- Or the new Glasgow 'electronic' scene. Whatever. You heard it here first.
Big thanks to @attackreleaseglasgow and all of the artists featured for lending me their faces, voices, videos, and music.

I post all of the music I make, including WAV stems; sample packs; Dirtywave M8 song bundles; collections of video textures; early access to videos; and a whole pile of other stuff on Patreon. I know I know, I hate doing this as well, but if you like what I do and want to get more of it, while also helping me offset some of my ludicrous gear purchases, this is the best place to do it:

Spot the mistake.
Hey, it's experimental electronica. Who's to say what's a mistake?
Cassini Division on the 31th :)
awesome wee documetary.
I'll need to try and come along some night but public transport from Glasgow to my town (cumbernauld) is a fkin nightmare, the last bus is like 11pm or some shite so it would need to ba a £30 taxi home
there's no way I'd be going to a night like this and not havin a swally so the car is out of the question.
There are no mistakes-only portals of discovery
No pizza was sampled.
Yah called Izaak American. His Zed pronunciation says Canadian to me.
A great reminder to love your local scene, and that all you need to do to create one is participate and appreciate each other.
100%. Music is more than UA-cam, but don't tell anybody. Shh.
First off, what a banger.. I love how this mini-doc came together, it was so cool hearing from folks in your area and to see such a killer local scene form around electronic music! Great editing as always and I really enjoyed getting to hear some of the acts too. So cool you've been secretly putting this together the past few months. I've always wanted to visit Scotland, now even more, Attack Release in Glasgow would be one of my first stops! 🐀
When you make it out here I'd be pulling strings to get you on the bill!!!
This is so inspiring, some people dream of performing in front of thousands of people, but I think performing or even just being in a smaller but dedicated and supporting community is not any less unique and beautiful and I'm glad it's becoming a thing, thanks for making this video
100%. Having 30 people that are dead into what you are doing and interested is far better than playing to 200 that don't care. Thanks for taking a look!
Good to see. One of Scotland's original synth pioneers here.
I'm about forty years too late. Glasgow was my home city for the first two decades of my life. Whenever I go back I always feel a certain vibe that I've felt nowhere else (except maybe San Francisco in 2008, before the crash.)
What I always loved about Glasgow was the people's willingness to have a go at anything. When I moved to Edinburgh it was all cliques within genres, and musicians seldom wanted to step out of their comfort zone.
Thanks for taking the time to check it out! Whereabouts in the world are you these days?
SF is still alive! Gen Z and the queer community are organizing underground raves throughout the city. Grey Area and shops like Mission Synths are still holding events big and small. I’m sure there are other events that I’m not aware of but we’re still here!
@@StephenMcLeod I am the resident wizzerd of East Lothian!
@ Glad to hear it! I loved my few days there.
This looks like such a nice scene. The variety of stuff and how it's all welcome just looks awesome.
Yeah! Lots of nice folks about and a genuinely welcoming approach to new and often freakishly weird stuff.
Thank you for making/sharing this… I used to be part of a collective in New York City, where I performed every three months or so for a couple of years… It was fantastic! I soooooo miss such scenes in NYC. 😢 perhaps it means I’ll have to start something up with a friend or two. Either way, keep it going! ❤ 🐜
Brilliant vid - will def be getting myself down to A/R more often in 2025. This is the kick up the arse that I need. Top stuff!
You definitely should come along more!
Great, now I’m nostalgic for a monthly I’ve never been to! 😋
Same!
There's a word for that I think.
Playing at Attack reléase is a pretty nice experience when traveling to Glasgow. Thank you mates, looking forward ❤
Fancy seeing you here!! I'm glad you were able to play. I am sure our paths will cross again!!
Love this. Really well done - Great job, Stephen! 🙌
Thanks a lot for watching!
Superb mini doc 👏 great to see the place thriving! Shared on Sonicstate today
Nice one, thank you!!
👏👏👏 It's a magic night, a highlight of my month... Nice documentary. I think you captured the essence of Attack Release. You have to actually come along to enjoy the more visceral aspects.
Thanks for lending me your face about 12 months ago (!!!)
Really well put together doc about a genuinely interesting local scene. Its comforting to know that spaces like this still exist and that Bloc management have the vision to support this sort of grass roots stuff. Things like this give me hope that our musical future is assured, despite the increasingly difficult times most artists are facing. ❤
This is a brilliant wee documentary. Grew up going to the likes of The Subclub, The Arches, The Art School, Tin Pan, Club 69, Sonora etc. Glasgow has always had a great scene. Now I’m old but my love for electronic music and synths has never gone away. Going to convince my fellow oldies to go to one of these nights.
I used to work at the Arches a loooong time ago! Definitely come along one night. There's a bunch of oldies about!
Great to see some of the old school nights mentioned. Glasgow at that time had a such an amazing vibrant exciting chaotic electronic music scene. Was a great time to be alive. Was lucky to have been part of it doing projections for a few of those nights in the early daze. Glasgow has always had something that has made the electronic scene flourish it can be summed up with one word. Passion. A superb wee documentary that showcases that passion. Bloc as a venue has that vibe from the olden days as it is run by an old manny from that era (Apologies Mr.B but couldn’t resist) All the very best for the future and to all those involved keep up the great work.
@@StephenMcLeod if it’s on the end of the month I’m going to go. Being a Wednesday my mates won’t make it, but I’ve convinced my 18 year old son to go with me.
@@scarymanmusic6552 seen some great projection work in The Arches and Art School. Mixmaster Morris in the Maryhill Scout Hall way back in 93 or 94 had some mad projection work going on…… from what I remember
@@crybo That was George Symington sadly no longer with us. The infamous Maryhill gig. Was there with George helping out. Worked in the Arches did the Art school a couple of times, Sonora, Pure at the Barras, Some fantastic times with some lovely people.
Thanks so much for this video. I'm loosely associated with Alan and Doug through our mutual friend's label Hobbes Music, and label owner and long time friend (and production partner) Andy has spoken very highly of what they're doing in Glasgow. It's great to be able to see it, albeit on video, since I have now left the UK. I was wondering how long it would take for you to cross paths with people I might have met, since I know Glasgow is an intimate scene. I hope the scene grows. Thanks again.
This is so cool! Our local scene here in Tokyo is big but pretty scattered, I loved to learn how in Glasgow you guys have put in the hard-work to consolidate the community. Great documentary too, I discovered a bunch of cool artists and was happy to see others Im already following popping up! Damn 👏🏻
Thanks man! Tokyo definitely seems to have a cool scene. I'd love to sink into it a bit more next time around. If you ever make it out to Glasgow let me know!!
Brilliant mini-doc bringing to light the brilliant scene going on in the city
Thanks for watching!
I love how more Scottish everyone sounds on UA-cam. Very professional and well edited documentary. Thanks for having us!
Thanks for chatting to me and waiting like a year for this to come out!!!
I've been a citizen of a neighbouring country for 72 years now but i need to come out - i want to be Scottish. I want to sing Flower of Scotland before the rugby game starts, high on iron bru and shortbread biscuits and i'm already struggling to say " Purple burglar alarm " so i think my application to become Scottish stands a fair chance.I'll need to buy an inflatable sumo wrestler kit and remove the legs to pad mine out because in a kilt i'd look like a pair of chopsticks in tartan.I use the phrases wee and ken frequently and sometimes combine them in to weekend ( but only on a saturday or sunday ) and have a healthy breakfast of deep fried mars bars.
@21:37 Don't worry, Etive is safe and sound down south with us, still making incredible music! Check out his track 'Sweeps' from our TESTCHAMBER project - He got radio play on BBC6!
Oh awesome!! Thanks for the update :)
This is just all kinds of awesome!
Thanks Robbie!!
Awesome mini-doc. Loved it. Loved that it was personal and down-to-earth. Cheers.
Since I'm near Bristol it's bloody great to properly see the Glasgow vibe. Awesome!
Ah man I wanted to come to Bristol for that synth expo thing in October but it is soooo expensive to get there for some reason! Like double the price of London!
@ bristronica? Mate get yer tix early. Elevator are bunging in a discount on weekend tix for 2025 when you buy smt. Someone might put you up even
Hope you come down for it.
You guys are lucky to have a venue like Bloc+. Very cool film - cheers.
Bloc is pretty great. It's a shame that so many venues have been lost. If Bloc went as well we'd be stuffed.
Great doc! It’s so good to see local scenes thriving. I’m definitely going to go down to an AR night soon.
Definitely come along!!
This mini documentary has been beneficial, if you wanted to start an electronic music scene, you need someone, who’s prepared to get the ear of a bar/club,, owner/manager and say, hey let’s put the word out, encourage people to come down and play, and until it picks up, that person can provide and evenings music, and as other people hear the call, step back and let them have their time in the spot light...
Supportive venues definitely are required. Unfortunately the available spaces for these things are getting fewer and fewer...
This looks madly exciting ! I believe that there is a definite Scottish touch to that place that also explains why it seems to work so well: everyone sounds so laid-back, humble and down-to-earth, from the first-timers to the long-time pros. This is so refreshing !
Where I live and play (Paris), the music scene has this ultra-elitist kind of spirit, which is a genuine hindrance on experimentation and on the emergence of new young figures. Maybe Glasgow is becoming the new Berlin ?
Thanks for watching and leaving a thoughtful comment! I've definitely experienced the elitist thing elsewhere - particularly online, but also in different circles. This emerging scene doesn't seem to have that, and folks are genuinely interested in and supportive of one another which is great. I had heard that Athens was the new Berlin to be fair...
Athens !? Well, that’s unexpected, I will have to look into that.
What used to be so special in Berlin was the unlikely association of an ultra-dynamic art scene and of a low cost of life (housing included), which attracted creative people from all over the place. Until recent years, you could truly sustain yourself there just playing gigs while developing your artistic projects in a hyper-creative community.
I am using past tense here however, because apparently, after years of building pressure from tourism, Covid ended up being the final nail in the coffin for most venues in the alternative scene there. Sad.
I am afraid that this all was a lightning-in-a-bottle moment that no hyper-touristic place like Athens or Paris can ever recapture, whatever the circumstances.
So my bets are on Scottish cities, among other places ! 🙂 That is, when you finally rejoin us back in the EU ! We miss you ! 😢
Wow, just wow. I live on a little island without anyone else really into electronic music, this just seems dreamy! Seems like such a great group of people! Top notch video work too!
Thanks a lot! What island are you on!?
@StephenMcLeod Whidbey island. Just a small island north west of Seattle. Can't say I go to mainland US much because, well, yeah.
Moved to Edinburgh a year ago and Glasgow has been a HAVEN for good music, definitely keeping an eye out for this! Good motivation to get a set together for any potential open synth nights too...
Edinburgh?! heresy!!! ;D
brings me SO MUCH joy seeing a scene like this bubbling up back in my homeland.
Thank you guys for all your efforts & Hope to catch one whenever I'm next back!
Thanks for watching! Whereabouts in the world are you nowadays?!
Fantastic doc Stephen! So wonderful to see so many familiar faces :D Though I definitely shoulda shaved before that interview lmao
I'll give you advance warning in future before I demand that you appear on camera!!
As a 61 year old who was lucky to experience different ‘scenes’ northern soul, rave and the grateful dead etc , I’m intrigued! Subscribed ✌️❤️
Thanks for being here!
This is amazing. It’s so wonderful to see anyone bing able to share their passion in this way.
Definitely!
wow some familiar names that have been in the scene for decades! Still hard at it and pushing out great content.
This is brilliant, definitely going to try and bring myself to Glasgow just fit this. Phenomenal.
Every last Wednesday!
Thanks for making this film Stephen. Love it.
Thanks for watching!!
Fraser is a top chap! What a wonderful doc about the great work he and Alan are carrying out. Fantastic 💙💙💙
They are great! We're fortunate to have them.
loved this. All power to Fraser & Alan - they've made something really special here along with the Bloc crew & playing here at the back end of last year was one of my absolute favourite gigs of 2024. Forza Attack Release! x
Yeah! They've really committed to making it work and it's built up a cool community
Thanks for sharing this! (got the link from Reddit).
Unrelated comment: I love so much the accent of people from the north of the UK! - And also love the accents from the south, west and east too :D
Thanks for being one of the rare good people from Reddit!!! and for the accent love!!
Might have to try and pop along sometime.. I didn’t know there was such a synth scene in Glasgow…
We are everywhere.
Inspiring doc - thank you for putting it out there. It's encouraging to see other small experimental scenes popping up outside of where I'm hanging. I think there's a larger movement happening, and I'm psyched for it.
It definitely seems like there are pockets popping up all over the place!
Thanks @StephenMcLeod, great wee documentary. Looks amazing, I'm definitely going to try and make it through to Attack Release, it's too not far for me.
Hey thanks so much! I appreciate it :) You should definitely come through at some point. Free entry!
So great to see this! Wish I could attend. Thank you.
Maybe one day!!
Great documentary. Wow what a wonderful place and scene. Wish we had something like this here ...
Time to start your own thing maybe?!
This was great man. Really good stuff
Thanks man!!
So cool, great to see good people creating fantastic opportunities for seasoned and new performers, I would have been all over this when I was still in Scotland. Probably wouldn’t have come across this if you hadn’t been on the best gear of 2024
Oh Nice! Bobeats doing me a solid!!
Fantastic doc and scene there! It's so similar to our Coastal Electronauts @electronicsynth monthly session here in Whitstable with the same ethos too
oh reeeealy. Maybe I'll need to make a trip down sometime.
@@StephenMcLeod that'd be fantastic - would be great to come up to you too! We do every 2nd Thursday and next one is 13th in a new bigger venue as our last one sadly closed as so many grassroots venues have done.
Well.. this looks great! I'd actively been wondering if there's anything like this in Glasgow, but not managed to find anything so far. Thanks for drawing attention to it.
(and it looks a little less dangerous than the Tokyo scene)
A beautifully made documentary about a beautiful scene. Super well played everyone.
Thanks a lot!!
Very inspiring as someone who's starting out with Analogue Lab 4 and 5 and my Artist MiniLab
Nice! Best of luck!
very well done. love stuff like this.
This is great, love it. Seems like a really healthy thing going on up there. Wish we had something like this down south, if there is not found it yet.
Old acquaintance of mine played up there a few months back.
Nice! What was their name?! Whereabouts are you? There are a few cool things going on in places like Manchester, Lancaster, London... Stoke-On-Trent!
@@StephenMcLeod Simon Heartfield. Just outside Southampton way. I see Synth East going this month as well In Norwich.
Nice! Yeah there's a bunch of cool ones if you do a search for EMOM :)
@@StephenMcLeod Actually Simon has been actively involved in setting up events over the years, i think he's doing it more full time now. Back in the 90's there was a lot of stuff going on with live events down here.
I just joined up to ModdWiggler, i thought i already had. There's a section on there about live events.
Hello Glasgow! I love how this is parallel to my home city Te Papaioea Palmerston North and our local spaces. Tiny Club/Snails host regular hardware electronic shows. Community and diversity for the win! Thanks for the vid!
Amen! That's awesome. I like the name as well.
Fantastic documentary man! Now I wish I would be there to hang out with likeminded people, listen to refreshing new music and play myself.
Whereabouts are ye?!
Great vid. I love these docs. I’m the only person I know with a synth, so I love hearing other folk talk passionately about them. I watched the Paul Tas/error instruments one the other day, highly recommended.
I haven't seen that one! Do you have a link so I can check it out!?
@@StephenMcLeod ua-cam.com/video/YMfW8bbo8P0/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
Well done! Love Glasgow for that :)
this is awesome. want to find similar events in my area for sure
Excellent doc. Really enjoyable. Cheers. That tooth head of yours is truly terrifying.
You'll see it in your nightmares.
Amazing video. Enjoyed that! ❤
Thanks for watching!!
fantastic look into the scene, really charming, friendly & inviting! 🤩
Thanks for watching!!
top video Stephen, hopefully see on my first visit to the night. thnaks
Thanks!! Hope you make it along soon.
Awesome vid.. I wish there was more places in London like this
Thanks! There are a few. Martin Christie runs one once a month in Camden that is worth checking out. I think at Dublin Castle.
@StephenMcLeod cheers man I will check that out!
I don't know how I have missed your channel thus far, but I'm subscribed now! Also: This is a fantastic mini-doc. I'm totally going to this next time I'm in Glasgow!
Definitely make it along!!
Amazing to see this kind of scene in Glasgow! Here in Virginia, I just started going to something similar called the Richmond Synth Collective, where people set up some gear, meet and greet, nerd out, then open up the floor to an open mic! It’s been great to experience some like minded folks in person, and I’m even planning on doing a live set next month, woohoo! Cheers from across the pond 🎹🎶
Nice one!! Thanks for watching and commenting. Best of luck with your set!
Nice to see synth communities across the pond. Looks cool 😊
Now you know where to visit if you ever make it to Scotland!!
What a fantastic and very interesting watch.Really enjoyed every second of that!!,,thanks for sharing🙏
Thanks for watching!!
Love this. Keep it going. Quite inspirational
Thanks for watching!
Very cool - nice one. Wish I lived a lot closer than I do, local scenes like this are so important.
Thanks for watching!
Great vid and what an awesome community. I wish we had something like it where I live. Guess I'll have to come to Glasgow :)
Thank you, Stephen. Great show. I will get along there if I can.
Def worth dropping by!
Jokes aside, this is great, wish they had something similar where I live now, Winnipeg, MB.
Brilliant. Really enjoyed that. Going to get along to the next one.
Nice one! Hope you enjoy!
Awesome stuff! Greetings from Frequency Freaks in Toronto! Hope to make it there sometime!
Cheers Paul! Definitely pop along if you ever end up in Glasgow.
Magnificent! Leaves me with the burning desire to take out a loan and voyage northward to bear witness to Attack Release
It's a worthy addition to a trip to Glasgow!!
Bring on the electronic music revolution. I run the London EMOM at the Dublin Castle. Come down and play a set
Is this Martin?! I've been wanting to come down for a while... Just need to find the right time.
@@StephenMcLeod I know Martin very well. I'm D, I run Lucida Records, we do an EMOM and a night called Electroniq at the Dublin Castle. The crazier the mask, the better ! ;)
@LegPuppy oh niiiice. I'm in London at the end of march! What's your email and I'll drop you a note? :)
Really well documented 👍 Fantastic to have a focal point for likeminded souls..
Thanks a lot! It's definitely been good to have fellow freaks, errr synth people about.
@@StephenMcLeod freaks is fine, never considered this obsession to be in anyway normal business 😉
Excellent scene you've got there in Glasgow.
I must visit
You must
So cool, thanks for this!
Thanks for watching!
Bedankt
Thanks a lot Johan! That is very much appreciated.
Awesome documentary, well done!
Thanks for watching!!
Quite a list of new music to listen to 😅, thanx :)
Definitely check out their own channel! Full sets are available on there. :)
Great film, inspiring.😀 "scenius" - Brian Eno.
:D
Been a solo musician at home for years... This video inspired me to look and I actually found a similar community musician event near me.
Oh awesome! Whereabouts are you!?
Hey thanks for posting, been meaning to go but never have, live in Falkirk so no excuses no to go now. I’d be interested in gigging - maybe….
Definitely worth popping along and speaking to Fraser or Alan!
Brilliant doco, brilliant scene
Thanks for watching!
Wow, never heard of this. Have to take a trip down the Glasgow soon.
Nice work, I’ve had the notion to catch an Attack Release night (I’m up the road in Stirling) but never quite managed it yet. One of these days. I recognise a couple of the acts from the 1.5 Months nights at the Old Hairys.
Great video, thank you. Have been looking for something since rpm stopped in London during lockdown. Looks like a road trip is in order. 🙏🏻
There are some cool ones in London too. I think Martin Christie runs a monthly night in Camden at Dublin Castle!
Really enjoyed this superb and inspiring. I’d love to get a gig if it’s at all possible. Brilliant feature Stephen 👏🏻❤
Hey man! Thanks for watching and the kind comment. Definitely speak to Fraser or Alan next time you're in and see if they have slots!
Thanks will do 😊🕺🏻
Hats off to Bloc 👏
It's in the contract interestingly enough that all bands/artists who play at Bloc have to get paid - which is pretty great.
This looks awesome! Right up my alley!!
✨💫🎵💖🎹💖🎵💫✨
I would make a trip to Glasgow just to attend these shows. I can see a Glasgow “sound” coming out of this.
You heard it hear first!!
Great to see Rebecca Yurivna on there! Her set last year was crazy.
Yeah it was great!
This is a great video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
Great video! Thank you
Fancy seeing you here.

Enjoyed the ride, thanks
Thanks for watching. Sweet avatar!!
@@StephenMcLeod Thanks, it's the logo for my custom 3DS music app (my channel is all about it).
I saw you dabbled with the PSP in one older video, was it PSP Rhythm?
I kind of started collecting Handheld-music-making apps ever since.
I know you are a fan of the M8, I also have one but didn't put a lot of time in it yet.
I think it's the best in it's domain.
Anyhoo :)
Great doc. The exact same thing is happening here in London. Ive been rumning a night called Synth Club in Walthamstow for a year and everything that your contributors mention happens here too. Check out EMOM (electronic music open mic) nights that are popping up all over the UK. There's probably 4 or 5 nights like it in London alone. So good to see. We do need more Woman involved though.
Great documentary, really enjoyed this. I 'stay' nearer Edinburgh at the moment (that means I live there for anyone who's not Scottish!). It's funny to read the comments and see a few other people saying the same thing from over this way! Might be moving nearer glesga this year so I'll definitely get along to one of these nights.
Also it's cool to see comments from people I follow on UA-cam, I suppose it's a small scene. I'm into modular but don't own any Eurorack, I use software instead which is even more niche. 😂
I bought my first two eurorack modules at rubadub in Glasgow... roots of all evil...😂😂😂
They have a lot to answer for!!
