I lived by the tracks as a kid and at least three trains went by every night. Been having some insomnia lately, but letting this play in the bedroom made me drop off like a kid again.
The train passing your camera right now is just like the ones I watched when I visited my cousins in Shelbyville Indiana!! The main difference is that there were more different locomotives hauling the freight!! Way back then there were steam trains as well as diesel.
Well I’ve never seen double stacked containers over here in England, but I doubt that we have the need for them. It’s great to see that it’s possible to double stack containers and that they don’t come off the wagon every time the train turns!!
You cannot run them there because space in tunnels, overhead power lines, etc, etc, is simply too small to fit stack trains. Like wise in continental Europe.
Although I admit that there are some gorgeous places in America, I still think England’s best for me!! To be my cup of tea, America would have to be a car drive from home rather than an air flight lasting nearly a whole day!!
Thanks Zachary , I've really enjoyed this , haven't been enjoying much of anything of lately what with illness and other problems , but , all is on the mend , I don't mind the desert scenery of Arizona ,I watched 2 hours yesterday and the final hour or so to day , was that William doing the work at the siding with the extra stacks , enjoyed the plant out out there also all in all , well worth the watch , Looking forward to watching some more professional work from You , Cheers , Daniel !
helmitpeak I checked it again and again, it starts à 17 min and the consist is headed by 2 active locomotives and it seems 5 other are ferried unpowered. I can't see any exhaust smoke after the 2nd loc. Probably newly delivered engines. The painting seems clean.
I'm looking at a shot of a freight passing Pantano, AZ -- there is a row of tall poles on one side of the ROW, with what looks like a single insulator on the top of each pole. No crossarms, and they appear to be fairly new. Anyone know what these are for?
I'm curious about the refrigerated units on a train car as to how long does the fuel last and who's responsibility it is to maintain temps in those trailers? Berries don't last long past 3 days.
John D They are regulated & monitored by the companies that own them by satellite in some cases. They have on-board fuel and generator that suppose to last them some time.
I was outside Barstow in the desert taking pictures of the trains and I got approached by a truck with “railroad security “ who told me to get off the rail road area anywhere near the tracks... never got really close to the tracks or any equipment.
The line is very hilly, but I didn't spend to much time on the flat sections. Train speeds can get up to 70 MPH on the Wilcox Playa east of Dragoon. Personally though I enjoy the slower running on the mountainous sections, as that means I can actually chase the slower-moving trains there.
BNforever2009 Only place in the Country where Main track 1 turns into Main 2. - West of CPSP 988 MT#1 (North Track) is MT#1, East of that CP on the same track it become MT#2. - The same is for MT#2 (South Track) ###### -MT1-######(CP988)######-MT2##### - North Rail (Slow track) West XO East ######-MT2-######(CP988)######-MT1-##### - South Rail (Fast Track) Makes for a confusing run when FRA rides with us, and we get flagged CP988 by the dispatcher.
Well, I would show the entire train, but for most shots I packed up and chased it to the next location down the line. I'd rather get a train at 10 locations then shoot the entire thing and get it at 3 instead, if you know what I mean.
RailfanJunction I guess I am one that wants to see the entire train once and wait for the next one. Chasing them down to see multiple times is just for special runs, like a heritage unit or steam excursion. Too each his own.
And also some people may not want to sit and watch a whole 1.5 mile long train go past. We get the idea lots of different cars. Having it skip through the train length a few times and then see it some where else.. Scenery my friend makes up a huge part of rail-fanning not just car counting.
MrSnowy79 I understand, and most of the time I change up my shots during a train to add variety. I try and chase trains as much as possible, but for those that I filmed the entirety of I was either stuck waiting for them to pass or waiting on another train behind it. Scenery makes up around 90% of my shot selections, but I personally also like to see all the freight cars and shipping containers that make up our rail system. Just personal taste I suppose.
RailfanJunction Yea for sure I agree with that too. I dont mind either. If the location is worthy then watching a whole train go past is great. If the contents of said train is out of the ordinary too. Fantastic work either way mate. Looks good on the big screen :D
A few I'm guessing cause I live near Tucson along the former Southern Pacific route and a few trains pass through every day as well as every night. Tucson has a little shortline at Port of Tucson it's called of Port of Tucson RR I believe and my town has one called San Pedro Valley RR their aren't any railfan videos of them in the area especially at their yard they were San Pedro and Southwestern up until late last year their are a couple of videos of it on UA-cam if their old gp9's that they no longer own in other states. They only have gp30's now I forgot what locomotive they have for their switchers. I'm thinking about getting permission to film at their yard and maybe finding out when they run so I can get some videos made of them their is a rail crossing in saint David they go through that would be a good spot. A lot of the stuff on San Pedro online are photos. one of their locomotives did appear on a railfan Depot video in Wilcox when UP4014 and UP1996 (Southern Pacific heritage unit) came in the early 2010's I think the video is on Facebook. Anyways I hope some people make more videos of that shortline San Pedro and maybe of Port of Tucson
Yep, that was an A10 Thunderbolt II out of Davis-Motham. I tried to get shots of them throughout the trip (As they were either flying patrols or bombing the Wilcox Playa) but they all didn't turn out.
D-M in Tucson is the last A-10 base, Obama is trying to close out the program, but he has a Hawkish John McCain to deal with, and given D-M is the last Armed Forces base in AZ of any size, dropping the A-10 would dismiss a state with incredible flight training conditions. Since 70% of the state is federal land, it's also a great place for bombing training and there is nothing to replace the ugly but incredible A-10 or airborne artillery. We pay for having a leader who grew up hating the military and apparently remains unchanged.
Honestly speaking, I didn't on this particular trip, but I normally use a program called ATCS Monitor which identifies where trains are (No ID's) on a subdivision. It works really well in urban areas with coverage, but it gets spotty in relatively remote areas, unless you have a wireless hotspot to hook up to. I also use a scanner tuned to AAR channel frequencies that I use extensively for listening to dispatchers and train crews talking (It's completely legal). Both help tremendously in knowing where trains are and when they'll be coming.
The Lordsburg Subdivision's nickname of "The Stormy" comes from the line's tendency to have violent thunderstorms during the later summer months (Along with most of Southern Arizona), I was there at the beginning of Summer and missed the worst of it but they do get quite bad.
+RailfanJunction New Mexico gets monsoon storms like Arizona does, esp in the Southern part. I drove through northern New Mexico in August and saw a tornado, up near I-40 which Id guess is BNSF territory. .. due to the SF part of the merger..
Call me crazy, but it still amazes me that railroads continue to allow vandals to spray paint their cars. With all that is available in cheap video camera's, and motion activated technology, why is this still going on? FWIW-I have lived in Arizona since 1974, and I have never heard of the town's you are filming from, must be just RR equipment location or place names unoccupied. Excellent work, I hope you weren't filming in late June of the first of July, 2014, the heat is unbearable. The foliage looks more like April.
+Bobby Paluga its simple follow I-10 through Tucson and you will find most of the towns mentioned. Benson is East of Tucson, Dragoon is east of Benson I think or maybe West.. etc etc etc. Ive seen lots of UP trains while traveling on I-10 near Tucson.. also Ive seen Arizona and California trains near Wickenburg/Agilla AZ and Ive seen BNSF trains near Flagstaff. . Ive never seen any of the ones through Globe/supierior but there are lines there that appear at least to get some use sometimes. BTW people live in Dragoon, Benson, and Tuscon.. where in AZ are you living since 1974?
I did! All of my newer videos (this one is almost 9 years old) have a wind sock on them. Ironically I actually had bought one right before going out to the desert for this trip but it came the day after we left for it
I didn't even pay attention to the date lol. I am "watching" this at work, mainly for the sound, and the wind noise got to be a little much. Anyone else notice #2160 surging at about 1:24:00? Sounds like too much fuel maybe, or the governor oil is low
This is the way I like viewing trains....no commentary, just trains.

I grew up in the high desert of SoCal but I don’t miss the brown! Now I see green everywhere in Georgia! Nice shots....I love the UP trains.
UP #8824 is the first SD70AH unit rec'd by UP. Thanks for the video, i enjoyed it.
Ein wunderschönes Video toll gemacht. Super 🌹
Thanks very much...Enjoyed!!
The train passing your camera right now is just like the ones I watched when I visited my cousins in Shelbyville Indiana!! The main difference is that there were more different locomotives hauling the freight!! Way back then there were steam trains as well as diesel.
32:42, WOW! A CNW loco. Brings back childhood memories from Morrison, IL...
Its one of UP's SD70ACE Heritage fleet locos.
I love that horn on that one too
I'm not sure why, but the sound's of the rails are so satysfying
They are!
I hope you’re having a happy Thanksgiving Day and that all the trains you wanted to film are all filmed.
Most enjoyable video well done!!
Awesome work Zach very very enjoyable nice way to spend an evening!!

Boy that train @22:00 was struggling. Those poor SD-70s were giving it their all!
Yeah! That was the local that interchanges with the Arizona eastern, they tend to get older units
Wow great video.
Very very cool. It's nice to watch :) I love American rail. Greetings :)
You have done a wonderful job. No complaints here!!!
Although I admit that there are some gorgeous places in America, I still think England’s best for me!! To be my cup of tea, America would have to be a car drive from home rather than an air flight lasting nearly a whole day!!

All the engines are active, the ones on the back push to get over the grades. The first engine controls all the others.

Philippe Durand The last 5 engines were being ferried from Tucson to Lordsburg after having been serviced. Hope that clears it up.
Absolutely wonderful video work.
Like it very much. To be from other side of atlantic, this is a very enjoyable way of looking on those fantastic trains. Keep film coming! Thanks, Dan
Great awesome videos and super shots to keep up the wonderful work fellow railfan

excellent video....Did you know that on several occasions on your outing you were practically on top of several abandoned Titan Missile Silos?
Well how 'bout that. I never knew that there were any out there! Thanks for sharing that!

22:00 - Seven engines pulling freight up hill
Yeah!
I can’t see anything between the fence posts!! I bet there’s thin wire between them, but it just doesn’t show on the video!!
What causes the sharp metallic hissing sounds when a train drives through a curve?
Flange noise....
Hi, GREAT videos! Can someone tell me the scenic location of the crossing trains toward the end at about the 2:48 mark??
That's Cienega Creek Trestle :)
@@RailfanJunction THANKS!
Union Pacific, Amtrack, Norfolk Southern, BNSF. Which is your favorite? Me personally I like NS.
Union Pacific, BNSF, and Santa Fe are my favorites.
Union Pacific and Santa Fe!

247:40 to 247:46 Which one of those union pacific's did their horn first? Because I can't really tell which was closer.
Nice shots and subjects but why not a bit of panning and zooming?
I was outside Barstow in the desert taking pictures of the trains and I got approached by a truck with “railroad security “ who told me to get off the rail road area anywhere near the tracks... never got really close to the tracks or any equipment.
They like to seem important, I guess. I suppose it's best to film these trains with a nice long zoom lens so you can shot from wherever.
