  • Not long after his acquittal on criminal charges of overprescribing powerful medications to Elvis Presley and several others, Dr. George Nichopoulos sat down for an exclusive interview with CNN's Peter Arnett.
This is Dr. Nick's candid telling of his story. Also appearing in the program were George Klein and Billy Smith, who reminisce with Dr. Nick and Peter Arnett at a table next to the Graceland swimming pool.

As a life long Elvis fan I always thought Dr. Nick got a bad rap. He was trying to help a addict. Elvis was a awesome entertainer a legend. He was so far gone I really don’t think anything could have been done to save him from himself. Rip Elvis you can rest forever. You will not be forgotten.

Elvis ran from the “CALL of GOD” on his life period.
His lifestyle was one of rebellion ,and guilt..and it all turned into a cesspool-of-drugs, plus excessive behavior.
Satan destroys period. His goal was to kill off Elvis as he was the Master of Elvis choice.
This is the reason he kept going back to singing Gospel Songs. He was trying to find 🎵”””PEACE OF MIND”” very song he sang..Going to the Chapel 💒
Elvis was truly Tormented➡️ Please read about the--First King 🤴 of Israel 🇮🇱 named SAUL.

I feel so sad for Elvis, he was so broken after losing his mother and he clearly had depression too toward the end of his life but who knows he probably had it far longer than that and didn’t know how to cope, I wish he had gotten himself some help he deserved that much. Reading about him more and more and I just can’t help but love him terribly, too bad I was born late:(

    • @sandralybrand9407

Depression is genetic. Gladys suffered severe depression and drank to cope with it, which is what killed her because she had liver disease which was related to alcohol use. My mother and her siblings all suffered from it, drank excessively and died young. My siblings all younger than I died before age 50(as did my mother and her siblings) I've suffered from depression my whole life, but didn't go that route of drinking and drugs, but it's a fight everyday. I'm 73 now and consider myself fortunate.

I'm the biggest fan of the greatest entertainer of all time Elvis, saw him in Atlanta in 1972 I was only 9. I'm a trauma doc for 43 years and all Elvis fans have to understand that in the 70s there was no addition treatment like today. Dr. N and people around Elvis tried to stop him even to the point of a interview and book. Yes it still makes me sad today after all these years, because he was a great person who got lost in who he was. He had a hard time with divorce, career, age, and borden. Nobody is to blame when your Elvis you did not walk his shoes. I will say there were so many warnings before he died, but here we are, sad

Did you not see the interview where he was questioned as to WHY he prescribed so much medication to Elvis when the pharmacist records were looked at???!! Just because he asked for it doesn't mean he should give it to him, if he cared about his patient he would have sat down with Elvis's family n voiced his concern n suggested rehab. Alot of ppl have gotten over their addiction...sadly as I've stated above Elvis was pushed to perform when he needed rest by his manager n Nick helped him drive Elvis to his death. Whether you accept that or not is your decision. VERNON was wrong to allow it n so was Priscilla, everyone complained of his addiction but no one did anything to change it, his Memphis Mafia friends knew this but they did not have authority to have anything done.

His own aunt brought him one of the packets that killed him. Elvis depended on other people. Maybe if one or two bodyguards tries to intervene, they get fired. If EVERYONE intervened, well, he can't fire them all, now can he? These people keep hiding under the claim that Elvis didn't take no for an answer. Well, tough shit. Do the right thing anyway. If the entire family and entire crew intervene, what's he going to do? They all saw what was happening and unlike Elvis, THEY were not powerless to stop it. Watch his last recorded concert. He can hardly speak. He can hardly move. He's incoherent. He speaks in tongues at one point. He's dying before their very eyes and his father does nothing. His crew do nothing but take the money. Erica, you are 100% correct. This "doctor" claiming to be helping Elvis wrote prescriptions for no less than 10,000 pills in the year 1977 alone. He finally did lose his license in 1993, but it should have been done many years before. Real physicians that have their patients true health and well being in mind do NOT do all of the things you mentioned. Truly unethical saying the very least.

It was Colonel Parker and Elvis’ own kindness that killed him. He was putting out 4 albums per year, doing 4 shows per day sometimes, and putting out several other singles and TV specials. The only reason he had to do this was because he had too many people in his entourage and he spent all of his money on cars, houses, etc. for the people around him. So he didn’t have any choice but to work himself to death and he was also pressured by Parker to do more and more shows because he had a serious gambling problem and got 50% of everything they made. They told him to take a long break and fire all of those people and he replied “I can’t, I’ve got too many people on my payroll that depend on me.” Look at the movie years, he was perfectly healthy because he had some short periods of time to rest and making movies aren’t as demanding as touring all the time. If he was financially able to tour and do what he wanted to do, he would probably still be alive today.

Actually after hearing about everything, while the Colonel didn't make his life any easier, I think Elvis ultimately did it to himself. Fame went to his head and he had a temper that nobody wanted to cross. I don't think the Colonel is exactly responsible anymore, the doctor doesn't seem to be lying her and it adds up to information that I've gotten about his death. Elvis did seem to go behind this doctor's back to get drugs the night he died. He got a package from his stepbrother, from Nick his doctor but also had his stepbrother go to a pharmacy earlier that day to get pills then he had his aunt call up the doctor's secretary to get medication. She was reluctant to but eventually gave in giving him a smaller dose. Before that Elvis had tried to call for his stepbrother again but he had disappeared. I speculate that his stepbrother didn't want to face him again. So he made himself scarce. Anyways Elvis' lifestyle was awful. He would call people up early hours of the morning to play racquetball and do other things then down pills to get to sleep. He was also taking pain killers so I wonder if he took them for real pain or for emotional and drug abuse reasons. He was actually known to get extremely nervous before shows so there could have been drug abuse to calm himself down for that reason. I do agree with you though that he was surrounded by "yes men" who would just go along with anything his did because they were financially supported by him. That's evident with everyone agreeing to his absurd demands during the early hours of the morning. I don't care who you think you are, that's messed up and someone needed to tell him no, it's 2am, go to bed.

Poor man. I don't know how he did it for so many yearsif he didn't take opiets. Thus addiction .Pain comes from your body being just unable to cope . Why people don't have empathy towards him . I just can't understand. Elvis needed help way back in the early 1960's. But back then Doctors gave patients opiets , sleeping pills like candy. Not today. Things changed. Mid 1970's Elvis was a Zombie, basically . His demise was his insomnia and anxiety.

@Artemis Fowl You are full of shit, not one word you said is true, Elvis died as a result of his addiction and lifestyle and it caught up with him the last 10 yrs of his life. Read his medical records and autopsy reports that have been released. He had significant atherosclerosis in his coronary vessels, aorta, and cerebral arteries. His heart was twice the normal size due to high blood pressure. He had an antitrypsin deficiency, which is a rare genetic condition that causes emphysema. His autopsy copy lists 10 different drugs in his serum-including the metabolite of diazepam (Valium)- methaqualone, phenobarbital, ethchlorvynol, and ethinamate. Codeine was present at a level approximately 10 times those concentrations found therapeutically. The autopsy also lists his weight at 350 pounds. Cortisol blood tests indicated adrenal insufficiency due to excess cortisone administration. He had a gastric, bleeding ulcer and hepatitis that his physicians also believed were related to excess cortisone. He was not only receiving meperidine from a physician, but he had also been using many abusable drugs. He was given methadone to withdraw from the opioids and suppress withdrawal symptoms. He overdosed 4 times, he was resuscitated 3 of those times. His drug abuse led to falls, head trauma, and overdoses that damaged his brain. At the time he died, he was essentially non-functional and required constant nursing care. The colon problem you mentioned was "Megacolon" due to laxative abuse, caused by drug abuse. The man was a mess of his own making.

His unkind manager according to documentary reviewed, gambled much of Elvis finances, the night of August 15th, '77 before his last appearance he told his hair dresser that "the only important thing was that he was on the stage, nothing else matters". Parker went bank rupt and needed to cash in on El doing a show by the next night knowing that he was not in the right condition. He'd fallen and hurt his ankle, could barely move, he was doped up on pills so much that a Dr Nick dunked his head in ice cold water to revive him the night of or before concert. When he was alive, they should have given this man thourough and proper treatment, cancel out any upcoming tour demands for health reasons. Overall health is what matters, not material fortune and fame. He loved the garden that his hairdresser lead him to, on one signage description read in the garden "everything else can wait..."

I wonder if Elvis ever realized how many snakes he was surrounded by. Seems like everyone he was surrounded by, damn near, have all unloaded everything private and sacred. Things that should never have been told. His whole crew. His manager. Now his doctor. Snakes. Everyone who has ran their mouths about Elvis' private life. Too bad. They had a chance to show they truly did love Elvis. They could have done that by respecting and loving Elvis' daughter, by honouring her Father.

It's the typical celebrity story: their "friends" are hangers-on: drug dealers, groupies, drug dealing doctors, thieves & so on. Elvis is not unique in this regard. Anyone pushed to that physical & psychological limit will end up addicted. Maybe the unnatural life of our 'superstars' is fundamentally unhealthy. Even totally drug-free stars like Karen Carpenter tend to self-destruct & die young. It's the stress & pressure combined with enablers who never say no.

The doctor also says the pills were for others on the group. This is extremely unethical. The autopsy showed Elvis had serious problems with all organs. Some I identified disease process beyond the addiction issues. Autoimmune. His mother also had a disease. Maybe caused by ddt. Her mother also was an invalid. And there is no shame in these problems. Elvis fans keep saying things like "he is still the best entertainer ever" or "I still love his music". Just because someone was a drug addict doesn't' make that person a horrible person. Or someone who doesn't deserve love. It makes him more of a normal person if you ask me. We don't know what goes on behind anyone's closed doors. Believe me this man has been dissected and judged since the day he first walked onstage. Drugs and overdosing is not a new concept. I think everyone is aware of them and what they can do. Elvis came from a different time and things weren't talked about and there was very little help. He kept it hidden because he was a prideful man and was actually against street drugs for recreational use and he never drank alcohol. Alot of people made alot of money off this man and the stories they told. Sadly his story requires a deep dive into his life and existing health problems, stress of being who he was, dozens of people relying on him for financial support and jobs. She was in a bathrobe doing her hair or makeup and a bullet came through the wall missing her by a few inches. She wrote about that in her book, and the story was verified by some of the entourage who were present at the time. For a man who had the power over people to lead a revolution if he had ever wanted to, he acted like a spoiled brat sometimes. People tried to confront Elvis about his problem. Linda Thompson begged and pleaded with him to stop. Red West sat him down and told him he thought he had a problem, and the next day Elvis came out of his bedroom and put a gun in his face. Almost everyone that tried to help him, aside from Billy Smith who was family, were slowly driven away until at the end he was surrounded by employees and a naive twenty year old trophy girlfriend who couldn't fathom the scope of his problem and had a family that wanted to use him for whatever they could get out of him. I do believe that Dr. Nick tried to control the problem by riding the line of giving Elvis just enough to keep from going to other doctors who would give him whatever he wanted, but he was fighting a losing battle. However money and the making of it became a huge factor for Elvis because he had very little left of it . Lord knows he was spending it as fast as he was earning it , and as it is well known now he was buying everything for everyone . We love Elvis for his generous heart however I think he could have managed his money a lot better .
