Orient Triton vs Orient Kamasu Diver

  • I contrast two popular affordable divers from Orient. The beautiful red Kamasu and the sharp blue Triton (yes I know Orient changed the name to Neptune.... silly) It's not hard to see why some watch lovers are passing on Orient's cousin Seiko and getting into value divers like these two. Let me know what you think!
I got the Kamasu here. It will be given to Spencer (local youth) this weekend. Congrats Spencer!

I bought the Triton from a viewer for this video (Thanks Hector!) and I'll be selling it here pretty soon. So email me if you would like it for $260. USA only please

Just got the Kamasu and it's an amazing watch. Bought it as didn't have any red in my collection since i sold my Tudor Black Bay red bezel years ago.... it's a great watch. Wears so well on a 6.75 inch wrist. Just a fantastic everyday wear. Came off the bracelet and went onto a nato. The finishing isn't all that but i don't look at it like i look at my mid tier or premium watches....

Seeing as Seiko stopped manufacturing the SKX line, Kamasu is the way to go if you want a good Japanese diver which isn't absolutely massive. I guess Mini Turtle is nice as well but those are starting to become rare as well.

The Kamasu crown is a dumpster fire to screw back in. It has about a half a thread that's very hard to catch and it's very small, so it's hard to grip with your thumb and index. That said, it's a very nice watch. I love the bezel. Unless you want the Green or Red, I would Go with a Mako II. It's half the price of a Kamasu and, with the exception of the bezel which is not bad looking anyway, looks just as nice. I have the Blue Mako II and the dial is gorgeous. I have the Green Kamasu and, FYI, the Green of the dial is much darker in person than it appears in the Orient promotional pictures.

I wish the Triton’s minute hand was longer and the asymmetrical dial takes some getting used to, but I wear my Triton more than any of my other watches. It easily has the best lume of any of my watches, both in brightness and distribution.

Good review Bruce, you emphasized the strong points of both watches. I've had the blue triton for more than 1 1/2 years now and it's an amazing watch, though its size and lug-to-lug length does not make it a watch for everyone. Its only weak points, to my mind, are its crown (it does not screw and unscrew as well as the crown of a seiko diver) and its bracelet. I tried the strapcode angus jubilee, but the end links of that bracelet add a few more mms in total lug-to-lug length, making it borderline for my 7 1/4" wrists. For me, it wears most comfortably on a rubber strap. I wear mine on a blue, with red underside, barton elite silicone.
The kamasu's lug-to-lug length makes it more versatile for bracelet and strap options. I hope strapcode makes an alternative bracelet, with solid end links, for the kamasu. That would elevate the watch on a whole new level.

Very good review Bruce! I must admit I like the brushed hands. Why? Because it’s hardly ever done. Everybody high polishes their hands. Easier to do it that way. But taking the time to brush them is showing that they thought this thru. It’s a real diver and that anti reflective brushed hand set and bezel are perfect along with sapphire crystal. Kudos to Orient for taking the time to show they think about what it’s true purpose is. Now I’m thinking, why did I let it go?!!! Haha

Sounds like the Triton has the Seiko style 120 click where the bezel, itself, is actually a 60 click with the alternating spring. I always clip one of the raised springs down just enough to make it a tight 60 click bezel instead of that crappy, spongy click and half feeling 120 click bezel. The Kamasu has the same exact spring as an skx but it has an actual 120 bezel so both raised springs are hitting at the same time. Much better system

Triton is a great example of ballancing the cost of the end product. Add on one place and make a cut on the other.
They included (by some reports, mine gains 10 seconds per day, that is why I can't agree) a high grade movement so they made everything else (except the case back which looks great, the case is also nice and heawy) cheap.
The screw stem for the crown is much thinner than the one on mako, two turns are enough to get it unscrewed. With a crown that huge prone to get hit, two turns may as well be enough to get it opened by accident. It is also impossible to screw tightly.
The Bezel feels cheap unlike the one on the Mako with nice clear clicks, tne insert is badly fitted and finished, the bracelet clasp is made of the thinnest possible metal that still enables it to stay in one piece. I must say that at this price point they should do it better.
Orient guys know how to make a great value diver, have done it before with Mako. I own both and Mako feels far more solid. I am not saying that Triton is terrible or a bad watch over all, it just does not feel like a 380 EUR piece, I would expect this quality and preformance at 200 or maybe a bit over. Get a Steinhart or a Seiko baby tuna/Samurai, much better deal for the price.

I have the blue Triton / Neptune and the Orient Blue-ray II. I am currently looking for a green dial Komatsu to add to my collection. I agree with you about the tritons hands and I feel the second hand should be red tipped to match the power indicator. I wish the power indicator was at 12 and the date window at the 6 to make it more uniform, but that's just my OCD kicking in. Great video Bruce! Really like the look of the Triton even though I've never own an Orient! Which is weird considering how many brands I've owned over the years, seems like Orient does get lots of love in the watch community so I would have no problems buying the brand and have always thought with all the Bambino styles at crazy cheap prices the brand has a lot to offer the customer.. With the Kamasu I don't care for the bezel with the bigger indent at every 10 minute mark, know lots of micro brands use a bezel like this and think Orient was the first to put it on one of their watches.. Really not into the bracelet without SEL but strapcode makes so many aftermarket bracelets that fit Orient I'm sure there's many options for a better bracelet in the 100 dollar range..

The only improvement to me, over my Mako USA, with either of these watches, is the Triton's power indicator. Where is the value in these new Orient models?

It's a different style watch. The Mako USA is also a much larger watch.

I would sacrifice not having sapphire, spend a bit more and go for the Sumo instead, like you said the finishing is amazing on the Seiko. Ps how are Orient Star divers compared to the Triton? I have an OS dress watch and the finishing is superb for $250.

Kamasu will outsell Triton by 10 to 1.

  • @VersedNJ

Have both, the Triton is out for repair. The Kamasu for the money is fantastic, was just setting the time and date. The Triton is in a different class. But love the color on the Kamasu. Also to be honest, the Triton is an older model by several years. So I give it a pass.

You have watch the macro view. I took a magnifying glass to the case of a recent purchase (one that has been praised amongst reviewers for finish) and was sadly disappointed.

Let’s vote, who here would pay $35 more for a decent bracelet (solid end links with good springbars, solid clasp). It shouldn’t cost more, in china they can sell a bracelet even better that what I described, sell it for $20 and make good profit (rolex bracelet clones). This is the issues with Mako/Ray/Kamasu, they have the poorest end-links I ever say and poor 1.5mm springbars that can barely keep the watch on your hand. At least if we had a decent aftermarket option, hut we don’t, excepting Strapcode for Mako/Ray which is ugly, poor fit and way too expensive for the quality.

I'm sure many would pay 35 more but there is no way in heck a decent bracelet would only add 35 to the retail. I would say it would bump up at least 150

    • @d3xmeister
      @d3xmeister 4 роки тому +1

Bruce Williams There are already much better bracelets for less than that on the market, made for other watches. Even the overpriced ones from strapcode cost under $60. Orient can even keep the current bracelet which is fine and just change the end links, springbars and the clasp I think at least this can be done for $35 max. Anyway, great video as usual, thank you 👍

@@d3xmeister I've learned just because it can be done cheaply in China, dosen't mean it will. A Seiko Epson owned brand would take the opportunity to make ample profit on a upgraded bracelet even if it seems trivial to us. It helps them justify the couple hundred dollar difference between the two models

The minute hand on the Triton is quite shorter than that on the Kamasu. It's a pet-peeve of mine when the hands don't reach the designated markers. Also not a fan of the silicone ring on the crown on the Triton. Ruins the look for me, Other than these two negatives, the Triton is obviously the better watch.

How difficult is it to find a bezel insert replacement for the Kamasu? It has those indents, so not perfectly round.
