  • UPDATE (JULY 29, 2022): This video is now about a year and a half old. Please read through the shopping experiences of others below. These comments are very welcome and useful. The sizing of these shorts remains mysterious at best. Be prepared for some back and forth with Rapha. Once you get your fit dialed, these are excellent, long lasting, tough and super cool shorts!
MARCH 5, 2021: In this video I go deep on tech info, how to buy and proper sizing of the excellent Rapha Randonnee shorts. These are great city, commuting and, as the name suggests, they are perfect for all day, long distance riding.

Note: the Rapha website is glitchy at best for me on Safari. I strongly suggest using Google Chrome as your browser when visiting this website.

Very glad that you found my review too! Hopefully it is useful. Please see my notes and comments from others and myself that have been added since I made this video. This review is now 2 years old. Mostly it remains accurate. Currently, a search on the Rapha website for "randon" brings up two separate listings for the Men's Randonee Shorts. I no longer see any differentiations in the two listings about different cuts. I can only assume that they are all what I call "Regular Cut" in my review at this point. Please, if you order, comment back on your experience here when you get them as to the fit. Thanks! 👍

Great video with all the detail I needed to purchase with a bit more confidence. I'm coming for Kitsbow Haskell shorts which are amazing but with the weak Australian Dollar they are very expensive thought rapha might be worth a look as an alternative.
The size comparison images and confirmation of the hard wearing nature of the shorts is reassuring, I'll be using mine for MTB as much as gravel and work commutes. The most useful bit for me was your final comments on your jean size v these shorts. I'm a 33 in levi's sounds like I should be going for the 32 Randonnee shorts.
Congratulations on a very informative and useful video.

Thanks John! I'm glad you found it useful. Not sure what the current info is on the Rapha site for the Randonee shorts, but at the time of my review I found it confusing that they had two listings for two different "cuts". They remain my favorite cycling garment. Ok, I just looked on the site and it is just as confusing (to me) as ever! If you search for "Randonnee", three mens shorts listings appear. There is one listing for Randonee shorts that are on sale for $75. In that listing they say they are the "generous cut" and to size down. But no sizes are available in that listing. 😂 Then there are two other listings that are a little vague with no mention to what cut they are. I could only assume that means they are what I call "Regular Cut" in my review. I would guess that 32 in those two listings would be your best bet. If you order, let me know how the fit is. I will add that Rapha is very good with returns. Best of luck to you and thanks for the great feedback!

Some great information there. I’m also considering the chrome industry shorts, but Rapha is easier to source in the UK. Thanks for the video 👍🏻

Hello! Thanks for the great review really really helpful! You mentioned that the overall fit of the green regular cut size 36 is comparable to the generous cut size 34. Would you be able to tell if the fit around the waist is the same for both? Is the size 36 regular cut slightly bigger around the waist compared to the generous cut size 34? Thanks!

Hi! Thanks for watching. This is a great question. Yes, I think the size 36 in the regular cut is the same as the size 34 in the generous cut. The new size 34 that I got from the generous cut seemed a little tight when new, compared to the 36 generous, but that was just because they weren’t broken in yet. I’ve worn them a few times now and they are perfect and the same fit.

@@thewandernear4519 Thank you! I guess all Rapha did was replace the sizing tags on the new season pants as there is no difference to the overall cut and has the exact same fit :)

@@coreyv111 Yes: it seems that way. There could be more to it than that. Manufacturer maybe changed at some point. And then there is the Rapha marketing scheme. Its always been aimed specifically at "elite" cyclists. No serious "elite" cyclist should be anything other than Coppi thin. Back in the day, all of their models looked that way. They have gotten more diverse in recent years, but still, the fact that they have never had anything bigger than a size 36 in these shorts has been troubling to me: an average, slightly over weight, early-no-longer-middle aged man! So I think they have built a little reverse psychology into their sizing.

Great video. Do you ever wear chamois underneath for specific rides?

Hey, thanks for watching. My winter tights (Pearl Izumi Am Fib) have a chamois. But I'm happy to switch over the All Birds wool blend, light weight undies when it gets warm enough. I'm sure they work great with chamois shorts or bibs underneath. Just not my cup of tea. I do use Chamois Butt'r. The combo is enough to keep me comfy for short and long rides.

I got randonee shorts in 2017 and it said then to downsize! I am size 30 they were way too baggy for me but waist was ok. I sent back and downsized to 28 ( I have no clothes in a 28), fit looks good but a little tight on the waist. I'm guessing the new ones if I downsize will probably fit better I just hope they are not too baggy looking in the size 28 and not too tight on the waist like the old ones. I have very skinny legs 5ft 11 66 kg.

My two newest/current pairs of 34's are a very good fit. No bagginess and not too tight anywhere either. Just a really good, all round cycling short. It's crazy though to have to go through all that I/we went/go through to land on the right size for these. There is nothing else in my closet that is not mostly 38's and a few 36's that are generally too tight. And then there are these 34 waist Randonee Shorts that are a perfect fit...

@@thewandernear4519 thank you! That helps so here is to hoping a size 28 will fit my 30 inch waist and have a reasonable slim flit on my skinny legs!

@@thewandernear4519 just a FYI I bought a pair off the archive sale at 28 waist, they were crazy tight and much smaller than my old 28's. So I just ordered the latest edition in both a 28 and 30, in which I will have to return one of them 😅 They have said to downsize for 4 years now, so I think its just not up to date anymore and every model still varies haha.

@@cyclehavenbanks9851 Thanks for the update! Others experiences are greatly appreciated and welcome here! I think my video may becoming irrelevant at this point. I may take it down or update it? One thing I will say is that I continue to wear the two new pairs that I presented in this video, almost 18 months ago, daily. And I still wear the older green pair occasionally. They are all tough and lasting. So once you get the size right, you are good to go! Recently I've been wearing bibs under them with only positive results.
