Like a lot of other comments here: I've been searching my ass off for this issue. Logic's help forum only giving answers as if we're idiots: "make sure the I button is on" or "check your audio input settings" Thanks a lot🙏for this quick and clear solution

This post is still helping Logic users (or at least newbies like me) in 2022. I reinitialized Logic and couldn't hear any of my plugins. I checked Input Monitoring and Low Latency Mode settings, but overlooked Software Monitoring (thinking it was the same as Input Monitoring). Your video got my issue sorted quickly. This is the second time this video has set me straight, the first time being about a year ago (and I forgot from that first time what the solution was.) I had reset my Preferences to the defaults and those two checkboxes Auto Input Monitoring, and Software Monitoring got eliminated from the Control Bar and Display. It was the Software Monitoring that allowed me to hear my guitar whether in Record mode or not (and, yes, the I button next to the R button in the channel strip was turned on.)
Before using this solution, when I tried to record everthing worked (I was recording OK), but I couldn't hear it until playback, not while recording. Thanks again, Mr. Mike!
Thank God i found you! i've been away from my studio awhile...i was hearing all my mics thru my cans while playing acoustic, but zero playback. i was losing my mind with forgetfulness, and you saved me.

Hey John Mike, thanks a bunch for this clip! The issue was driving me crazy for some time now and my solution was to randomly click on the Input monitor button and the record button and so on until it worked. Now I can fix it directly! Cheers dude!

I don’t see the bar that you clicked when the video started how did you get to that bar
you have to right-click to the right of the area where the time and beats are shown.
You can turn on Software Monitoring from the Logic Pro Audio Preferences.
Go to Logic Pro > Preferences > Audio > Devices > Core Audio

@@danielknighton4046 I had the same problem, I figured it out though, you go to Logic Pro X > Preferences > Advanced Tools, then you have to enable the advanced tools, and after you've done that you're able to right-click and edit the toolbar like he does in the video. Hope This Helps!

Thank you so much. I wanted to live input monitor vocals and guitar during playback of a drummer part that was already laid down. Adding the buttons "Software Monitoring" and "Auto Input Monitoring" helped a ton. I had to enable software monitoring and disable auto input monitoring for this to work (using Logic Pro 10.7.1). Thanks a lot. I actually stopped using Logic X because of this issue, and went to my old Logic 9, Garageband and Ableton Live. Such an easy fix, but still I wonder why the developers hid this absolutely central function. Didn't know it was possible to customize the Control Bar and display. Software monitoring with the green button should really have been a default.

Thank you!!!! Every time I get a new computer I struggle with this, and I've been using the product for 20 years. I can't find it because I never turn it off. It is particularly stupid that they completely hide the setting -- like, you have to manually unhide the toggle to even use it, and though there are various other software/input monitoring preferences this one exists in a completely different part of the app. Then when I search for instructions, I get references to all the other monitoring toggles and have to dig and dig to find references to this one. I feel like they hate their users.

First of all, thank you. This is an excellent to the point video. Second of all, upgrading for Garageband, why isn't Logic Pro set this way by default. Still hasn't solved my issue. I can see my inputs going through, but can't hear them. Tried it with software and auto input monitoring on and off. Tried changing inputs. Tried looking at forums, but all of them assume I'm an idiot and didn't select the input monitoring button or something like that.

In case anyone is having this issue with BigSur and cannot find a solution (the interface does not have the input monitoring button) try quitting logic and restarting. This fixed it for me.
