My quansheng K5(8) will transmit from 13mhz to 1300mhz but you are right, on 27mhz you are looking at less than 10mw output.
On 446mhz you will get 3.5w, all radios are optimised for 435mhz on the UHF band, the baofengs are the same and even my home base which will do 50w vhf and 40w on 435 does 30w on 446..
Don't delay on flashing the custom firmware, forget the expanding of the frequency range , its the vastly better firmware that is desirable, the egzumer firmware is the best .
I have to pick a bone, Dont call CTCSS privacy codes, they are nothing of the sort and offer no privacy at all, everyone can still hear you, you just Dont hear everyone else, its just a squelch control system.

From the factory they are 3.5w on 440, but some of the reflashes also adjust tx up to
      just over 5w

Bought the quangsheng uv5r8 a couple of months ago, cost just under 12 quid delivered. Have run it alongside baofeng uv82's on 446 and 433 MHz and it works a treat. Can hit a repeater at about 8 miles off from my nearest high point and have had contacts up to Sheffield, Bury st Edmunds and Norfolk. Yes admittedly some of these contacts are using zello or some other black magic but as a free standing handheld it's pretty good. I'm in Rutland by the way so to be able to talk across 60 to 80 miles or more is out there. I don't quite get the net radio stuff but to be able to use a bog standard walkie and talk to guys at that distance however it works is brilliant. I have a licence but limited equipment so some of the PMR and 11m are easier to get in touch with. My wife thinks I'm a right anorak despite the fact that I played in punk/hardcore bands for 25 years and ride motorcycles. Radio is a unique and underrated hobby. And it's useful should other systems fail. Thank you for your videos and tips.

Hi Dave. LOL my wife thinks the same. Radio is a bit of an odd hobby in 2024 but it does no harm. Amazing cheap radio you bought and good to know it worked well.

Yep, i understand and if SHTF (shit hits the fan), everything goes black, then that is your only communication setup and I've used it a UV K5(8) with a Baofeng on free PMR, this time low power and it works like a charm indeed. Dunno if it exceeds the 0,5 watt limit ?

Cheer's Fred, that review really helped, I've got a clone version coming in the mail, ordered it a couple of weeks ago. I really only wanted to use it as a cheap, versatile but flashable kinda wide enough band, scanner. I was glad to hear that you gave it the thumbs up as a decent scanner in your review plus the FYI of the longer antenna to help receiving. I'm not hardcore into radio's so all this advice helps a rookie like me. I am going to steer clear of the transmit side of things as once I mod it, with the situation here, i do not want to cross over into the Dark Side in that respect. But the feature is there if the need is required down the track. Lookin' forward to the programming how-to video next! 📻 🙃 👍

Tnx for the review! I used to play with cb in the '90's and built multi element quad beam antennas reaching out 75+ miles using just 4 watts! So much fun!
Been doing deep dives on the HAM scene and wow...hooked!
This radio is tops on my list but def plan on building antennas again! Chipset on this radio unlocked allows rx/tx all over the bands!
    Tnx from Virginia, USA!

Great introductory video as always for people wanting to expand on their radio interest.
If it’s the better accompanying manual you wanted, I get it, but at £30, I’d be wanting x2 of these.
Can’t see any point in paying £30 for a better guarantee, at £15…I’d just flash it and lash it, and buy another if needs must.
Cloning…I don’t think that would happen.
Boafeng might fight back with their own wide band chip version though.

I use this as an excellent all in one scanner, with the 0.21 Egzumer mod: I listen to the airband (CLEARER than my actual flying radio), to CW on 28.025 to 030 on the USB, to all the CB band on FM, AM and USB, and the vhf ham repeaters, as well as the PMR which I programmed. For fun I transmitted on the commercial FM radio with the Fagci mod which lets you transmit on any frequency (of corse as you mention it is useless with all the harmonics…). Spectrum mode is a good scan alternative for singling out the peak station. Memory scan is very fast! Frequency s an is correct.

I have argued so many times with people about the frequency ranges in radios. Sre some radios can be opened up to listen to frequencies well outside what they are supposed to. Just because you can hear a frequency doesn't mean you you can successfully transmit on those se frequencies!

When you say don’t use this for CB, are you talking about the HF 27MHz band? Half the reason I just bought one of these is so I can use it on UHF 476MHz. Will this still be fine?
