On 6th October 2017, exactly 50 years to the day since this classic song was first broadcast, Belfast singer-songwriter Mandy Bingham has paid tribute to her late father David McWilliams by releasing her own version. Mandy enlisted the inimitable Michael Mormecha of Millbank Studios, Lisburn as producer. Also featured are the amazing Arco String Quartet, Graham Bingham on lap steel guitar, Edelle McMahon on electric guitar, and Mormecha himself on drums.
Mandy and Graham’s daughter Lola adds a striking contribution to the backing vocals, making this new version a unique three-generational offering.

I was 15 years old when this song hit the top 10 in the Netherlands, my country. After more than 50 years I realize that this is still one of the best songs ever written. @@annemariefranz8832 David McWilliams once said he had written the song about a homeless man that he encountered in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, the town where he had lived since he was 3 years old.

Wow, I am now 70 and your Fathers original version was my favourite back in the 60's.
Then Marc Almond brought his version out which lasted 5 minutes, I was in heaven as it was so much longer.
Now after 50 years I have heard your re-recording which is being played on "Free Post-code Lottery" site.
Mandy, your Father would have been so proud of you, its so different and just beautiful with your lovely voice and the amazing musicians.

Since I found this song, I listen her everyday day. Mandy sings it very, very good. I liisten every day to her and to Lola. All the numbers I can find on you tube, beautiful songs and great voice. Beautiful, I hope there comes more from her. I really love it!!!!!!!!!

Just happened across this version and am mesmerised, transfixed, enchanted and a little bit emotional. The best song of all time by a great artist who sadly didn't receive the recognition he deserved during his lifetime taken to a higher plane by Mandy. Sad to hear of the passing of the maverick, rebellious, inspired Ronan O'Rahilly in April this year also.
If you sort the comments into newest first you will find my other three comments . One of them is a reply to somebody who said this is rubbish - I really wanted to give him a piece of my mind, but you know me, I'm too polite ! I was toying with the idea of saying this is better than the original, but I like the " higher plane " description . I can't tell if you are saying this is the best song of all time or the best song by David McWilliams, but I assume the former . While I wouldn't go so far as to say that, I think it's a special song which is definitely as good as anything I have ever heard . Old eyes in a small child's face ....

I'm a bit of a weirdo, and I haven't actually heard any of the famous covers of this song, but I have heard that some twat has actually added his own verse at the end, to give a happy ending . I'm half tempted to listen to Bowie's version, but probably won't . Thanks for your comment, it has restored the balance .

I never thought I'd hear a version of this song, which haunted me since I was 14 years old, to match the original. On the first slow drumbeats I thought, this is going to fail. By the end the hair was standing up on the back of my neck, set to haunt me for whatever time is left.

During the first verse I thought it was spooky, then I read who is singing it, and I think you can tell . The chorus is overwhelming ! Almost the archetypal Radio Caroline ( North ) track, this video is above and beyond ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

I can remember this song from when I used to pick up Radio Caroline on my Dad's old Bakelite valve radio. I probably only heard it twice, but it has haunted me all my life. I can still see the vivid images it first conjured up in my young mind, after all the years. This version is stunning, really powerful - and, just when I thought it couldn't get any better, the soaring auxiliary vocals (is she improvising, or is it written? Whichever, she will be one to watch) and, just to put the top on it, the singing-into-a-paper-cup nod to David McWilliams' original. Finding this made my day. Thank you.

Beautiful version of her father's song. Have always loved this song as it's so poetic and puts amazing images in my mind .
Children with no shoes on their feet . Old crumbling tenements. The life experiences of a now gone generation. The hope and optimism of youth. The melancholy of what might have been. The false comfort of alcohol. A story of a life like this in song touches us . So maybe after the race was run, redemption.

That was utterly wonderful, a great version of a brilliant song. I am a grey haired, cynical old biker in his late 50s, but the final part of the song with the backing vocals brought a lump to my throat.
