You are an actual lifesaver man, it worked quickly and perfectly, unlike the other methods I had no luck with. thank you! i can finally skyrim again! (worked for downgrading to version 1.5.97 as of 3/19/24)
If you're having issues with the steam console not downloading the files you can use steam cmd (you have to log into it with your username/pass) it's a little bit of a longer process, though. Once the files are done downloading it'll tell you where the files are located and you simply copy paste them in order into your skyrim se folder. I looked all over the place and nobody was having this issue as far as I could tell so I figured I'd mention it.
Just a reminder, remember to wait for all the files to download, it should give you the message that all 3 have finished, by mistake I didn't wait and my game ended up missing important files, it let me play for a bit, but then when I started installing the mods there were so many errors that it became unplayable, I had to do a cleanup and start from 0.
Game doesn't even open now lol Edit: Sometimes steam will say the download is finished when it's not quite finished. Def give it a couple minutes even after is says "download complete"
That is good to know. Yeah I sped through the download part so people weren't sitting there waiting though the video to keep it to the point but it can take awhile which I think is some people mistake. Did you get it downgraded?
I was having the same issue. Turns out each "depot" gives its own "download completed" message, so you have to wait for all three messages to appear. I got it to work too, thank you for leaving this comment!
I have never wanted to shake someones hand more so in my life than you my good sir. Thank you for this video! Just followed this step by step and it worked flawlessly.
@@circuitscore I really do appreciate this tutorial. I've been playing Skyrim using my favorite collection from before the update since Friday, it's worked fantastically. still works in 2025, thanks! although I had an issue with getting the 1.5.97 files from the steam console (it just wouldn't run for some reason) so I just got 1.6.640 the way you said to get it, then used best of both worlds downgrader to get the game to 1.5.97
Life saver. Now i dont have to give up on my lorerim run. Accidentally updated when getting a second modpack and thought i lost days of gameplay to the update

Was just about to finalize my Load Order when somehow after a crash my DLC.esm files vanished causing all of my mods to lose masters meaning I had to validate my game files......Unfortunately that meant my game was forcefully updated breaking all my hard work... Glad it worked! I know how you feel. I have messed up plenty of Mod loads in my day where Ive had to start from scratch. Not a great feeling! 16/10/24 Thankyou. Your tutorial saved my game. I have some disability from a brain injury. I have difficulty understanding things sometimes. But I was able to follow your video. And it worked for me. I am so grateful. Thankyou so much
Should we back up our depots on a flash drive for future use in case we suddenly get a new PC or something like that just to be safe? So it can make it easier so we won't have to download it all the time? Or not recommended? Also good idea to turn automatic updates to "Only Update This Game when I Launch it" It SHOULD keep the game from FORCING Skyrim SE to AE. Hope this helps. Something I learned from another video when Fallout 4 pulled this BS. Mods got broken too. :(
Its not a bad idea to backup those depot files just in case there is ever a day that Steam does not allow us to access the old files. You could also backup the game directory files itself after you downgrade. Good idea though! Might as well do both change the appmanifest files to read only and also "Only Update This Game when I Launch it"
Sounds like an issue with Steams servers if you request the same download command twice. I would give it another go and see if it will let you download the file. If that doesn't work might trying using a VPN to download it.
@@circuitscore it was this and then I forgot to downgrade papyrus which took me another 4-5 hours to figure out what the problem was lol, I’m extremely new to modding but it’s unbelievably satisfying
@@gladesucks7907 Oh yeah that would do it since some mods are updated for later versions while other are not. Modding can be frustrating but rewarding it once its all running smoothly!
Sometimes the depot commands will fail and you need to retry it a day later. Also make sure you have enough space on your PC. Even if it seems like you have plenty others have said clearing space on their PC helps allow the depot command to execute for whatever reason.
I'm trying to reinstall Skyrim SE 1.5.97. Everything says its Special Edition, except in the .exe description, where it says its v1.6. Now, when I open the game and try to 'upgrade' the files to the proper AE, Steam is trying to make me repurchase the game instead of doing the upgrade. So, once again, I'm stuck.
This is honestly (kinda) confusing. I did the depot files for 1.5.97 and it mo2 says TESV.exe is missing. And from what i know TESV is oldrim like before SE so like.. huh? Edit: nvm fixed. Ig the depot download didnt fully complete had to redownload it. Worth it. Thank you for this tutorial.
i do the downgrade, it is on the version i want it but when i start it there is only the menu and a black screen behind, no skyrim art it usually has and when i press new game is just closes the game completely
I didn't show it in the video to keep things short, but one of those Depot commands takes a while to download. Make sure all files are completely downloaded before copying them over as we are just replacing the files with an older version of the game. Also make sure your SKSE is for the version you downgraded to.
Are there any other methods aside from using the steam depot console? I have let it sit over 5 hours yesterday with no progress. I have pretty bad/slow internet all things considered, so I highly prefer a progress bar or anything that tells me where it is at or if the download has failed. Thanks! ^^
Hey there. Unfortunately if you are on the latest version 1.6.1170 the only method I know of is to use the depot downgrade. It will take awhile because its essentially re downloading the entire game. If you are on version 1.6.1130 there are downgrade patchers available on Nexus that modify the files in order to downgrade. I believe this method requires less internet however I have not tried it myself so not 100% confirmed. Unfortunately with steam updating automatically on launch most people are on 1.6.1170. www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/57618?tab=description
If i want to play on 1.6.353, I can just downgrade from 1.6.1170 to 1.6.353 using the depots from the description? In a Reddit tutorial they downgrade to 1.6.640 (downloading the 3 depots) then download a fourth depot corresponding to the 1.6.353 .exe
Im not 100% sure why the Reddit tutorial did it that way. I would just make a new folder for 1.6.353 and dump all the depots into that folder. That should make a fresh install of 1.6.353. Replacing the files in your default location would probably work as well.
Help, I keep getting an error when I run MO2 that says "A mod named overwrite was detected, disabled, and moved to the top priority on the mod list. You may want to rename this mod and re-enable it." However whenever I change the name I cant acces the actual overwrite folder. It says it cant find the overwrite file. What could this mean.
@@circuitscore I looked all over online trying find a solution and couldn't find one. I give up and bought AE edition upgrade. Now all mods that didn't worked before now worked. Like I can use DAR mods like 4 directional power attack mod for example.
Hmmmmm I'm not exactly sure what happened. One thing I forgot to mention in the video is the depot downloads can take awhile to complete. Make sure all files downloaded before replacing the files.
I didn't show it in my video but the depot files take a little while to download. Make sure the download finishes before replacing the files. Additionally if you are already using mods make sure you are using the correct version of SKSE64.
@@circuitscore In my case I do not have mods installed and I waited for the download on the Steam console to complete with the three folders and I got a black screen when I started the game and it suddenly closed
ive tried this method and followed all the steps and all i got was application error ive done a few fresh installs and still nothing so i quit bothering to downgrade as its a huge headache
I didn't show it in the video to keep things to the point but the download can take awhile to complete as its just redownloading the entire game. Make sure all depot files finish downloading before replacing the files.
waited for all the depots to complete than did the file replacing i set app manifest to read only than hit play and got this error: Steam Error Application load error 3:0000065432
I followed everything you said but my game crashes at launch now :/ I have the Skyrim Special Edition Version and wanted to download the 1.5.97 version. Do I have to first update it to the Anniversary Edition before downgrading it ?
You don't need to buy the Anniversary Edition however I would update to 1.6.1170 first and then downgrade using my steps. Also keep in mind one of those depot files takes a while to download. Make sure you have download confirmations for all depot commands in the console before replacing files.
its not working for me its only downloading one of the depods and when i open the files they dont seem right, but when i checked another video they seemed fine, so i continued and copied the files onto the game directory, after when i tried to launch the game it wouldnt start, no crash no nothing it just wouldnt start, i had to update the game to fix it, i tried even with steamcmd but for some reason it doesnt let me login into the cmd itself so i cant do it from there either i dont know what to do
If its not downloading 3 separate depots into 3 separate folders something is wrong. Make sure in the console all 3 depots confirm downloading before closing the window. It can take awhile as its essentially redownloading an older version of the game.
eng: It worked successfully, but I have a question: how can I set the other language for example Polish in the game? Because the default is English? PL: Udało się pomyślnie lecz mam takie pytanie: w jaki sposób mogę ustawić język polski w grze? Gdyż domyślnie jest angielski ?
You will have to find the Polish depot files. I am having hard time finding the command however if you can find the Polish depot command its as simple as downloading the files and replacing them in the root directory of Skyrim. Let me search around and see what I can find.
1.6.640 is the anniversary edition. You can have the best of both world running this version. There are very very few mods that only work on 1.5.97 although I have added that options as that version is the goat.
Thank you, but I am more interested in when someone is going to take over the SkyUI project as the current creator has apparently abandoned it for almost seven years now.
Can anybody see the error in the latest mod update.. 1.6.1170 is lower than 1.6.640.. as upgrades rise incrementally x.x.117x is not as incrementally high as x.x.640X. When the increment of .9xxx is 11 they should be saying that the update is 1.7.170 then you will not be confused as to which one IS the latest update... I need to see my therapist now.
so i tried this to be able to get some mods to work. Uninstalled all mods and did this. i tried going to 1.5. I had nexus and steam open and when transferring it kept telling certain files were open elsewhere. Closed and got it to work. Installed SKSE for 1.5 and crashed on startup. Uninstalled SkSE and crashed on startup . Went back to the newest version and edited the file so steam can update the game. Now i cant even get this version of the game to start, tried unistalling and reinstalling like 4 times and verified files. I CANT START UP THE BASE GAME NOW ON THE CURRENT VERSION. Not really blaming anyone but myself, i mustve done something wrong. I just dont know what. If anyone can shoot me in another direction it would help
If I were you I would try to build the game from scratch. To do this redownload the depot files. Make a new folder. Place all files from the depot folder into the new folder. This way you can build a fresh downgraded version of Skyrim. You will have to reinstall all of your mods and go from there.

That's awesome to hear! No problem glad I could help. I tried to make it as easy to follow as possible and to the point. Happy modding :)
Thank you so much man
That's what Im talking about! Happy modding!
Might as well do both change the appmanifest files to read only and also "Only Update This Game when I Launch it"
Just getting back into skyrim. Worked an absolute trick. Big help, thanks so much!
Ive started a new game in Skyrim about 10 times. Never gets old! Haha. No problem though. Glad to hear it worked!
It worked thank you!!
No probs! Happy modding!
by far the best tutorial I have seen. Explained step by step without omitting a single detail. thank you.
You're very welcome! Glad I could help.
I love you man, thank for this tuto, modding skyrim is such an ass pain
No problem! Yeah it can be an absolute pain especially on the later versions of the game. Happy modding!
May the gods give you their protection, delicately pragmatic content, simply phenomenal.
Bless you kind adventurer!
I received this message trying to do the console portion, any idea what it means and how to fix it?
CAPIJobRequestUserStats - Server response failed 2
Sounds like an issue with Steams servers if you request the same download command twice. I would give it another go and see if it will let you download the file. If that doesn't work might trying using a VPN to download it.
Thank you! My Skyrim shadow updated last night
I got you :)
Spent 6 hours troubleshooting yesterday only for this to be the problem. I hate myself sometimes
You get it to work?
@@circuitscore it was this and then I forgot to downgrade papyrus which took me another 4-5 hours to figure out what the problem was lol, I’m extremely new to modding but it’s unbelievably satisfying
@@gladesucks7907 Oh yeah that would do it since some mods are updated for later versions while other are not. Modding can be frustrating but rewarding it once its all running smoothly!
You saved my load order. Thank you.
No problem. Glad it worked!
@@circuitscore The process was super easy and you made things very clear.
no one else got an error when dowloading the second command for 1.6.640?
Sometimes the depot commands will fail and you need to retry it a day later. Also make sure you have enough space on your PC. Even if it seems like you have plenty others have said clearing space on their PC helps allow the depot command to execute for whatever reason.
I'm trying to reinstall Skyrim SE 1.5.97. Everything says its Special Edition, except in the .exe description, where it says its v1.6. Now, when I open the game and try to 'upgrade' the files to the proper AE, Steam is trying to make me repurchase the game instead of doing the upgrade. So, once again, I'm stuck.
Did you try the process again? Sounds like the exe either didn't download the right one or it wasn't properly replaced by windows?
This is honestly (kinda) confusing. I did the depot files for 1.5.97 and it mo2 says TESV.exe is missing. And from what i know TESV is oldrim like before SE so like.. huh?
Edit: nvm fixed. Ig the depot download didnt fully complete had to redownload it. Worth it. Thank you for this tutorial.
Yeah the depot files take awhile to download. I edited that part out to get the point. Should have mentioned that.
@@circuitscore no you’re good. I figured you did ig for me it just bugged out on the 7gb one bc it was missing some files.
i do the downgrade, it is on the version i want it but when i start it there is only the menu and a black screen behind, no skyrim art it usually has and when i press new game is just closes the game completely
I don’t know how to work computers, I’m honestly struggling. This video helped somewhat but when we moved the data over I got lost
It just replacing the files with the downgraded files. Just replace the files from the depot folder and you should be good to go!
omg i would have lost my mind without your help, much thanks, you're the greatest
You're very welcome!
Not 100% sure as Ive never had this problem before. Is your Skyrim directory pointing to the correct location in MO2 after the downgrade?
absolute lifesaver!!!
That's what I do! Glad to hear it worked!
It worked my game has been downgraded but now. I can't load the game.
What error message are you getting? And which version did you downgrade to?
@@circuitscoreThe Version I downgraded to was 1.5.97. From 1.6.640, I can't remember the error message now.
@@circuitscore I looked all over online trying find a solution and couldn't find one. I give up and bought AE edition upgrade. Now all mods that didn't worked before now worked. Like I can use DAR mods like 4 directional power attack mod for example.
Thanks a lot man! It worked!
Boom! That's what I like to hear!
I followed your exact tutorial but my Skyrim version is still 1.6.1170. I’m not sure where I went wrong.
Hmmmmm I'm not exactly sure what happened. One thing I forgot to mention in the video is the depot downloads can take awhile to complete. Make sure all files downloaded before replacing the files.
ty nice and fast guide.
No problem!
Você me ajudou muito! Vi alguns tutoriais, mas apenas o seu funcionou, obrigado!
Sem problemas! Que bom que este tutorial funcionou para você.
Excellent guide! Thank you!
No problem!
even the game v1.6.640 stops crashing after new game
It should still work fine! Make sure all of the depot files fully downloaded during this process.
@@circuitscore i downloded exactly all files in the video but after launcing new game it crashes and exit
Thank you Dragonborn! You saved my Skyrim.
Glad I could help!
Worked like charm
Happy modding!
So after I move the old depot files to my Skyrim I can no longer launch skyrim. What could be causing this.
I've got the same issue
I didn't show it in my video but the depot files take a little while to download. Make sure the download finishes before replacing the files. Additionally if you are already using mods make sure you are using the correct version of SKSE64.
@@circuitscore In my case I do not have mods installed and I waited for the download on the Steam console to complete with the three folders and I got a black screen when I started the game and it suddenly closed
@@xavix017 did you ever find a fix to your issue.
Very helpful guide. Thank you!
No problem! Glad I could help!
Very nice vid. Thanks for sharing. Now I can play skyrim again!
Thank you! Also that's what I like to hear! Love me some modded Skyrim.
ive tried this method and followed all the steps and all i got was application error ive done a few fresh installs and still nothing so i quit bothering to downgrade as its a huge headache
I didn't show it in the video to keep things to the point but the download can take awhile to complete as its just redownloading the entire game. Make sure all depot files finish downloading before replacing the files.
waited for all the depots to complete than did the file replacing i set app manifest to read only than hit play and got this error:
Steam Error
Application load error 3:0000065432
@@circuitscore nvm i found a fix for the app eror all i had todo was exclude steam from antivirus scan its working now i appreciate the tutorial
Glad to hear it! Yeah sometimes the antivirus can cause problems with modding.
I followed everything you said but my game crashes at launch now :/
I have the Skyrim Special Edition Version and wanted to download the 1.5.97 version.
Dzięki za pomoc. co prawda nie udało mi się tego zrobić. lecz dzięki twoim poradnikom i tak zaszłem dalej niż kiedykolwiek
for Polish after 3 main deport folders download this
download_depot 489830 489839 176511637554234126
So you’re telling me it’s been 3 years and I still can’t upgrade to anniversary edition and play with mods on PC?
1.6.640 is the anniversary edition. You can have the best of both world running this version. There are very very few mods that only work on 1.5.97 although I have added that options as that version is the goat.
Who says there are no heroes left?
😂
Thank you, but I am more interested in when someone is going to take over the SkyUI project as the current creator has apparently abandoned it for almost seven years now.
At least SkyUI still works as far as I can tell 😂
Can anybody see the error in the latest mod update.. 1.6.1170 is lower than 1.6.640.. as upgrades rise incrementally x.x.117x is not as incrementally high as x.x.640X. When the increment of .9xxx is 11 they should be saying that the update is 1.7.170 then you will not be confused as to which one IS the latest update... I need to see my therapist now.
Bethesda logic! 😂
Thank you very much for explaining how to get my mods back after Todd Howard turned them off. Again.
Glad I could help!
I'm trying to install 1.5.97, I did everything you said up to 5:05 but when I run skyrim it CTD after I hit load on a saved file.
Have you downloaded BEES? It is linked in the description and is needed to run the game with AE content.
@@naevyskrisvalur3865 I had to reinstall both patches and it fixed it. Thanks!
Sorry I wasnt able to help. Just got back from vacation. Glad you got it working again!
I cant believe it your Dragonborn-- nah but this actually helped me so much a real this is what the skyrim community's about
Agreed! We all gotta stay tight!
Wow, my mind is officially blown. I can’t believe this actually worked.
You know it! Happy to help.
so i tried this to be able to get some mods to work.
@@circuitscore Thanks for the reply, so i think i did something like this. For some reason after doing this it wouldnt work when installed on either one of my ssd, of which i have 2. I had to install it on my HDD then it started up fine. I copdied that file just to have a backup. I moved the file to my ssd and verified and it worked. Now i just uninstalled through steam and reinstalled to the ssd directly just to make sure steam was installing it correctly, and it works. The thiing is though, i cant downgrade this way with out it corrupting the whole game. Idk why, i did eaxctly what you did. Either way thanks for the reply. All this happened cuz i couldnt get npcs to were cloaks and hoods in wet and cold lmao.
dude thank you for having everything there to copy and paste
No problem! It drives me crazy when UA-camrs put a command in their video and then don't put it in the description. Or essential links as well.
Did all the steps. My Skyrim won’t open now and there is no error code
I didnt show it in the video to keep it short but some of the depot files can take awhile to download. Did all files download correctly?
