@TobyMathis, you are using a clipboard to read your lecture, yet even with it, you kept forgetting which point you were on. For the viewers' convenience, however, you’re not displaying any key points on the screen. All we see is your "beautiful" face while we listen to your lecture and try to remember and memorize everything you say!
Moreover, your understanding of tariffs and your fear of a "tariff war" and inflation seem quite flawed. Prices are not absolute numbers; they are relative. For example, if you are poor, a $10 price tag might be too high and unaffordable. On the other hand, if you’re wealthy, even $1,000 might feel cheap. In the U.S., even a poor citizen can afford a $15 lunch, but in many developing countries (which you worry about in the so-called "tariff war"), $15 could be an entire week's expense, which is unaffordable for most.
The important issue is understanding how to increase earnings:
      1- Lower taxes,
      2- Create decent local jobs,
3- Boost local production and manufacturing.
Tariffs are a tool for achieving these goals. If you’re concerned about a tariff war, you should also consider who is better positioned to win such a war: a country where even a single person can spend $15 on one meal, or those where $15 is a week's worth of expenses for an entire family?

I don't like taxes purely for 1 reason, the government makes you calculate your own tax and penalises heavily for doing it wrong. I have no issues paying taxes as a US citizen, however I hate that I have to do the paperwork when the government already has all the info they need. Always struck me as odd.

Tips can be tract in card payments, and all cash will be void from tax. It's not that difficult for businesses to disclose tips from card payments because they are already being done. IRS will just have to not include tips as income. That's how the tips can be avoided from income tax. I worked as an auditor, and that's why I know that it can be easily done.

    1. Lot's of good information.
    2. People are really fools not to make friends with an estate attorney and an Enrolled Agent. My first boss said that to me over 50 years ago. Have used both. One of my brothers became an enrolled agent.
    3. Mr. Mathis limited his comments to Mr. Trump's plan. If you retained someone of his caliber, he would discuss educational trusts, annual gifting, hiring your kids as employees.
    4. The old expression was "Behind every successful man is a woman." When popular lore paints Bill Gates as a brilliant college dropout, he gives the credit to his father who was considered one of the top business lawyers of his time. Who do you think was Mr. Buffet's partner for so many years? A Los Angeles lawyer who was known locally as a brilliant lawyer.

Question, we rent out our primary residence all for less than 7 day rentals on Airbnb. We have the property listed on Airbnb for 8 months each year and then, we live in said home for the other 4 months. We made $12,000 in 2024 renting it 23 times for an avg of 4 days/43 rental. We don’t offer any services to guests during their stay. How should we file taxes? Should we use schedule E, and can we write off depreciation as passive loss? Thanks in advance.

  • @timprussell

I’d be careful with the word permanent, it is likely congress will need to use reconciliation again. That allow them to pass with a simple majority in the Senate or they got to get 60 senators on board. To use reconciliation then you run into the Byrd rule which limits how much the legislation can add to the debt over 10 years. So I see the social security as a good possibility of passing since that tax money went back to the trust fund and not the general fund. The salt cap was unpopular on both sides of the aisle so it may go or get raised substantially. The rest is less likely as it cuts revenue and thus needs to be made up for and or we get sunsets again.

Part of your discussion of tariffs is "dreamland". You got the "tariffs are a tax" accurate. The idea that tariffs help domestic businesses get a leg up and then eventually tariffs go away is the dream part. You describe how tariffs are supposed to work. I reality once a tariff is on it rarely foes off ( check the 25% tariff on European pickup trucks that is still on after 50 years ) in fact the US manufacturers raise their prices on domestically produced goods that are subject to a tariff and lobby the government to not remove the tariff ( recent example of home appliances and tariffs on Korean produced appliances). Unfortunately a lot of the stuff we get from China there is no manufacturing in the US and its unlikely. Got the retaliation part correct as well - check farm products in the first Trump administration.

I'm a licensed Customs Broker here in the US. My business is navigating and understanding tariffs and strategizing business decisons based on their impact.
Here are two negative impacts, and then my personal experience from Trump 2016 on business impact to US companies.
The human element using 20% flat as the basis, though we won't know what he's going to do until he does it. The 20%, tariff essentially raises the cost of goods imported, which drives the importer to push that increase to the end purchaser. Where this is problematic from a human perspective is that it is the same 20% increase across the buying landscape. The person who is making 15.00/hr is paying the same 20% increase on a pair of shoes that Elon would pay. That is unbalanced and essentially adds to the growing class gaps.
The fiscal element - do the math. The numbers don't add up. You simply can't get to the same revenues with tariffs that you can with taxes. Many economists have called this out.
My personal experience. Under trump 2016, I had clients close manufacturing in the US. Why? In one example, because the cost of the components from China became untenable from a total cost perspective, it was less expensive to move their production to Mexico. Under NAFTA (and this is intact after trump renegotiated) the rules of origin contain both regional value content and tariff shift rules. For this product, the finished goods qualified even with the Chinese content. Because the tariffs in MX on the components didn't include the China punitives, and because the finished product qualified on import to the US, they closed US production.
In another example, I had a client lose so much money that they closed up shop. This customer had open POs from a big retailer, where profit margins were already super tight. Enter tariffs that were not in place when the orders were negotiated. The big guys don't renegotiate, so every order filled by this importer was at a loss. They were unable to sustain the losses.
Finally..there are no winners in trade wars. The subsidies we paid the farmers after losing the soybean markets in retaliation by China are still hitting our national budget.
Just some of my personal experiences. I'm jaded. We in my line of work are bracing ourselves for the extra work we will be doing in the coming months.

As I understand, the consumer has the option of purchasing from foreign imports at a higher price point due to the cost incurred to sell their products in the USA. The consumer doesn't have to buy import items, but if they do they know why they will pay more. I'm pretty sure with made in America and sold in America the prices will be lower with likely the same competitive product. We the consumer will have choices along with the importers who choose to sell their products in the USA. This is good business in my opinion.

No where, you can thank both parties in congress for that by letting the American corporations ship the jobs over seas and giving them a tax break so they could get the lobbing money.
