  • Natalie Elphicke crossed the floor today to make Rishi Sunak's position even weaker. Her explanation, "From borders to biosecurity, Rishi Sunak's government is failing to keep our borders safe and secure. Lives being lost in the English Channel while small boats arrivals are once again at record levels. It's clear they have failed to keep our borders secure and cannot be trusted."
Many Tories were left bemused that Elphicke, who has always been on the right of the party and just months ago was being hugely critical of Starmer jumped ship!

Jonothan Gullis needs to stop worrying about Natalie Elphicke, and start worrying about how he is going to explain to his electorate why theTory's have gone FAR-RIGHT WING. I think Jonothan will be a one hit wonder, and will be removed by the people of Stoke. Strange how the tables can turn so quickly isn't it!.

So how do we afford the £25 billion annual EU membership fee? More tax?

    • @jackthebassman1
      @jackthebassman1 Місяць тому

@@PollieBrooon-cz5yg You clearly have no idea how the European free trade system works, I’ll explain as simply as I’m able:
      a) we used to receive rebates from the EU
      b) we import 39% THATS THIRTY NINE PERCENT of our food from Europe, which is all subject to import duties, which are paid by you, the customer - unless the importer can afford to absorb the duty, hence the big increase in UK food prices.
      c) EU food standards are rightly very strict (I for one do not wish to eat chlorine washroom chicken from the USA).
      d) significant additional red tape is now required for UK - EU exporters
      e) all other goods imported into the UK from Europe are now subject to import duties as well as VAT in some instances.
We received grants for infrastructure (just one example, the massive and magnificent Liverpool docks area redevelopment was financed by an EU grant).
      f) Goods that we now export to the EU are now subject to import duties, making British goods more expensive.
Additional documentation is needed from EU companies both for all imported an exported goods, putting up UK prices and involving more red tape, many EU companies have ceased activities with the UK due to additional costs and red tape.
      g) Many larger UK companies whose business was centred around European trade have relocated to Europe, losing tax revenue to the UK exchequer and gaining it for the European countries where they now base their trade.
      h) as a nice little kicker, the £ dropped in value by up to 25% making ALL imports significantly more expensive. This was caused by world financial markets fearing the effects of Brexit on the UK economy.
      I) immigration hasn’t been reduced at all in fact it has increased - ALMOST ALL western countries, the EU included, not just the UK are subject to people fleeing poor, oppressive and war torn countries.
France is no longer obliged to stop people trying to cross the English Channel.
      j) the freedom to travel into and through European countries is now governed by old passport requirements.
      k) queues and delays at passport control.
      l) Many UK citizens with property in Europe cannot reside in them permanently.
This is a brief summary of why it was a terrible move to leave our closest free trade partners and natural allies, there are no doubt even more.
I’m not into trading barbs with those I disagree, I’m just explaining briefly why o my knowledge and experience why leaving the EU was a terrible idea, I hope this helps you to understand my reasoning.

@@PollieBrooon-cz5yg I composed a response to you post detailing imports and exports with Europe but as 9ften happens, it failed to post and just disappeared into the ether. So in short the UK imports £432 billion from Europe, that's 48% of the total imports - that was until we decided to exit our agreement. All this was without import duties. Since we left the Eurozone, this is now subject to import (and export) duties as per the WTO agreements. This is a huge hidden amount paid for by the end user You and I. In addition there's massive additional red tape for importers and exporters. If we want to export to Europe, we STILL must comply with European standards. There's much more than this, investigate for yourself, don't play follow the leader.

@@jackthebassman1 Jack I think in time the UK will diversify for food and buy more from the nascent African exporters that the EU is doing all it can to shut down with massive tariffs. Morocco is already scaling up. It's not what I wanted but given Brexit is taking place the logical step is to buy more food from better value producers outside the EU. It would be nice to think that the extra costs being added to imported food from the EU will act as a stimulus to UK producers.

This is all too underhanded for me. The kind of politics that smells of Tory blue. Politics needs to have honesty. I know it's going to take time but the best approach to returning to the EU is with our eyes wide open; and we start with with Brexiteer politicians having the backbone to admit they were wrong, otherwise we continue to hinder ourselves with the damage of Brexit, and the process of fixing Brexit problems.

On this issue I have to disagree with you Liz. To me, it demonstrates a complete lack of good judgement and principle by Keir Starmer. Natalie Elphicke has spent many years running down Labour, has expressed some pretty racist views about those who cross the channel in boats and, in my opinion, is a pretty unsavoury character. Her views, opinions and moral viewpoints are not those of most Labour supporters and voters. Will it backfire on Starmer? I rather think it will. I don’t want anything to stand in the way of getting the Tories out and Labour into government. But, IMHO, this is an appalling own goal by the Labour leader. I’m a lifelong Labour voter and my views are centre-left, but this disgusts me. I shall be voting tactically at the next election for the Lib Dems. Labour don’t stand a chance hereabouts. But if they did, I would definitely be holding my nose to vote for them. Not happy at all about this.

Depends if she really is not seeking re-election. If not then it’s a clever move. Dover while being a major transit port actually has very high unemployment (40%) rate especially among the young and Elphicke’s main hardline position all along has been anti-migration (via small boats) which is still a touch paper issue in coastal towns.
Gullis clearly coached to say ‘illegal migration’ at every point - however it’s not illegal under UK and international law if the migrants report to a customs officer or police officer within 24 hrs of arrival and make a claim for asylum.
The recent law passed by a Sunak attempted to ‘suspend’ international law in the UK to make it illegal but the only way to do that is to leave international bodies like the ECHR and the UN.
The only answer to migration woes (especially so called economic migrants misusing the refugee system) is for a collective change by the West to international law.
The progressives have to understand that if they think that unrestricted migration is feasible then the response will be election of hard right governments. Starmer understands this.
Right now in the ongoing campaign for German elections the anti migrant AfD is running second and with a very persuasive argument.
A smarmy BBC reporter trying to humiliate a candidate got her arse handed to her on the BBC news this evening. She asked him if he was a conspiracy theorist about the ‘Great Replacement’ ides and he calmly offered to take her around German towns and see for herself the effect of several million migrants from the ME and Africa on the nature of German towns. Hundreds of unemployed young men standing around in the town centres and numerous social problems following on. She had no answer.
