People don't truly understand just how hard people work in the kitchen. I've been working in a kitchen for about a month now and every day is really hard work, worse on weekends. But I feel a certain satisfaction knowing that I've worked hard for my wages.
i've got huge respect for ny person working in tough jobs like these. i myself worked as kitchen porter for 2 yrs in 3 star hotel in uk n beleive me i worked 14-18hrs shift for 6 pounds n 35 cents for each hr. i use to deal with nearly 1500 people's dishes daily. money was quick n gud. had no complaints abt work. i think for a hardworker nothing is difficult. better to work hard rather thn beg, steal or borrow.
Yh It is tough, did it myself for a very long time as a lone kp most days and nights doing 12 hr shifts quite often, You have to get on with it in this type of job anyway, It's a constant hot hectic type work environment, your always rushed, I mean I think a good Kitchen Porter has to be hard working anyway otherwise they wouldn't last long doing the job anyway unless they are working at a very small place. I Worked for a big hotel and a big chain doing this job similar to yourself
Skove Stove Yes, the longest I have stayed for closing is 2 am. The earliest I have closed is 12 am. Sucks I am not the tallest dishwasher from my job.
Robert Paes you sound like me, the exact same thing happened to me right when I was about to get off. It was like where the hell were all these dishes when we were slow
Lucky you I’d get in shit if I drank alcohol at work. I’m a dishwasher in a busy restaurant. You get no gratitude for your work by the servers or managers. Chefs on the other hand if you work well and treat them with respect they will be really nice. A lot of chefs came from kitchen porters I’ve been told
I'm like the lebron James of my kitchen because my coworkers are lazy af and I have to carry them team by myself. I gave one of my coworkers the nickname of batman because he always has a knack for disappearing without anyone knowing where the fuck he is during service.
When I first started in the kitchen I dish washed, the only difference is once everything dried I had to bring them to their corresponding place, like that 2 inch full pan he cleaned he just slid it into place above him, I had to walk around the whole kitchen
The_Luke_Ness Same bro, what was really shit was if the chef couldn’t find something, I got all the fuckin blame, even though he just put it under some pans or a chopping board, I’d still get yelled at and called slack by the head chef, when two minutes later he finds the correct dish under his fucking mess
My job is one of the most difficult, dishes come like rainfalls and I'm the only one to wash, and arrange the plates, pots and everything, i mop the kitchen and throw the trash bags etc, today is my fifth day and I collect only 4 euros an hour and I often work for 8 hours with no time to even pee. I'm told about salary increment after a month and that keeps me moving. Yeah it sounds more than a job but yeah it's my first job here and I need to survive. When you go to a restaurant go give tips to the dishwasher he deserves it most.
I'm 3 weeks in at a newly opened restaurant and I was thoroughly prepared partly because of your video. Thank you very much. I knew I was putting in work, if i was working at around your pace.
So I just got back from my first day and suprisingly the time flew by quicker than I realized felt like 3 hours but it was a 6 hour shift. didn't take any breaks just Small ones to piss and drink. The only thing killing me is my lower back 😫 wish me luck for tomorrow 🤙🏽 and good luck to yall.
@@killakhasim2193 ay man congrats.. honestly don't think too much of it just make sure you ask questions on where stuff goes and always remember that the dishes will eventually get done good luck bro.
Matt B where I worked, in a pretty popular diner in the desert, the temperature in the dishwasher zone was unbearable and we used the tap hose to keep ourselves cool, as we didn’t have ac, whereas the chef who had extractor fans, huge commercial fans and a small ac on him, must have been cold!! I ended up leaving that job lol
So many people hate dishwashing lol. Dishwashing is very versatile. You can work as long as you want, do drugs, potentially earn more as a cook with a lil schooling (no longer than 6 months) to make a comfortable living. You can also use dishwashing as a temporary patch if you lose a job. Simply dishwash at 2 restaurants until you pick yourself back up to get the job you want. With dishwashing you can even decide to work your ass off at multiple dishwashing jobs then travel abroad for some months. Then easily pick up more Dishwashing jobs.
So, no proper pre-rinse for several trays. No sanitizing rinse. I get that dishies want to share, but please people... share only if you actually care professionally about cleaning. If you are just punching a time clock - please don't. The food service industry doesn't need more bad examples of how not to handle food safety in a professional manner, the management/owners are quite fine screwing us all on their own.
Blake Tonkel you know that you can buy test strips, so see how sanitary the plate is. Around where I live we test the plates randomly to catch that. It's also a test to ensure the dish machine is working properly.
Hey fellow dishwashers! I'm just curious how much you guys make an hour and what your schedule is like. Currently I work 45 hours a week and make 16$ an hour on top of delivery tips. Although I usually don't get out until 11-12:30 ish I feel like I get treated pretty well at my place, just wondering how you guys are making out.
Yesterday was my first day, im 17 and its not that i didnt like it, but i see how us dishwashers are at the bottom. After all that, we are last to leave and have to mop. Also i used that same damn machine, it wouldnt be so bad but i got big pots that had to be washed in that machine ONE AT A TIME. And when you wash dishes, that one at a time bullshit isnt fun when cooks come bringin in 43 more dishes to wash
I'm a dishy myself and get ready cause it's allot more than dishwashing my man, there's bins, deliverys and they will want you on desserts. Your right, we are on the bottom, but you just gotta cop it on the chin. My main problem is speed and shit cos it's hard to put out spotless clean dishes and be quick at the same time, not impossible just hard, especially for a 15 year old. Plus there's the heat, yelling and busyness on weekends n that
I feel ya, hang in there, you'll be alright. You may feel like you are at the bottom but a proper dishwasher is the backbone of any successful restaurant, we are the beginning and we are the end, no good restaurant can operate properly without a dishman at the helm. You must always keep this in mind and don't let anyone step on you, be assertive and take control of things, you are far more important than you give yourself credit for.
this is way easy compared to where i work, literally, in my place you would sweat your bum out like you've never had before, its maddd, and you dont get a break until youve finished 8 hours of work

***Don’t do it! Most restaurants have kitchens with toxic people; careless management; ONE dishwasher employee (you); and hard work will never be noticed!***
i have used an autochlor machine like that. now im in a new restaurant and I have a machine with two racks. pretty much two corner machines put together. I can say honestly that it is a royal pain in the ass if you're not paired up with another dishwasher. it's harder to clean. takes longer to refill and when stuff falls in you have to climb in the damn thing to fish it out. the worst thing by far is when something catches on a hinge on the inside, which happens more often than I'd like to admit and you have to run back and forth wasting time (cuz the machine is rather large) trying to reach the pan handle that's stuck. Whatever the bigger machine does in productivity, it ruins in complications.
I work in a small restaurant but ya still full all the time and I’m the only dishwasher there. I have to wash them wait till they’re dry put them away dodging the cooks and waitress. Not to mention the temperature in the kitchen
