see how we go and I’ll report back. Thank you for the reply! P.S. I also have a Nagoya NA-771 copy on the way as well.
not anymore, up till about 5 years ago they used around 456 paired with 462MHz or 453 with 459 on the drive through radios. i think they moved to around 800MHz
Why is 270 cm (111 MHz) described as UHF? Isn't UHF correctly described as "The UHF band comprises the range 470-790 MHz and is used for the transmission of various digital terrestrial television (DTT) channels and for wireless microphones in all EU Member States."
When I google 2 meter 70 cm I get results that make me believe that this is two different wavelengths and not 270 cm wavelength. 70 cm corresponds to 428.275 Mhz and 2 meters (200 cm) corresponds to 149.900 MHz. I don't know for shure what is right
@@CB-RADIO-UK i want a radio that can be used as a walkie talkie and has a strong signal, also i go up the hills so one that works in that environment, as well as one that can work in the city. i have already bought this : Baofeng UV-17Pro GPS Walkie Talkie 108-130MHz Air Band VHF UHF 200-260MHz 350-355MHz FM Radio Six Bands Freq Copy Waterproof and this one : Baofeng AR 152 Ham Radio High Powerful CS Tactical .. just waiting for them to get delivered

Hi. Yes antenna shown in this video. ua-cam.com/video/DwE5rg8-95M/v-deo.html
Fred, seriously now , I don't care what they're doing with these mods , they are not a Yupiteru , I think they're as deaf as my great great gran
I can't transmit with this radio on PMR. I enabled TX on every frequency. I can hear my other walkie-talkie transmitting but it doesn't receive anything back. Why??
CTCSS codes switched on one radio and not matched on the other maybe.
14:52 did I just hear 8 out of 10 cats?😅
back in stock at AMAZON UK
Good news
Fred show us your face for 2024 ... Oh common in all fairness. Great video tho. I am waiting my quansheng to arrive... 73s
Nice one Jimmy. Look at the 42 year net video.
@@CB-RADIO-UKwhat do you mean ? 😊
Watch my 42 year CB net video :-)
270 cm should correspond to 111 MHz. Should I expect this radio to transmit somewhat decently in the Marine VHF frequency span 156-162 MHz (about 192 - 185 cm wavelength)? Maybe with a suitable 1/2 or 1/4 fraction wavelength antenna (94 cm or 47-ish cm long)
In theory it should work on the marine band. However its not tested.
My biggest gripe about this and the Quansheng: no VFO knob.
Yeah. Mind you i cannot think of any 2m70cm handheld which is not button driven.
Hi, usbc conector is only for charge
Just bought one from aliexpress cost me ?10.28... yup cheap going to download firm update tomorrow 👍👍
Wow that is just crazy cheap !
so funny the clone stuff and the real deal, and i think the Clone stuff is as good
When you say don’t use this for CB, are you talking about the HF 27MHz band? Half the reason I just bought one of these is so I can use it on UHF 476MHz. Will this still be fine?
Hi. Is that Australia CB ?. I ve not gone higher that 446 but it should transmit although the power will prob reduce. It would help if you could find a SMA fit antenna for that freq.
@@CB-RADIO-UK yup, this is for Australia. I didn’t consider that the transmit power might reduce, but we’ll see how we go and I’ll report back. Thank you for the reply! P.S. I also have a Nagoya NA-771 copy on the way as well.
It picks up CB great.
Will be testing that in the future.
What would I want this radio for? Just to chat with friends?
You can do that on PMR but most people mod the radio with Egzumer and use it as a wide band scanner. ua-cam.com/video/xmdqjA02NQc/v-deo.html
Will it communicate with mcdonalds i want a Aberdeen angus burger 😂
not anymore, up till about 5 years ago they used around 456 paired with 462MHz
or 453 with 459 on the drive through radios. i think they moved to around 800MHz
You’ll be wanting Burger King for the Aberdeen Angus!
Why is 270 cm (111 MHz) described as UHF? Isn't UHF correctly described as "The UHF band comprises the range 470-790 MHz and is used for the transmission of various digital terrestrial television (DTT) channels and for wireless microphones in all EU Member States."
Yes i would have thought that 111 MHz would be VHF ?
When I google 2 meter 70 cm I get results that make me believe that this is two different wavelengths and not 270 cm wavelength. 70 cm corresponds to 428.275 Mhz and 2 meters (200 cm) corresponds to 149.900 MHz. I don't know for shure what is right
Hiya Fred. Currently sold out on AMAZON on this date of my post. 73's
Yeah they sold out even before i got my video out. Still in stock at the main Retevis site.
Press and hold 2 and it will switch a/b
hi fred, can you give me some advice about radios ?
Which type you thinking of.
@@CB-RADIO-UK i want a radio that can be used as a walkie talkie and has a strong signal, also i go up the hills so one that works in that environment, as well as one that can work in the city. i have already bought this
: Baofeng UV-17Pro GPS Walkie Talkie 108-130MHz Air Band VHF UHF 200-260MHz 350-355MHz FM Radio Six Bands Freq Copy Waterproof
and this one
: Baofeng AR 152 Ham Radio High Powerful CS Tactical
.. just waiting for them to get delivered
i just watched your video on Quansheng UV-K5 8, and it has a spectrum with squelch function, looks very helpful
im looking at this one as well: HAMGEEK APX-8000, as it looks very rugged
As for the hills i would think about a large antenna you could set up. You can make a slim jim 2m 70cm wire antenna. Or maybe one of these. ua-cam.com/video/wz3grcj6OLs/v-deo.html
Hi Fred, unrelated but have you done a video on how to use the Software for the CRT SS 7900/9900 radios? I just bought the new 7900v Turbo and had it all opened up for CB band etc but went to input my call sign and a single tone roger bleep Viz the software and somehow I've wiped/reset the radio 😩
did you have rhe 2023 version? i have the same issue, can't disable Bands.. qnd i have the new 2023 version... its a software thing i think...
@@stefando1ass yeah mate, spoke to Knights as they have my order details and they are emailing me my settings over the gonna take it from there, I never changed anything but my call sign instead of the 7900v and a single roger bleep as the standard wanks are mince, the rest of the radio and it's settings where perfect, wrote to radio and poof, radio all reset 😩
Hi. No ive never had to re program my 6900 or 9900. There was a few guides on YT on the 6900
@@CB-RADIO-UK awww bummer, no worries Fred thanks for getting back to me buddy 👍🏻
Hey Fred, would you know the internal size of memory? Does it have 512kb or less? Thank you
No sorry i dont.
@CB-RADIO-UK thanks Fred, is there a way to find out size of internal memory somehow?
You could try after sales support. Just say Fred in the shed sent you :-) www.retevis.com/contactus?srsltid=AfmBOoo28zny0siiPaVauJAYlfjiUwEINEHgEiyh5Hqr3giVU_OHk8f-
Billy no mates 😂😂
They haven't cloned it, it's just a rebadged Quansheng.
PMR is limited to 0.5w and your only allowed to use a device with a fixed antenna.
Yes your correct on the power. Now the antenna part might not be so clear. I thought it was a fixed antenna but a few people have said that has changed.
@@CB-RADIO-UKThat radio in the video has a removable antenna. On PMR you can’t use a device with a removable antenna.
@@CB-RADIO-UKSpecifically; Any device with an antenna connector fitted.
PMR446 is limited to 0.5w ERP, thats output, times antenna gain or loss, plus feeder loss
Well that is the dark side LoL, yes legally you need to have fixed antenna and 0,5Watt Max effect (in Sweden at least). But if you are careful and show respect nobody gets really harmed, and nobody seems to care.
Please do not use for PMR 5W!!!
Sorry about that.
Why not?
@@davidhooper1767 Because the maximum allowed power output on PMR446 is 0.5W?
@@irreverend_ Who cares? I don't and thousands of others either.
@@davidhooper1767 Someone probably cares. Anyway, that might not be why they said not to, I was just guessing that's why they left the comment
Would one of you kind persons point me in the right direction for an adapter from the radio to the telescopic antenna please. 🙏

Certainly will.
I gave up cheap radio
can it hear police fire ambo?
No thats all encrypted :-(
thanks - can it receive 131.300mhz AM with mod done?@@CB-RADIO-UK
Some times the fire uhf is analogue, ch1to 8 dmr 9 to 16 analogue at a larger incident you'll get the both in use sometimes at 450.1 and then 457 462 mhz area
I continue to get scan fail when I scan the channels can anyone help please
Better with frog roger bleep
It's a quansheng at treble the price !!!! and a clone at that !!!!
Depends what you want really. You get a 30 day money back along with 1 yr guarantee. I ve bought cheap baofeng clones which arrived DOA and no chance in getting my money back.
@@CB-RADIO-UK at treble the price I'd expect a guarantee but at a third of the price I'd take a chance I've got an original and it's fine especially after flashing it
