@@ADMarndi 'Devdas' is a romance novel written by a bengali writer SARAT CHANDRA CHATTOPADHYAY (the story of Devdas is partially true, yes). There is actually a railway station called 'Pandua' / 'Pandooah' in West Bengal. [Paro married a landlord of Pandua in the story]
Devdas has been made and remade so many times in so many languages. The original novel is a timeless masterpiece which transcends all borders, languages and cultures.

I am sorry but YESSSS ACHARA CRIED. For a min I was getting worried she wasn't gonna cry cuz she was holding it pretty well with jaby distracting her. but the ending did it. You just cant have an emotional movie reaction without achara crying in it.

Most of his works deal with the lifestyle, tragedy and struggle of the village people and the contemporary social practices that prevailed in Bengal. Yeah his novels brings tears to our eyes.

Its been two years, so maybe its late. But you wont understand why Chandramukhi loved Devdas. See, she was a coutesen, and people talked to nicely at most, but out of lust. Devdas was the only man who treated her like a women, he consistently tried to convince her that a women is a goddess, she is mother , a sister, a daughter, she is very powerful and very capable. Selling her body is the least way of utilising her feminine energy. He fought with her for her....because he though she should not be living this way. Thats why she loves him.
Madhuri truly overshadowed eveyone else in the movie..the way she portrayed chandramukhi was so so so perfect..her expressions and little nuances are so apt..nobody else could have done justice to the chandramukhi character..MADHURI THE QUEEN

You know the bengali novel "Devdas" is so emotionally written that i could not read it fully. I cried so much that i'm dying inside. I had to leave it in the middle. The movie is beautifully portrayed the story. It's the scenario of past bengal society that upper class couldn't marry lower class. Now a days it's much more lesser. I read somewhere that writer Sarat Chandra Chattapadhay wrote this novel on the basis of some true incidents he watched in village.
Ikr it was shocking to find out class difference in bhramans AMONG themselves 🤦🤦. One would think bhraman marrying another bhraman would be intra caste but boy was I wrong😂🤦

I love seeing Achara got excited when "Chandramukhi" slapped the man and her dialogue delivery.
The Story was written in the very early period of 19th century. By this, you can imagine how much secular and open mindset the author (Sarat Chandra Chattopaadhyaay) used to hold, living in a society full with all arrangements to hold the women back.

The thing about Chunni babu's (Jackie Shroff) lines in this movie is that he only speaks in alliteration, and sadly not all of it is or can be translated and you end up missing a lot of spice. He truly was a beautiful addition to this epic movie.
The dance Madhuri Dixit is dancing is Kathak, a dance from Uttar Pradesh. Its got the most expressive facial expressions and fluid body movements

@@dancerchick Kathak is dance based on expressions. And yes I know Bharatnatyam and Kathakali. Bharatnatyam is known for its Centre of gravity movements, Kathakali is known for its elaborate costumes and is not as expressive as Kathak.
Kathak is entirely based on expressions and fluidity. It's not a comparison. It's stating the USP of every dance form.

the representation of alcoholism in this movie hits me so hard. My own father passed away from drinking "one more time" despite the doctors telling him what they told devdas. This movie is just a masterpiece.
Srk is the king of bollywood for a reason. Every 90's actor have had their fair share of Cringeness, but wht separate him from the rest is that SRK has always been about evolving himself with the changing minds of the audience. Based on today's era of realistic acting if u judge his 90s or early 2000s films, do u think u r doing justice to this man and his almost 3 decades old career of serving and entertaining people. Did Aamir started out his career with 3 idiots level of acting?? No right...

Shah Rukh did very well as Devdas but the man who actually breathed life into this fictional character is the one and only Dilip Kumar sahab. I saw a few portions from this earlier versions and was blown away by his acting. So real, so nuanced, so measured! WOW!

I'm in the u.k , back in 2003 I met this American couple in Tower records in piccadilly circus. They were going through the bollywood section of dvds. I asked them how they got into watching Indian movies, they said they saw devdas at a film festival and lost their minds. I told them to watch black which was gonna release the following year. Most Americans won't get the emotions in this movie, but some will and appreciate it. Jaby is more American than he is Asian. Achara is more Asian then British, she's a emotional person so she gets it.

Agree with u on this. I prefer the 50s adaptation with Dilip Kumar though that didnt have the huge sets & high tech camera. But Sanjay LV's version should be watched & respected too for what it accomplished with set & costume design & for being this epic.

I just left an 'In the book...' comment in the part 1 video so this may sound a little repetitive. But I'm still going to say that things are a lot different in terms of characters in the movie. From the movie maybe it comes across as the families kept them from being happy. The book is much deeper in the sense that, yes, the families do disagree in the book, but the pride of both Dev and Paru themselves play a huge part as well. Misunderstanding and own-ego-serving make them miss out on each other, and they must pay the price of their own mistakes by living ruined lives. It's just way sadder. Also, the movie added a bunch of family drama using the time they could have developed the Chandramukhi-Dev relationship. Chandramukhi doesn't instantly fall in love with him in the novel, it happens slowly over nights when he drunk-rambles his sad life story to her and she takes care of him.
That last scene still makes u fill with tears even seeing it many times.. miss this SRK

For those who think SRK's last 3 films were semi hit and not super duper hit like his films generally did

Amitabh Bachchan also gone through the same phase and he had given 9 back to back flops(means proper flops)
Akshay Kumar had given 14 back to back flops
Salman had given 4 back to back flops 2 times (once between 2000-2011) and 5 now (Prem Ratan dhan payo, Bharat, tubelight,dabbang 3,Radhe)
And SRK only had 1 flop film i.e. FAN but that was a masterpiece but audience were not good enough to appreciate his acting. They always want him to perform romantic movies (King of romance)
And his semi hit are dear zindagi,zero,harry met Sejal
