      Years ago when I was a kid we were visiting my aunt and she had a 65 Chrysler Imperial. She took us for a ride in it and I was in the front passenger seat when she showed us the A/C. It was the first time I was in a car with A/C and it was cool both figuratively and literally as icicles formed on the blower vents so as a kid I thought all car A/Cs did that but I guess it was just the Chryslers back in the day

    I can tell you after years of dealing with GM trucks and SUVs from 2000-2006 almost every transmission failure I've seen comes down to three things
    1. Neglect. Failing to ever change the transmission fluid and filter within a reasonable time. I see these 4L60s fail all the time around 150k and the trans fluid is black as oil and burnt from years of hard use and neglect.
    2. Worse, the rare transmission fluid change where the lube shop backflushed the transmission. NEVER do this, you will kill the transmission within a few thousand miles after that. Used car dealers are notorious for this as well.
    3. Abuse. The death of truck transmissions is when you get stuck and "rock" the transmission shifting between reverse and drive or 1st gear. This will destroy a transmission and even the transfer case which is normally something that never fails. If you see evidence a used truck was off roaded, take a really hard look at the transmission before buying.

      @seanhealey5931 Місяць тому +6

      Agreed. My father-in-law has a bullet proof 3800 but the car will be scrapped long before that engine fails because he just won't let me drain and fill the transmission fluid. It's 18 years old now and not a good idea to change it. Sad.

      Ok, from The Snow Belt of The SouthSide (Chicago), lemme get this straight. Back in the 20th century before traction control and darn near everything was rear-wheel-drive, we were told to "rock" our car out of a parking space or wherever you got stuck. Now I'm hearing to do it SLOWLY. I also hear to Never let a Place like Aamco transmissions "power flush" your tranny; that your tranny gets used to the fluid in there. Just do a simple drain and fill. Isn't it the computer that adjusts to your driving habits?? Your comments'll be appreciated.

    • @bourbonlover7158
      @bourbonlover7158 29 днів тому

      With an auto you should never have to change the filter. Just the fluid. If the filter gets plugged up something is breaking down inside. Lots of trannys now that you can't change the filter too.

    I'd personally expect to get to 300k miles on the same engine/transmission in a Ford F-150 with a 3.5L Ecoboost engine and proper maintenance these days with plenty of towing capacity.
    While there is some merit to the added complexity means more breaking points argument, I've never believed parts are predestined to fail. Some parts fail; most in the first years of operation. After that, the properly maintained parts are the ones that last.
    But, I mostly worked on things that get millions of miles (with turbos); not hundreds of thousands, so my perspective may be a little different.

    I have a 2007 Toyota Avensis with a 2.2 litre D4D diesel engine and, old and age-marked it may be, it's still a fantastic car returning circa 40 mpg on a 104 mile trip and (if it was legal) the capacity to drive at over 100mph.
    Here in the UK, all cars over three years old are subject to a compulsory test (known as the MOT), if the car does not pass this test, it is illegal to use it on the road until it passes a re-test (you are allowed to drive it to the test centre for this!!).
    If there are non-serious faults, these will be designated as "advisories" and listed on the certificate. This week mine was shown with 'advisories' both rear coil springs were corroded. Do I replace these springs or can I get away with a scrub down and a spray with protective paint? Remembering that road safety is paramount, rather than a "bodge job".
    Your videos are entertaining and very instructive - thank you.

    The Chevy trailblazers …the older ones…with the inline 6 gets 15 -19 at best for gas mileage …the v8 versions get better gas mileage then the smaller engines do….of course we would be getting 50 mpg if they’d stop mixing the fuel with ethanol and water

    Talk about a difference in engines my Tige 20V ski wakeboard boat had a 5.1L V8 in it. It turned out 340hp and had plenty of torque to pull multiple slalom skiers at the same time. If you know anything about ski/wakeboard boats, torque is needed to get slalom skiers up and out of the water. In the 2000's this was a common horsepower for the GM Vortec Engine. It had no high pressure EFI or pollution controls. .Numerous boat builders used this engine because of its longevity. It was not uncommon for these engines to turn over 3000 rpm for an extended amount of time when pulling skiers.

They have a Ram 1500 trans on same teardown bench. Pooched after only 68000. The reason? Aluminum planetary gears crunched. Anything to make lighter is going too far.....

    I have to pull 19000lbs regularly and it has to plow snow in the winter with a 900lb snow plow hanging off the front all winter.
    Not interested in diesel’s as they really aren’t much better these days then the big V8’s offered by Ford and GM.
    What truck would you recommend these days? ( currently running a F-250 with the 7.3 Godzilla V8 )

    The physics of energy will demoonstrate that there are no free lunches every time. You can be pulling nothing but helper locomotives with feather weight batteries and the whole thing is guaranteed to stop running eventually. No true perpetual energy. Energy will not be lost but it will definitely change form it an unuseable way.

    From your image the English train looks like an electric locomotive running off of overhead line. A lot of trains (about 30%) in Europe and Asia still run off overhead lines. Many trains and trollies in the US used to be electric with overhead lines. Chicago, Philly and other East Coast cities still run electric locomotive. Plus all subways are electric. And finally all diesel locomotives are actually diesel-electric locomotives. From what I have read it was GE that killed electric trains when they developed the diesel-electric. (Read bribes and low-ball prices to begin with.) Kind of like what GM did to passenger trains.
    If GM vehicle are now only good for 50,000 to 60,000 miles, they are back to the normal service life before a major rebuild was needed back in the 1950's. Of course back them you could actually overhaul an engine or buy a good factory rebuilt engine for less that $500. Now just a rebuilt 2.7 engine is over $4600.
