  • There's so much more that I should have brought up. The comedy, the action, I regret not bring that up, but I guess I was just really into the story and character development this time. Which I could have gone more in depth with. Maybe in another video.

Love the video Kaid, always happy to see more content from you.
Good ranking of the seasons. It just shows how difficult it was back in the day to make 20-22 episodes a season rather than the 10-12 we get now. Agree completely on the top 3. Even though S2 is when I fell in love with Buffy, being an Angel hater takes it down slightly in my estimation 😅 Although the introduction of Spike is a plus.

I'm still gutted we never got the 'Ripper' series. Great ranking I completely agree about season 2 it had so much wasted potential I would love to know what the original plan was for the anointed one was there must have been something more. Season 5 was amazing right down to the 'previously on' for the finale episode. Fantastic video thank you.

There were too many missed opportunities! The Anointed One, Britney Spears as the robot in season five, the animated series. Ripper would have been so good toooooo!

AHHH!! Your hopes have been fulfilled! I super enjoyed watch this video! And subscribed! Im so happy I found this small corner of the interwebs... consisting of other Buffy nerds as big as I am! I know every episode, word for word and never tire of having Buffy as my comfort food. Badass that you have a "Five By Five" tattoo! ❤️🙂

5, 3 and 2 are also my top 3, but in a different order. 3 will always be my favorite, and I've always felt seasons 2 and 3 to be very connected, two parts of the same narrative arc. So, for me it's 3,2,5. But it's very close. Then I'd switch 6 and 7 at the end. Season 6 has grown on me through the years. Season 7 is just all over the place. Starts off really well, but it quickly loses focus. It has some great episodes, though.

Oof, season 6 ranked last? That's crazy talk. It's my favorite. The problem is that you think television is only for entertainment. No, television is an art form and that is why Buffy is studied in academia.

    • @reelqueer
      @reelqueer  6 місяців тому

I mean, I don’t watch my videos back, except for when I edit them, but I don’t ~think~ that I specifically stated that I believe television is just made for entertainment? Of course all media is a form of art, I didn’t find that I was dismissive of that. I’m someone with an attention disorder and plenty of anxiety, when I get in front of the camera to do videos like this, I usually write down what I want to say and then I lose it all because I don’t want to just sit there and read from a piece of paper, so a lot of what I would like to talk about it lost and I just go on tangents, which doesn’t help too much, especially when talking about the complex nature of all that’s done in a script, the direction or even production of something.
There’s allegory and metaphors sprinkled throughout the whole show, but I don’t think my opinion of season six should be dismissed because of how you thought I perceived the show. I’m glad that you enjoyed season six, the majority of people don’t, though. Satisfyingly enough, I share that same opinion with Sarah Michelle Gellar; that’s the only validation I need. Haha. The series had its moments of darkness, however, season six was like nothing that had come before it. Is it nice to see some emotional depth?
To see Buffy process her trauma, to explore her feelings of betrayal by the group of friends she loved, protected and had grown with, to see such a lovable character deal with the aftermath of dying, losing her mother and then being torn from heaven? Of course it is, who doesn’t want to watch a show with as many layer as it has?
Buffy was never about being a super dark show with sexual assault and edgy adult situations, a ton of sex, losing yourself because you don’t know how to process everything that’s happened to you and find comfort in what you know is wrong or is sure to hurt you… sure, season six didn’t deal with light subjects, but after a stellar season five and seeing Buffy having her breakdowns when losing her boyfriend, dealing with her mom’s illness, taking responsibility of Dawn, it was all done in a way that was tasteful, well written, challenged the audience more in terms of grief, depression, anger, but it never lost sight of what Buffy is. A feel good show that dipped its toes into horror, humor, drama. It’s a show that can make you feel on top of the world, yes, because of entertainment, however, it’s still a show that makes you appreciate the work, and art, that goes into making a television show…. So, yes, while I love to be entertained, I can still recognize that there is nuance to a TV show. If I came off as dismissive of that, it wasn’t my intention.

@@reelqueer exactly at 4:30 you state "This is a television show. We watch this for entertainment".
I also really don't think Buffy is meant to be a feel good show. It's fine if you want to share SMG's opinion on season 6 and are happy with it, but that's definitely not how writers of the show, its creator Joss Whedon (yes, whether one likes it or not, when assessing a work of art, one has to take the creator into consideration regardless of their behavior in real life) see it. Whedon is an existentialist heavily influenced by mid-20th century French philosophy, and it is no coincidence that Buffy gets increasingly darker with each passing season as a statement on the ever-present threat of nihilism in modern life. When depression is a reality, the meaningless of life is all-consuming and that is exactly what season 6 of Buffy fearlessly and thoroughly explores.
Season 6 is precisely there to break with any preconceived formula of the show. Most fans may not like it (though I argue that more and more people as they also grow into adulthood and older fans do like it and even love it as I do), but CRITICS, who are there to regard a TV show through an analytical and artistic lens do. Paste Magazine's Tim Porter said this when ranking the seasons of the show:
"Season six remains the highlight. You won’t find a more skilled extended exploration of existential turmoil on the big or small screen. And I’m not talking “woe is me” teenage angst, but a genuine search for what it means to be human. It’s Bergman for the masses."
I don't think anything else needs to be said when Ingmar Bergman is evoked. Season 6 is challenging, profound art, which also has enough levity to contain a musical (my favorite TV episode of all time) as well as the episode "Tabula Rasa" (probably the show's funniest episode).

@@vodkatonyq well, thanks for the time stamp. Haha. I mean, does anyone go into a show thinking, “god, I really hope I’m not entertained.” As for what a critic thinks, sure, they carry wait in what they say, especially what they have such a revered platform to do so, that’s not the end all be all. At the end of the day they’re just another person sharing their opinion of something or elaborating on what they feel the deeper meaning of the work is. Not to discredit them, they went to school, they learned to look at something and analyze every last detail. I would argue that a lot of people aren’t going into a show to find artistic value, if they were, many great shows would have last more than one or two seasons. I love that about media, though, it is subjective. Some people go into not expecting much, but near the end, find more than they were looking for. We don’t all come away from it feeling or thinking the same thing.
As for SMG not being a fan of that season, my intention isn’t using it as a sort of “gotcha”, it does however make me feel a little more valid in my opinion, that is my own, so it doesn’t have to carry weight or matter to any individual, it’s just how I felt.
Sure Joss may have set out to deliver his work in a specific way, may have been inspired by others that came before him, but once your body of work is released u ti the wild, an audience is going to make of it as they see fit.
I agree that it’s inspiring to see the show take on heavy subject matter and become something more than a “monster of the week” show, I do, however, believe that when Marti Noxin became the show runner, the show started leaning in a different direction. Maybe to bring back audience members it lost to Angel, those that enjoyed the darker tone, but that’s just me speculating.
Whichever way you cut it, it’s not all that important. You’re going to hold season six in a higher regard than myself and there’s no problem with that. I’m glad you like it, I was just impartial.
I would agree with Season 6 being there to break with any preconceived formula, it just feels disjointed from the entire show, especially when you consider Season 7 trying heavily to pivot back to what it was before. I’m happy that it’s there because I get to spend more time with those characters… Once More with Feeling is the only musical I like and Tabula Rasa is a show stealer.
